Criminal Minds: 'Til Death Do Us Part (2015)
How to Lose Viewers & Alienate People
The only reason this episode gets any stars at all is because the cops (&/or feds) do not murder the UnSub.
This episode manages to uphold Ye Olde Beauty Standards in the very worst of ways, while also maligning an incredibly common disorder - PCOS. Coupled with the known flawed theories that mental illness = criminality, the whole thing just reeks of English Patriarchal Rubbish.
It's basically a teenage drunken punchline:
"What if there was a fat girl who got SO JEALOUS she killed people for flirting with her boyfriend?"
"Dude, WHAT boyfriend?"
T. T
Not a single effort was made to lift people up, to punch up, or to offset the kind of damage these provably false situations inflict.
Criminal Minds: Mr. Scratch (2015)
Beautifully Messed Up
Matthew Gray Gubler makes some wonderfully weird art, & this episode is one of his masterpieces.
The episode opens with a man who insists he is innocent of any wrongdoing. Hotch interviews him, with as much compassion as his efficient manner allows. We learn that this man was asked to make sure there wasn't anyone in the house by his wife. While doing that, the man smelled burning sage.
After that, things got SUPER weird.
There's some of Matthew Gray Gubler's art in this episode, as well as some heart-stopping moments that brought a tear to my eye.
Please be advised, there is talk of (debunked) "Recovered Memory" therapy used with small children, as well as coerced self-checkout.
