True Detective: Night Country: Part 6 (2024)
Woo woo
This entire series was well-written, directed, and acted but this episode was just the worst. Convoluted story full of plot holes and unanswered questions. If we're getting to the end of a series people have invested time and interest in and THEN you tell them it's myth or story to explain the lack of resolution that is beyond lazy and nothing like all the previous seasons have been. I think I was angriest over how the episode was padded out with instances that made one THINK it would be a reveal, only to be disappointed. Will I watch another season? Probably, but I may let it rest for sometime before jumping in. I also assume they were addressing lots of political issues and lost the narrative but that's my opinion.
Adrian Street Story: You May Be Pretty, But I Am Beautiful (2019)
Local Alabama man from Wales does good;)
This was fun for me remembering Adrian's pro wrestling appearance at my small Alabama high school. It's a good, probably well sensationalized, documentary of a somewhat successful English wrestler that became a very successful flamboyant American pro wrestler. Wrote and recorded his own entrance music and designed and made his ringwear with the help of Miss Linda. Recommended.
Soul (2020)
weird convoluted story
I just didn't get this at all. Bizarre story. Great animation and voice acting as usual but I didn't enjoy it as a holiday movie coming out on Christmas Day or really any sort of good story period. Watch Coco again.
The Booker (2011)
hidden gem
I don't know why no smarks have watched and reviewed this but I really liked it. Fun glimpse into the passionate psychology of independent wrestling. These guys are the real heroes of pro wrestling, they'll never make the big leagues and love it with all their heart anyway. I highly recommend it.
To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)
Purely fantastic
I don't think I can be critical of this movie, it's just pure 80s crime gold. Wonderful super loud synth track and wonderful acting. 80s noir? Maybe. Watch it.
UglyDolls (2019)
Completely missable
I really tried to finish this because my 8 year old wanted to watch it but it was absolutely terrible. Animation was the only redeeming point because the music and story were completely boring and humorless. The best kids movies always have some humor for the parents but they didn't bother. Do not recommend to anyone.
Papa wa warumono chanpion (2018)
Great movie
And by great I don't mean acting or anything but it's clear what you're getting from the start-an explanation of pro wrestling's system of heels and faces that's clear for anyone to understand. The acting is pretty good, directing and music are wonderful and this was a great vehicle for New Japan Pro Wrestling to get their stars over in a more personal way. More sentimental and overall better than anything WWE has put out in movies involving wrestlers. Highly recommended:)
Avengement (2019)
Scott Adkins-great at this style
This guy is so physical and this is a great movie. It looks fantastic and the acting is believable. Adkins-the new hero of the revenge movie. Plus, British tough guys are just tougher:)
The Highwaymen (2019)
excellent
This was great for me and Costner and Harrelson were perfect for it. A wonderful period movie and true to life story. Loved it and highly recommended!
Lucy (2014)
Kinda crappy...
I've liked lots of Luc Besson stuff but I just found this kind of silly. Supposedly he's working on a part II but I can't imagine where they could go from here. All the acting is good as expected but the whole premise of the story-dumb-only given gravitas by the presence of Morgan Freeman.
Polar (2019)
A few missteps but you know what? It was still good:)
OK the torture scene was too long and the bad guy was out of his depth and not believable, but the directing and acting were pretty good. I liked it and would be interested in a sequel. I went in excited to see Mads Mikkelsen in something like this and I wasn't disappointed.
Bodyguard (2018)
great potential unfulfilled
This was wonderful in the beginning but then got really convoluted and ultimately ruined by the final episode. Good acting throughout but I really can't recommend:(
Tales of Masked Men (2012)
I love pro wrestling
And this little gem didn't change my mind. I was sent a screener from CA by the director and when I offered to send it back he told me to keep it. It really is great and well researched by passionate people that have written books about it, check Amazon for the names of some of the interviewees. Lucha libre is one of the most outlandishly fantastic pro wrestling styles but even if you're not a pro wrestling fan this is a very well done labor of love. Watch it and be mesmerized for a little while:)
John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)
Best of its type
This was really amazing with completely new and particularly venomous bad guys and lots to build on for a third movie. Beautiful scenes of NYC with a great synth soundtrack and all the stuff I loved about the first one turned up to 11. Even an homage to Enter the Dragon and knowing references to The Matrix. I can't recommend it highly enough:)
