The OA (2016)
Not usually a fan of fantasy but this one had me hooked
Firstly, I only found this series in 2023. No idea how that was possible, but what a find it was. The idea Netflix cancelled this is beyond the pale, and I can only assume some nasty COVID nonsense played a role.
I'm not a fan of fantasy or sci-fi typically, but this series did such a good job of combining a psychological thriller to make a brilliant blend and craft a great (if not bonkers!) series. I'm fascinated to know where this story ends and it's a crime against humanity that we may never know. The acting is very good, and the pivot of story in series 2 really takes you by surprise. Long live OA!
The Witcher (2019)
How to nose dive...fast
As most people have said, season 1 was very good. The moment they turned Henry into an emotional babysitter, they began to spiral into an uncontrollable pile of boring waffle. Oh, and you get the usual signatures of diversity and inclusion that consign it to rubbish pile.
I'd reclassify this series as a slightly up market shadow and bone, with surprisingly worse acting. The writing is weak, the dialogue dull, and the story line seemingly impossible to follow, probably because it doesn't know where it's going.
I was curious why Henry decided to leave, and it doesn't take long to figure out in series 3. He did well to stick with it to the end.
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
Hard to believe it's what they intended
This programme starts off well, quite an intriguing story line with some good acting and a bit of suspense. However, I feel like they ran out of ideas and rapidly lost the plot (literally) toward the end. It goes from a well scripted thriller, to a weird fantasy where it feels as if they're making it up on the spot. Probably a good watch for the simple minded.
StartUp (2016)
Bizarrely underrated
I stumbled across this show by accident and I'm struggling to understand why. There is some seriously good acting in this series, with a genuinely gripping storyline. It's very well cut together and deserves far more credit than it seems to have picked up. When you look at shows that scoop all the awards, and compare them to this, it's a complete mystery. Very much enjoyed and highly recommended.
Unsolved Mysteries (2020)
UFO episode?
Is this meant to be part of a different series? Comedy perhaps? Hardly an unsolved mystery. A very stereotypical American take on UFO's appearing in small towns. Ticked just about every cliché in the book. Particularly enjoyed the part where the chap talks about getting sucked up by a beam!
Normal People (2020)
Nauseating waffle, but some good acting
Good in parts, but found the whole thing very hard work. It will always do well with critics as it's all emotions and acting, but good grief, I had to crawl over the line to finish it. Main credit goes to Paul Mescal who was very good.
