"Freaks and cultists in Russia"
3 December 2008
Sorry but as a Russian I can't perceive this seriously. With all my respect to Herzog it's NOT a true depiction of Russian faith and superstitions but rather a Borat-like comedy disguised as a highly objective and free from personal opinions documentary report.

If this movie has made you think that people like notorious exorcist Wisard Vasilyev, self-declared messiah Vissarion etc. are of any importance for the general Russian public then, well, you ought to consider imaginary movie called e.g. "Faith and superstitions in US" shot with a camera which thoughtfully dwells on ceremonies by Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Charles Manson.

Extremely tendentious and pretentious "Bells from Deep" can't be recommended to anybody except Russians: in their eyes it definitely deserves 10/10 for campiness (and BTW poses a question about relevance of other Herzog's ethnographic movies).

Bluebeard (1944)
9/10
Mister Puppeteer
6 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I believe we're frustrated with loud and obtrusive background music too much because of getting accustomed to modern soundtrack design standards. The unusual sound should rather remind us about good old times when much less was taken for granted by the audience and all aspects of the film-making were still so fresh and free for exploration and experiments!

Besides, if you prefer classical music to detective stories you're free to perceive the "Blue Beard" as some kind of video-clip noire:)

The plot relates not only to the "Blue Beard" fairy tale but to "The Beauty and the Beast" as well. Though there is no happy ending because the Beauty failed to use the magic power of love to transform the Beast into the Prince. Unilke the Juliet she found it impossible to forgive him the death of her sibling. Well, so is life...

IMHO everyone who loves this movie should take a look at the strikingly resembling Soviet masterpiece "Mister Designer" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0157713). Most probably creators of the latter were unaware of the "Blue Beard" movie, nonetheless the psychotic puppeteers leading characters look just like twin brothers! Perhaps this image corresponds to some powerful pan-cultural archetypes.
