Woke 'Silence of the Lambs' wannabe
17 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
With its woke, know-it-all main characters, this series perfectly encapsulates the zeitgeist of the last couple of years. Their willingness to 'help others' is clearly not so much out of empathy as it is to feed their narcissism.

Without the abundant inconsistencies and implausibilities, the plot would not be able to accommodate the overly woke, pretentious characters in effortly knitting their way to a resolution. However, it does so quite well.

On a side note.

I'm pretty sure it's inadvisable to use that type of gas oven in a closed, unventilated room. Defect or no defect. So that's one thing the got right...

Not great...
16 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie clearly shows that, once again, the white man tries to bring nuclear devastation to Japan. One might suspect that this is some sort of (justified) cultural indoctrination. Afterall the movie supposedly was meant for kids.

Spacemans "superpowers" seem to be proportional tonthe threat he meets. The bigger the threat, the stronger he is. At other times, not so much...

At first glance the movie has a 50s feel to it, even though it's from the mid 60s. The movie suffers from poor acting and ridiculously poor fight scenes. All in all the production quality isn't bad, but it's far from great.

The Future Of: Life After Death (2022)

Get a life - let people die
4 July 2022
This episode is about self indulgent people and their unwillingness to face the less enjoyable sides of life. It prophetizes a sad, stale future where people never move on but instead linger i a what-was fairy tale world.

The Motive (2020–2021)

Just over three episodes too long.
24 February 2022
Yet another (over)run of the mill "true" crime series from Netflix.

Padded with superfluous interviews with fringe characters, that add no depth (or sense) to the story.

This has the feel and professionalism of a middleschool extra credits project.

On the positive side; the lighting is good, which is more than you can say for many other Netflix productions...

A tale about Times Square, and something about a killer...
3 February 2022
Typical long winded, repetitive story with lots of side tracks. Too little focus on the crime scenes and the killer, which are after all the main part of the title.

Jonas Brothers Family Roast (2021 TV Special)

Overated
27 November 2021
This is rated 13+ on Netflix, so I guess they've totally missed their 7+ target.

This is not a real roast of the Jonas family. It's more like a home video of the family playing roast...

Cast away meets Borat
14 November 2021
Ok, that really isn't fair.

Those movies had intensity and a forward drive that this movie lacks.

But the robot does sound a lot like Borat...

This is a basic feel good road movie.

Shoddy work
23 October 2021
The story is so "constructed", and poorly so.

It's obvious that writer got stuck in moving the plot forward repeatedly. As a result, the characters behave very unnaturally and absurd.

I wish I had a mom like Louie

Casting Louie Anderson as the mother is pure genius! His portrayal adds an extra layer to the series.

Cringe, but not in the good way...
6 May 2020
Started out giving this 5* after the first 10 minutes. Just like when you start out with a new partner, you smile at their quirks and peculiarities. After a while, you just want to throw them under a bus...

Dredd (2012)

The future looks bleak and dull...
9 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
It's always hard with movies based on books. Reading the books, each person creates their own internal images of what they're reading. It's an impossible task for a director to recreate something that is identifiable by everyone. But wait... Dredd is based on a comic book, with pretty darn good drawings of everything. There's even another movie that got it right with the uniforms and the Lawmaster bikes. Was the director unaware of this when choosing how to portray Dredd's world? Just add water! The visuals are given and only needed a bit of polish. Guess they filmed it in the projects down the block? What could have been added was some true dilemma and depth. The director missed on so many count, this movie should have been judged!

Public Enemas
11 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The theme of this movie has been seen so many times before. The (almost heroic) criminal is chased by the dedicated (almost obsessive) law officer, eventually leading to the slaying of the criminal. Nothing of interest is added to the theme in this movie, actually this movie doesn't even make the bar set by previous movies in the genre.

It's long-winded, shallow, boring and seems to have been directed without any real sense of direction. It looks as if the camera crew got progressively more drunk/stoned - to such an extent that they obviously trashed the camera and had to buy a new one at Wal-Mart (as mentioned in another review). Seemingly the the director had a spell of schizophrenia, not being able to decide whether to make a dogme movie or not.

As my summary suggests, I find Public Enemies as entertaining as having an enema in public.

The Spirit (2008)

Pro & Contra
29 May 2009
I don't recall reading (or leafing through) the Spirit comics, but left the theater with a feeling that they had been skillfullly and respectfully transposed to the big screen (or DVD in my case). While this movie is visually very impressive and right in line with Sin City, the same cannot be said for the plot nor the acting. The plot is mediocre and linear - no surprises, and hardly any twist and turns. The acting was nonmemorable, or perhaps it's the characters depicted that were uninteresting. Actually, I don't think it cold have been done any better. Perhaps, it just shouldn't have been - at least not that long - one season with ½ hour a week would have squeezed the best out of it.

Shocko!
7 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I was shocked at what this movie revealed. (Although I feel the softer Moore is losing his edge.)

I'm pretty indifferent to the fact that Americans (with or without healthcare) are getting screwed. The US claims to be the world's greatest democracy, so I guess the Americans are getting what they asked for?!?!

What really shocked me was that the France is light years ahead of Denmark.

In Denmark we're constantly pommeled with claims that we have the world's greatest health service, and social services in general. (This is probably symptomatic of a minute country's inferiority complexes...) Lately these services have greatly eroded, making us look like a socially underdeveloped country (like the US).

Run of the mill...
14 August 2005
On the brighter side, this movie contains many of the little odds and ends you would expect having read the book or having listened to the radio show - so far so good. Actually that's part of the problem, it's only what you would expect. No surprises, no exceptional experience. A lot of water (read:films) has passed under the bridge (read:across the screen) since the world first met Douglas Admas' creation - probably a lot "inspired" by Douglas Adams. If you haven't seen Brazil, The Young Ones, Fifth Element etc. etc., just go for it. If you have, poor acting and run of the mill effect make for a dull experience. (You fall asleep faster than you would with the book though... :-) ) Even though I went in with an open mind I was not impressed, and hardly entertained. This just is not a brilliant film!

Visual treat
13 September 2004
While this movie is a visual treat, some of the characters don't quite cut it...

A lot of time and energy has obviously been put (successfully) into pampering the visual experience in this movie. The plot is suitably surreal to match the visual setting.

The multilayered story also helps to create an engaging atmosphere.

However, the acting leaves a bit to be desired. Some of the characters are clearly actors trying to act surreal, not surreal characters.

I will see this movie again, not for the acting or the story, but for the visual treat.

Well, isn't that special...
14 November 2003
Not! This video isn't here to pump you up!

If this is the best Dana Carvey did on Saturday Night Live, I am no longer a Dana Carvey fan! I have obviously imagined several hilarious sketches, that are far better than what is on this video.

This is a broad presentation of Dana Carvey's characters on SNL - not a select collection the best!

How in the world could they ever think of cutting the most of "Fantasy Dinner Date with Hans & Franz" out? This has obviously been edited with someone with no knowledge of Dana Carvey's work and absolutely no sense of humor!

Flashbacks
8 September 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Jerry writes a best-seller about his experiences with Tom. This sets the scene for flashbacks to three cartoons: The Little Orphan, Cat Fishin' and Kitty Foiled.

***Spoiler*** Jerry is of course upset (being made the laughing stock) and let's Jerry have it. However, Jerry has a card up his sleeve. He's received a check for the book - half of which goes to Jerry.

Cartooning 101: F-
7 September 2003
Gene Deitch does it again! Well, actually he doesn't (as usual).

Deitch and his team must have gotten straight F's at cartoon school. Their cartoons have only the slightest red line. Worst of all cause and effect are jumbled up, badly.

Deitch and his team should have been expelled!

Politically correct
25 August 2003
As a family cartoon - this flops! This is quite the political cartoon though. The political message is quite correct and still very relevant. The message on mass production and consumption is still relevant, almost 50 years after this cartoon was made.

Cats plays with mouse...
16 August 2003
Does Polanski take on the role of the cat, leaving the audience to be the mouse? He leaves us guessing who the characters really are, and what their motives may be. Does he want to lead us down paths of frustration, constantly suspect a mix-up, leading to the lead characters demise.

The reckless and haphazard manner of handling precious, essential items seems intentional.

Is it all obvious or all too obvious? Either way, this movie will leave you thinking.

One of Deitch's best...
9 August 2003
...which doesn't say much! Two dimensional style and shallow pranks are Deitch's trademark. This Tom & Jerry cartoon is no exception.

On the (somewhat) bright side, the theme for this cartoon is somewhat original. Some new ideas are tried out. However, they are unable to pull in this second rate cartoon.

Sure is sorry...
23 July 2003
The title says it all - this is a sorry cartoon. Story and animation match each other, they're equally bad.

The style of the 1960's cartoons does not please me in general. However this is one of the worst.
