Oppenheimer (I) (2023)
10/10
Masterpiece of pure filmmaking
23 August 2023
The most perfect example of "show, don't tell" in a movie that is basically dialogue. But the way it shows the main characters, the amazing camera work, editing, sound design, music...it all fits perfectly to put us in the moment that the characters are living.

On top of that , the absolute dominion over the timeline, jumping back and forth in time, demonstrates the way Nolan is the master of cinematic narrative.

Fortunately I watched it on an IMAX screen and I can tell it's exactly the way was meant to be seen.

It might be underwhelming if you're expecting big "fireworks", but the emotional roller coaster of each moment of the film totally makes up for the lack of explosions. And even "the big one" is shot in a way that is much more powerful than any regular "boom".

Overall it's an incredible biopic, political thriller and human drama as it can be.

Every film fan should watch this movie at least once in the biggest screen with the best sound available.

A true modern masterpiece.

Citadel (2023– )
3/10
Near the "so bad is good" territory but not even that
5 May 2023
What a "Cliche-palooza"! Everything sounds and looks generic at best. It's like an airport spy novel.

Not even the action or Stanley Tucci's acting is redeeming this so far (I stopped half way episode 3).

The CGI is also poor, the "James Bond Light" that was Mason Kane is turned into "Jason Bourne Light" with a convenient anmesia and even though Priyanka is a beautiful eye candy, her character is so monotone it puts you to sleep.

I love spy stories even when they're not very good, but with the talent behind Citadel I would've hoped for a better outcome.

If somehow there's some hype around the finale I'll might come back to catch up. But for now, I'd rather have my memories of this series erased, please.

El fin del Amor (2022– )
6/10
It falls short, but it's okay and surprisingly good at times

Being a Millennial man, there might be quite a few things that I got "lost in translation". But overall the series feels aimless, just a collection of situations and characters in an over-romantized Buenos Aires, that leaves you as clueless as you entered that world. Maybe there's a 2nd season already in the works but as a whole show it feels incomplete.

The actors and directors make it an enjoyable show, but completely forgettable. Lali is very good as the lead (and also a very good narrator, which is not very easy feat in Spanish) , Veronica Llinas (Tam's mother) is always a guaranteed good performance, the two "outsider" characters (the orthodox Jewish and the Bartender) are remarkable, and the rest is a little mixed. Especially the male characters, a little too stereotypical and shallow.

The pace of the story is ok, it could have been a couple of episodes shorter but the ending felt a little rushed. Maybe the fact that Lali is also a Pop Star made the production more difficult because of her schedule.

It's enjoyable, probably more so for young women in their 20s and 30s , and overall it's a good example of the quality of production that can be achieved in Latin America, Argentina in this particular case.

How I Met Your Father: Pilot (2022)
Season 1, Episode 1
7/10
Trying to find that magic...but it has a lot of work to do
14 February 2022
Somehow the dialogue, pace and characters of this pilot seem more outdated than the original gang so many years ago.

The style is pretty much the same but it's now very noticeable how much Bob Saget brought to the story (rip Mr Tanner).

I gotta admit that some of the almost verbatim conversations and the "cameo" in the end brought me on the nostalgia hype.

I wanted to write this review after just one episode because that original pilot hook me up from the very beginning, and this one...it's got an uphill battle ahead.

I love Hillary Duff (fan of hers on "Younger") and believe or not I truly loved Francia Raisa in The secret life or the American Teenager.

It's got a little bit of potential, but like I said at the start, it feels like an older and much generic show than the og HIMYM.

Let's see what's next, I'm still hoping to take "The Leap"
