Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)
witty, touching, sweet, memorable--Standing O at the end at Sundance
From the get go I expected this movie to be my favorite at Sundance. It was. It was charming, witty, quirky and totally kicked ass chuck norris style. You get to know several characters and each has their moment in the sun, though Aubrey gets the bulk of the great lines. There could have been even more of her deadpan delivers. That would have suited me fine. The writer did do a good job of balancing the story lines and showed intimate aspects of each character. I'm not sure how believable the relationship was between the main characters, but that didn't bother me too much (i was probably just jealous i wasn't building my own time machine to pick up chicks). While the movie seems to survive mostly on simple ideas and witty remarks, I wanted to go on that adventure too. He lived in a world that was about as normal as you can get in hick-sticks, USA. Like most of us as we get a little older, adventure passes us and is replaced by juice boxes and diaper changes. This move appeals to all kinds and touches us in memorable ways. Even if you don't have a time machine, you can always add a little adventure in your life and you can appreciate it even more when you have a partner you can trust with your life--safety not guaranteed though. ;o)
Goats (2012)
Great acting
***SPOILER?*** While the plot was a bit meandering like a goat on a trek, it was for the most part entertaining. The acting was superb by the lead and Vera also had a solid performance. I look forward to seeing what graham does next. Not only was his performance solid, he seemed to be the most poised in answering questions after the movie. Nice job Graham. I felt like the movie went in a few too many directions that might better be handled in a series of shows on network television. I did end of liking the main characters except for goat man. His character, while interesting, didn't seem to have any real depth to it. All in all it was an entertaining movie with superb acting by graham that was thinned out a bit by a plot that got lost in the hills a bit.
Grabbers (2012)
Great movie!
I loved this movie! What a great surprise at Sundance. I didn't expect this to be in my top ten movies at the festival, and it made the top three. This is a funny horror movie that brings out the kid in me. There are a lot of laughs and then there are some laugh out loud parts. There are some hints of tremors in the dialogue and the wacky characters (as well as the plot of course), so if you liked that movie, you'll like this one. You know it's a good movie when some of the minor supporting characters have some of the best one liners. Of course, the male and female lead were excellent and created a strong base for the rest of the cast to do their thing. All in all the director did a superb job with this...the script is tight, it's well acted and flows smoothly from scene to scene. And hell, who doesn't love looking at the Irish countryside?
It Is Fine! Everything Is Fine. (2007)
it is easy to judge this movie and rightfully dismiss it
Looking past the surface of this movie, you can find tidbits of meaningful ideas that aren't developed or addressed. You learn very little about the main character and cannot understand what he is saying throughout the movie. Crispin Glover stated that the purpose was to show the reality of the main character since the main character cannot speak clearly. My thoughts are that you should be able to describe a scene as boring, you don't have to make the scene boring for the audience or reader. Viewing a man with cerebral palsy making love, murdering women and having a fetish will probably foster thought and conversation, though by itself it has little merit. I hope the images in this movie soon fade from my mind.
