Bonanza: The Avenger (1960)
Someone outacts everyone
Everything he says, how he says it, what he does, how he does it - everything is cast in one piece and brought into an exact form. Even if he doesn't say or do anything, an aura surrounds him from the very first moment he enters the scene, which it's difficult for viewers to resist.
A brilliant performance by Vic Morrow, backed by a confident direction, a very good script with the appropiate score make this episode the most mature of the whole series.
The only supposed downer is the open ending and that the story of Vic Morrow's character was never told to the end. Although dramaturgically that wasn't a mistake and was appropriate to the plot, perhaps even necessary.
Old Henry (2021)
A "worrying good" performance by Tim Blake Nelson and a special moment
Alongside "Young Guns" this is the best "Billy The Kid" movie made so far. There is this special moment in the movie when the old farmer Henry is revealed as Billy the Kid which is truely magical directed and definitely one of my top 10 western movie moments ever (and i have propably watched around 95% of the Spaghetti Western as well as US Western). Tim Blake Nelson completly immerses himself in his role as western legend in the end.
The film demands a lot of patience from the viewer, maybe 2/3 of the time. And yet you have always the feeling it will be worth it at the end. Similar to a throw from your own half in the very last second of a basketball game, the film has the same arc of suspense as during the flight time of the throw. Based on the flight curve you can feel this could be it ... and it was indeed the winning shot!
