Magnum P.I. (2018–2024)
8/10
Reboot of reboot
2 May 2023
PC aside, was the tasteful but noticeable boob job on Perdita Weeks her own initiative or something suggested by the new production on NBC?

Very glad it was picked up by NBC after looking forward to it every Friday night on CBS. Not the deepest show but fun to watch.

I have come not to expect or demand accuracy with representation to military personnel or dress on network tv or even movies, but the S5E2 gaff referring to the Purple Heart as the highest award a veteran can get is so egregious that you have to question why they haven't bothered to have a military advisor on staff. The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest award and there are probably another dozen medals that rank above the Purple Heart for displaying on the uniform. Appreciate they continued the tie to the Navy from the original show but please do a little bit extra work and get things right.

Still a good watch, look forward to each episode.

Historical Re-Write and glaring inaccuracies
28 December 2020
I'll continue to watch it all the way through the last couple of episodes. I've hoped it would become a better historical drama than soap drama, but not yet. Some of it is based on historical fact, such as actually launching a man into space, a lot is just made up. You wonder if it's not just a reflection of the current climate of bashing anything that has been accomplished in the country.

I'm not overly sensitive to representations of military personnel, but the uniform appearance of the female nurse lieutenant is glaringly wrong. Her rank and branch insignias are on the wrong lapels, that is her lieutenant bar belongs on her right collar not her left collar as she always wears it, and the medical service insignia should be on her left collar. Further, both are oriented vertically and they both should be horizontal, parallel to the bottom of the collar and one inch above.

It would not have taken much research at all to get this right, but this is another example of caring little for accuracy in this soap drama.

Disappointing all around.

Worth watching once or twice
10 October 2020
Would love to see a "Prequel", reprising Margo Martindale and bringing to life the mother of the sisters to see how the town and the brothel business evolved.

There is some intentional twisting and obfuscation which seems to have been confused with clever story development.

in credits the actors listed second and third in order of appearance are not actually seen as second and third, but must be the ones traveling in a distant car. They are important characters in the development of the story but don't actually make much of an appearance. Their second scene is in which the man tackles the girl while both are running across a snow field. They aren't identified but if you go back through the movie or watch it a second time you fill in the details if you are that curious. It takes too much work and effort for the casual viewer.

The ending also leaves in the air some undefined events and opens the gate for a sequel, which I wouldn't mind seeing, although as mentioned would like to see a prequel so as to be able to bring back Margo Martindale.

The final production is ambiguous rather than clever, enough so to make the whole viewing experience annoying. But I'd like to see another episode, either prequel or sequel.

The Moodys (2019–2021)
10/10
11 on a scale of 10
5 January 2020
Funny, charming and warm, we can hope they are already in the works for a follow on mini series next Christmas. Great family dynamic not just with the parents but great closeness between the three adult children. Highly recommended. It inspired me to get my tree out and lit up. All the supporting cast and characters are well written and performed, from the uncle who manages the parts department at Southside Toyota, to cousin Marco and his girlfriend, and the high school wrestling coach, last seen walking dejectedly away from the Moody's house alternately curling Christmas-wrapped dumbells lol. Please a second season next December, really puts you in the mood for a family Christmas.

Abby's (2019)
3/10
Almost painful to watch
12 April 2019
I've learned through too much tv watching that sometimes new shows take a few episodes to find their mix and chemistry.

But Abby's still continues to come across as forced and embarrassingly awkward with its dialogue. Just as embarrassing is I still recorded and watched through three episodes.

It just is not funny, and even introduced the Hollywood mandatory gay bi-sexual theme required of at least one character in each show now.

Too bad for Neil Flynn after eight or nine great years on The Middle, I guess everyone is associated with a bust in their career. It probably sounded like it had a chance with Josh Malmuth associated with the show, but this is just bad.

I'll watch most anything but life's too short to waste 22 minutes on this show's fourth episode.

Secret Agent: The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove (1965)
Season 1, Episode 18
8/10
"Q" Makes Appearance in Danger Man
22 November 2018
One of my favorite shows as a youngster, I found "Danger Man" on Charge TV accidentally and immediately recognized the musical score, and intro and closing credits ("High Wire", officially named), although it had been 50 years since I'd last seen the show in the U.S. as "Secret Agent". In this episode "The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove", we see the appearance of Desmond Llewelyn, or "Q", of logistics and product development in the James Bond movies. He appears recurringly as the doorman to the casino, and later as one of the emergency responders to Mr. Drake's car accident when Drake finally comes to. He had only appeared in one or two of the James Bond movies by that time, "Q" being somewhat disdainful of the playful nature with which 007 treats his inventions, but otherwise quite a list of credits in English TV. His face under the doorman's top hat and long overcoat is quite unmistakable.

This episode certainly has elements that remind one of the future "The Prisoner" short series. This isn't quite unique, in the episode "Don't Nail Him Yet", Mr. Drake tries to get in the head of the culprit and wear him down as he does to one or more of the many "Number Two" characters in "The Prisoner".

There is sometimes speculation that the theme song "Secret Agent Man" was written with the follow on series "The Prisoner" in mind. The sentence in the chorus, "They've given you a number, and taken away your name", would seem to lead one in that direction. However the songwriters P.F. Sloan / Steve Barri composed a quick lead in when several studios were approached by CBS TV, and this short version with the famous guitar riff was expanded into the full length song "Secret Agent Man". It became the series theme song in the United States only, as by that time the series Danger Man in England had already run its course. At the time several James Bond movies had been released and "spy" themed TV shows were quite the rage in the United States and in England by ITC, and the phrase "giving you a number" is thought to refer to Agents being assigned numbers to hide identity, such as 007. There isn't any evidence or statements by the late Mr Sloan that the future "The Prisoner" had even been raised at the time they wrote the intro for "Secret Agent".

Zero Hour! (1957)
A classic, especially for fans of Airplane!
6 March 2010
In 2010 Zero Hour! is as funny as Airplane!, only it wasn't meant to be at the time. Kudos to TCM for showing it immediately following Airplane. Great to see Dana Andrews when young, and planes had cockpits you could just walk into. If you're a fan of Airplane, or post-war movies, this is a must see.

i hadn't seen it in decades before TCM showed them back to back last night, great job TCM.

What, the review has to be 10 lines long? Well, just picture during this black and white movie while Joey is in the cockpit the Captain saying, "Jimmy, did you ever see a grown man naked?"

This was enjoyable to watch just being a fan of 50s movies, double so being a longtime fan of Airplane!

Friday Night Lights (2006–2011)
10/10
One of the few shows I schedule time to watch.
12 January 2007
Friday Night Lights is excellent. The development of characters is done in a manner not only better than most TV shows but better than most movies. The pressures on young QB1 Matt and Coach Taylor, like all the characters, are revealed carefully by showing some of their day to day situations over time, not quickly going over the top and slapping you in the face as so often done on TV and movies. The audience is smart and been there, we get it, don't insult us.

For those who may have avoided this show for fear it was all about football, take another look, I'm sure you'll like it. There is a rich and broad cast in this show most of whom are not involved directly with the football team, and in fact the football players themselves are mostly shown outside the narrow scope of the football team. But behind everything that goes on in the town there is always the shadow and impact that the Dillon Panthers have on the town, for after all, this is small town Texas.

I look forward to this show every week and you can probably catch up by watching episodes on line.
