Battlestar Galactica: Black Market (2006)
Surprisingly Bad
This feels like it was written by a highschooler who drastically overestimates how "cool" their dialogue sounds and how "mysterious" their plot is.
This episode is as generic and empty as TV gets, which would normally land it at a 5/10 if it didn't get in the way of an otherwise excellent show. Because of this episode, an interesting character is now gone, Apollo suddenly has weird out of character plot strands attached to him, and generally characters talk like they are parodies of themselves.
It's honestly a stain on the show.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Generic, Pretentious, but Above Average
TLDR: worth watching just for Hamish Linklater's priest character, the rest is generic pretentious emptiness with some jumpscares in-between.
1) Horror:
Without exaggerating, nearly every single "horror" scene is a jumpscare paired with a loud noise that only the audience can hear. Honestly, I don't understand how this was made by the same person who made Haunting of Hill House.
2) One dimensional characters:
Every single character besides the priest is empty. The "good guys" have absolutely no flaws and only perform perfectly moral actions. The "baddie" is 100% evil with zero depth, but at least she's acted very well. The priest, however, is one of Flannagan's best characters, and is honestly the only reason this show isn't a 3/10 for me.
3) Monologues:
Nothing wrong with monologues, as Shakespeare proved to everyone in highschool. Flanagan's monologues, however, are empty fluff that anyone over the age of 13 has likely already explored in their own head. They're delivered in obtusely flowery language with manipulative music though, so they must be deep. Every time a character starts spewing one, its like their personality disintegrates and Flanagan takes over, patting himself on the back for being so so deep and thoughtful. Its a clear example of a talented director crawling into his own bum for warmth and self indulgence. You won't get Mr. Dudley's monologue from Hillhouse in this show unfortunately, just empty fluff.
