Life & Beth (2022)
This is an HONEST 10
The first episode was a little off, admittedly. I almost gave up on it after one particular scene toward the end but I held on and I was not disappointed.
I do not dislike Amy Schumer and I always felt like people who didn't like her just don't know her type in real life. She talks to her audience like she'd talk to another girlfriend in private. We all do talk about this stuff but when you talk about it in public some people can't handle it. I know she's been accused of "stealing jokes" but honestly I don't care. She's an entertainer. She entertains me.
Anyway, I looked forward to this show and I wasn't disappointed. I was surprised by how well written it was. This is a great story. She's not a great actress but she does a good job here probably because the story is loosely based on her life.
That brings me to the real gem on this show: Michael Cera. Actually the show is chock full of treasures. The cast is outstanding. Violet Young is a wonderful young Beth. Michael Rappapport and Amy Schumer have this one scene, I won't spoil it, but man he is a great actor. He does such a great job portraying her father young and old. I really enjoy the flashback stories and every scene Michael Cera graces us with. He does such a great job portraying a real, authentic, honest-to-goodness actually autistic person I found myself in tears. This has not ever been done in US television. We have had autistic actors who didn't do such a good job portraying an autistic person. Kudos to the writers there! And really for whole story. I hope they come back for another season because I felt like this was an introduction to a great love story.
The Conners: Patriarchs and Goddesses (2022)
I am starting to look forward to this show
I actually love the new boyfriend and what a surprise to see Joe Walsh! His part was hilarious. Painful but hilarious.
To be fair I was never a big fan of this show back in the day. I didn't care for the lead actress at all but I loved Dan and the kids so the show is just right now. I am happy to see Laurie Metcalf has toned it down a notch or two. She is too much for a supporting role, I think.
Y: The Last Man (2021)
The acting is horrible
I cannot understand why DIANE LANE's acting in this show is so bad. She's ordinarily a good actor but she is so wooden. Her hand movements take me out of scenes. Maybe it's just how the scenes are shot or she's being directed to act this way but it's awful.
I liked the show in the beginning and I assumed the bad acting was because it was just the pilot. But we're several episodes in and it keeps getting worse. Everything is so obvious. I enjoyed the mystery in the beginning but now it's all about showing how badly women are running things and how conservatives are monsters. I'm an Obama loving progressive it's not that, it's just ridiculous how sinister they make them. I don't think that's a spoiler, it's been obvious from the pilot. Everything is stereotype. Everyone is a stereotype.
The Wonder Years (2021)
Can't understand bad ratings!
This pilot was wonderful. Rarely is a pilot this good. I loved the characters, the actors did a great job. It wasn't perfect, but that's how pilots are.
To be fair I was a huge fan of the original It was one of my favorite shows of that decade and I love the "twist" here with it featuring a black family.
I hope this show gets more appreciation because the story needs to be told in this manner. It's not a sitcom. It's not supposed to be funny but there is some solid humor mixed in with the pain that I could feel on their behalf during certain scenes.
Fantasy Island (2021)
Really growing on me
I think the first few episodes were really bad, so bad I didn't plan to watch again but I think the characters are really growing on me. It's a cheesy show as many sitcoms are. It's a sweet show much like the original Fantasy Island of my youth was. I like the modern take and really appreciate the diversity but the underlying message of fantasies not always being what they are cracked up to be is the same.
I really enjoyed the last two with the Melrose cast and the other story with the survivalist. They were both quite touching. I could do without Elena's weirdness though.
Nine Perfect Strangers (2021)
I don't want to read the book, so...
I just signed up for this account at this moment, after episode five, to say I LOVE THIS SHOW. I love every character and their stories and the flow of the show. I am so intrigued by the mystery of it all! I'm fine with Kidman. I don't care if it's not like the book. I have no interest in reading the book now. Maybe after, I don't know. I'm not much on fiction books but this show is wonderfully designed so far.
Oh and Manny Jacinto is delicious.
