Definitely Different, Frustrating but Enjoyable
8 November 2015
I enjoy "different" horror movies. I'm not interested in torture porn and gore and people getting chopped up. I want something INTERESTING, whether it's Lovecraft or weird time travel or alternate dimension or thought-created nightmare stalkers - there has got to be a "WHOAH!" for me to enjoy horror movies.

This movie was one of those, with the caveat that, though I won't spoil the ending, if you loathe movies that leave some lingering but relevant questions, you may not cotton to this film.

But like me, if you can separate this "style" of movie-making, which I've seen some just call "lazy", the actual progress of the people and actions in the film were compelling and it is definitely a mystery type horror movie, though not a room-to-room-magnifying-glass type.

If you saw and liked Coherence and I see people are comparing this to Phantoms (I haven't seen that yet, somehow), or if you like the "unknown/invisible", creeping ominous threat movies like Mr. Jones or Resolution, I think you may enjoy this film.

I'm not saying it's perfect - there's a good amount of irritation at a few of the way things go down or people behave, that I felt kept it from being more fluid, and while the acting is by and large at least decent and believable, there are some boneheaded decisions - but not like most horror movies, at least not as frequent - it really doesn't get a chance to build to that level before the horror is in play.

I did like the dialogue for one of the characters, who was a modern sci-fi and horror movie type that was constantly referring to what was going on as something from Stephen King or aliens or zombies or "the spirit of an ancient Indian burial ground", which made me laugh - he seemed the most "real", well, until later, but that's not germane to the point.

Anyway, a lot of people on forums and other sites are giving this a really low rating, and while, for the overall and idea of a complete story, I can kinda see why... I still think what there IS there is good and different and not anything close to "usual horror movie stuff".

I would have given it an 8/10, but I had to stop at 7 because of the unsatisfying or at least not well-enough intimated ending, because I agree with some people that say the "figure out what YOU think it means" is one thing, an artist can't show you a pristine, untouched canvas and say "just IMAGINE the awesome picture YOU want there!".

Good Little Horror Film
27 October 2015
Nothing spectacular or "new", but this was quite competent, I liked the atmosphere and scenes and pacing, there were a few "OMG WHY DID THEY DO THAT", but not many, and for the most part, I was compelled and enjoyed it for what it was. Not quite a main feature, but good to watch and night, and a bit better than a weekend afternoon time.

The thing that keeps them in the same "scene" is both the best and worst part of the movie - you know WHY they have to seemingly retrace their steps and in the movie it makes sense, but as a viewer, it's a bit tedious, but when the action really starts, that all becomes moot.

I was a little surprised it actually stayed pretty traditional, for 2015, in its interpretation, but it worked for this movie, and I enjoyed it and I think anyone that can just appreciate a good monster movie will too.

Must-Watch for Compellingly Atrocious Film Fans
9 February 2015
I give it a 10 in the spirit of amazingly awful films, but I loved this movie! As soon as I read the summary, I knew I had to see it, and I am not disappointed so far. The acting is... well all of it is so ... awkward, sincere and compelling, somehow. An Amish Psychic girl. Demons. Someone I swore was John Denver. The acting. THE ACTING. "YOU'RE TEARING ME APART LISA" acting, only much, much worse.

I did NOT see THAT end coming. And what a tremendous parting line. This movie has to be seen to be believed. Even with its glacial pacing, it's still somehow constantly entertaining! If you love truly horrible but entertaining movies, do yourself a favor and see this!

Solid Moderately Family-Friendly Supernatural Horror Movie
24 January 2013
I've been pleasantly surprised with a few finds of late, that fit the swiftly disappearing "family friendly" horror movies, especially the supernatural horror movies, that can be creepy or even genuinely scary, but do it without resorting to constant blatant jump scares that startle, or buckets of gore, or pad it with gratituitous sex, cursing or drug use.

This movie had a commendable very small cast of just the younger phobic brother, his older brother, understanding and protective but irritated at the younger's phobias, and the older brother's third fiddle but sympathetic girlfriend. To the movie's credit, we get something rarely seen in ANY movie now: likable characters - all of them.

The monsters and the effects don't show up all that much but are used effectively when they do, mostly staying appropriately hidden, leaving the movie to be carried by the acting between mostly the two brothers in tense but mostly ultimately mundane scenes, which is admittedly a gamble nowdays, but I have to say I even enjoyed those.

I really thought this was a very well done movie and I recommend it to anyone who liked traditional cleaner horror movies suitable for mid and late teens and older.
