After the Flood (2024)
Dreadful. Flooded with mediocrity
This is proof that reputation doesn't guarantee quality. From the makers of Happy Valley you'd quite rightly expect a drama full of quality acting allied to a credible and engaging script. Well this drama from ITV, usually renowned for making good dramas, is nothing short of dreadful. The acting is stilted and very stereotypical of modern day PC television, the direction is well there isn't any and the plot line is devoid of any credibility. As usual there's a renegade trainee copper who runs rings around the legal niceties than control the police force without being sacked. Avoid this like you would floodwater.
Justified: City Primeval (2023)
Ok as a stand alone......
........ but not a patch on the original. Lacks the punch and raw intensity that became associated with Raylan Givens and his complete disregard for the law. He's become respectable and it just doesn't suit the character. Also the background is very clinical and not the earthiness of Kentucky. It's a shame as the original was arguably one of the best crime dramas on tv since The Wire and set a standard that just hasn't been transferred to this. Nevertheless it's a lot better than many others and viewed on that basis is good but I can't help comparing it to the original hence my lower rating. On its own it's 7/10.
Pretty Hard Cases (2021)
Pretty hard on your IQ
Another formulaic cop buddy series. Two female cops both ethnically and socially diverse meet during a drug bust and immediately don't get on. Lo and behold they're soon the best of mates taking down drug cartels. Half an hour was enough for me.
Landscapers (2021)
Not quite what I expected.
Tbh I wasn't expecting a surrealistic take on a horrible crime. Having said that it was done in a way that kept my attention for all the wrong reasons. Entertaining nonetheless for all its bizarre approach.
Wander (2020)
A complete mystery.
I could watch this several hundred times and still not have a clue as what it's about. It just jumps back and forth with very little coherent continuity.
Blue Thunder (1983)
A very underrated action movie
I first saw this when it was released on the big screen in 1983 and it ticked all the boxes for me att. Watching it almost 40 years later it hasn't really dated, in fact has matured with age. Proper stunts, no CGI and some very good acting from Roy Schneider and Warren Oates. I dread to think how much a modern remake would lose everything this movie has. Authentic action with a well thought out script. Hope to be around in another 40 years. It'll be even better by then.
Without Remorse (2021)
A complete inaction movie
Dreadful script, poor direction and although it promised so much with the cast it delivered so little. Was Tom Clancy involved? I somehow doubt it going by the end result.
