Booksmart (2019)
Haven't Enjoyed A Movie This Much in Quite Awhile!
Sometimes you just want to enjoy a movie that makes you laugh as it makes you think. This is that movie. The fact that that rumors in high school hurt, nerds and jocks can have common interests and keeping your head in the books to the detriment of the high school social experience is a negative are all brought up here. I found the movie very poignant and yet hilarious. So many classic moments like the parents naming all of the appetizers for graduation. The rich cute boy with the lack of taste and the false reputation for sleeping with prostitute then who had almost no one show up to his graduation party tore up my heart until he got his redemption at the graduation ceremony. So many great moments. Great music too. I am a conservative republican and have no issue with the modern day relationship issues presented. Also the music is great! My husband and I watched this and then he asked if we could watch it again - he loved it so much.
The Dirt (2019)
Now THAT'S Entertainment!
Sometimes, you just don't want to watch a movie like Roma. You just want to be entertained. This movie did that for me. A great rollercoaster ride of debauchery and ultimate repentance with superb casting (Ramsey Bolton as Mick Mars! Machine Gun Kelly channels Tommy Lee!). The humor keeps it from getting too dark and I actually enjoyed the music, even though I've never owned any Crue music. I was born the same month and year as Tommy Lee, so I remember those years before AIDS and political correctness brought the party to screeching halt. Just sit back and enjoy the ride!
Titans (2018)
Was Never a DC Fan Until Now - Great Show!
I have to admit that the only reason I decided to watch this show and subscribe to the DC Channel was that my daughter used to date one of the actors who is a main character. I have always had a preference for Marvel. The previews looked horrible, so I prepared myself to be disappointed. Wow - I was so wrong. The backstories are so compelling that they draw you in so much that you want to see more. I wanted to hate Starfire because she seemed all wrong casting wise versus the comics, but dang, she is my favorite totally badass character in the series so far!
The creepy family was the bomb. Two Robins - What an interesting scenario. The series continues to interest me so much, that I view it on Friday evening, which is the first night it is available. The production values are on a movie level, with beautiful photography and believable cgi. It is like seeing a half movie every week, which reminds me of Game of Thrones in that aspect. I can't wait to see where this series goes. I was so hoping to hate this so I could cancel my subscription, but now I just can't. It's too good to miss.
We Are Totality (2017)
Building the Excitement for the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse
This documentary does a good job of explaining why you should travel into the path of totality to see the eclipse. It was nice to see St. Joseph, where I am traveling for the eclipse. Shows downtown Kansas City and the line where totality begins, but never really specifies where it is. Just shows a building and doesn't give the location or the name of the building. The experiences of several eclipse chasers are highlighted as well as the preparation of a select few cities along the path of totality. The price gouging for lodging is pointed out ( just insane!) along with the possibility of cell service interruption. A good documentary for building the excitement for the eclipse.
Paul Williams: Still Alive (2011)
Glad Paul Wlliams is Still Alive and Happier Than Ever!
As many others my age, I just assumed that Paul Williams had passed away since he was no longer in the public eye. He was everywhere in the 70's. A truly talented songwriter, with a self aware wit, he was an excellent talk show guest. Then he disappeared.
Netflix showed this documentary as a recommendation after I watch the Glen Campbell documentary and I actually think I enjoyed this documentary more.
At first, it was hard to watch as the director came off as stalker-ish and often seemed disinterested when Williams was sharing more poignant aspects of his upbringing, but as the documentary progressed, Wllliams story of addiction, recovery and the discovery of true happiness shone through.
I highly recommend this to anyone who has fond memories of Paul Williams in his hey day. This documentary really shows an interesting perspective on celebrity and what truly brings happiness.
Jayhawkers (2014)
Artfully done movie with great acting, directing and soundtrack. Rock chalk!
Finally found this movie On Demand (Vimeo) and purchased it. I'm glad I did. Kip Niven's portrait of Phog Allen is heartbreaking (why isn't he on screen much anymore.) I had no idea the animosity between Allen and his successor Dick Harp. This movie really made me suspect that if Allen had been allowed to stay on as the KU coach, the Jayhawks would have won the national title with Chamberlain. The Jazz soundtrack drives the movie (reminds me of Birdman) and the Black and White photography helps set the mood as well. It's also nice to see a non-Empire performance from local Kansas Citian Trai Byers. The civil rights struggles of blacks in the 1950's is well depicted. Having lived and gone to school in Lawrence, Kansas it's hard to imagine that at one time in that city, blacks had to watch movies in the balcony and eat restaurant meals in the kitchen. I am going to have to try and find more of Kevin Willmott's work - especially CSA - The Confederate States of America. The only negative is my experience with Vimeo on my roku. The video drops out 3/4 of the way through the movie. I would suggest ordering the DVD from the Jayhawkers website as a better viewing option. I highly recommend this movie to everyone, not just Jayhawk or Chamberlain fans.
Disconnect (2012)
This Movie Just Riveted me to my seat! Better than Crash!
I was looking for a diversion and a reason to keep my HBO Now account, now that GOT has ended and I ran across this movie. I read some reviews before I watched it and expected a movie worth my while, but I have to say that I was riveted to my seat throughout the entire movie and found it entertaining, thoughtful, on point, well acted, well directed, properly paced and thought provoking. The ending slow motion sequence was a work of art. I highly recommend a viewing. If you have HBO and haven't seen this movie, then you need to. You won't have to wrap your mind around it to the point of frustration like the current season of True Detective. This movie reminds me of Crash, but I like this movie more. This movie is more relevant given that I have a teenage daughter and I myself spend many hours online. I just can't believe it did so poorly at the box office. Movies like this are one of the only reasons I keep my HBO Now subscription, because there have been so many similar gems that I have discovered that I would never even considered watching on Pay Per View.
