Too Late (2015)
A hidden gem
You know how you can tell you've watched an exceptional movie? You don't discuss it right after watching it, but the next day you and your partner are talking over each other as you describe scenes, characters, direction.
"Too Late" is such a film. A tightly-scripted work of character-driven passion, it's one you'll want to watch over again. The settings are LA-typical -- but the conversations therein are crafted with precision. The casting is perfect, the actors fearless and beautifully collaborative. It has heart without any sap, violence without hormones.
Pay attention. You'll actually remember this movie.
Frida (2002)
more applause for Taymor
I chose to go see this on the strength of my enjoyment of "Titus" (which, apparently, most people hated, but which I found visually stunning...). "Frida" does not disappoint. The casting was perfection, the visuals (again) stunning. It was gripping and engaging and thought-provoking. The leads (Hayek and Molina) were fantastic : all the cast were, there were no clunkers. Wonderful to *see*.
The Turandot Project (2000)
stunning
We saw this film last night in a 1920's movie house. "Turandot" is one of my favorite operas, so I was enthusiastic coming in, but was not disappointed. A revealing glimpse into the gargantuan task that was the staging of this opera...plenty of opportunities to hear excerpts (all your favorite bits!)...a chronical of all the inevitable logistical issues...the costuming (a topic worth its own discussion).
Some of the performers are more exciting than others, yes. But all were at least good; some were terrific. What would happen if the director of "Raise The Red Lantern" and renowned conductor Zubin Mehta collaborated? It's worthwhile to find out.
