Nadine in Date Land (2005)
Atypical ROM-COM made funnier by Janeane Garofalo
This is your average Romantic - Comedy, better writing then most, and the direction is good enough.
What makes this film funnier and better then most romantic - comedies is the talents of the lead Janeane Garofalo. Janeane is one of those actresses and comics you wish you could see more on TV & Film (not in the role of political pundit), but as a leading actress.
Sadly there aren't any roles that will go her way because of superficial reasons, and Hollywood and the audience are missing out.
The film is about Nadine, a date specialist, who has no idea how to date herself. When a former crush, Adam, comes into town, Nadine, has to confront her demons and make Adam fall in love with her. Which is hard to do when you are a girl like Nadine.
If you liked The Truth About Cats & Dogs, and The Matchmaker, you will probably enjoy this film. It is a lot smarter then most romantic - comedies and it doesn't entirely play down to the audience.
The rest of the cast does a fine job. Brad Rowe, the crush, doesn't have much to do as the love interest, but he does try to make his character 3 - dimensional. Which most love interest in other films can never do.
Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
Way Better then the First
Which isn't saying much.
But still a good fun film. A lot of fighting. It jumps straight to the action. Not as gross as I wished, but still very good.
The acting was good enough. A lot of twists. And even the characters that you know are going to die, are fully fleshed out. (Which makes them even more tastier for the zombies.) The effects were cool, and Jill Valentine rocked. So did Milla, and a nice set up for a 3rd.
Surprisingly good overall. I would recommend it. A lot of good action, and laughs.
If this movie is PG 13, I don't know how.
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Surprisingly Good and Fun
Great film. Just as good as the original but for different reasons. You can never remake a film, so this re-imagining rocked. This isn't the 70s, something needed to change. After 30 yrs of zombie films some things had to change, and it worked. people aren't going to react the same to Zombies as they would in the 70s. If a some stumbling slow zombie came running towards you, I am sure a 12yo would know what to do. The film had to change some things to make a Zombie film frightening in modern day.
Also a loved the strong female heroine. The chick in the last one was so weak and annoying. This film benefited with the new idea of the kick butt chick, who does what she needs to do to survive. It also has intentional humor in it, something old horror fans will aprreciate. It was just a rocking good time. As far as scariness they did as much as they could with a R rating. Got away with some gross stuff too and a few good scares.
The characters, and acting was really amazing. The acting in the original was HORRIBLE. So I'd say the the two films are equally good for different reasons.
Also stay for the credits, there you will see the true ending. Whomever doesn't like the ending didn't stay for the credits.
Legion of the Dead (2001)
Really Bad
Quite possibly the worst direct to video horror film ever made. The first half is stupid, and the second half doesn't make any sense. Also I have never seen a film with so many unattractive people. Even Leprachaun had Jennifer Aniston. I would unwatch this film if I could.
