excellent material, but sloppy editing
27 May 2003
I'll admit up front that I'm a Chomsky fan and it is always wonderful to listen to this man speak. Having read many of his political books he didn't say anything that I didn't already know, but I still enjoy watching footage of his lectures because I don't have the chance to attend any. As he always does, Chomsky delivers straight forward, common sense deciphering of the events unfolding around us in easy to understand words. Unfortunately however the film isn't edited all that well. Many times they show Chomsky ending his lectures and the film feels like it is going to end. Then it starts up again at another lecture. I think 'Manufacturing Consent' was much more successful in the way they edited his various lectures together.

Superfights (1995)
So bad it's funny
8 May 2003
I found this video in a bargain bin for $1. That's about the real value of it. I only bought it because I wanted to see Keith Hackney, a former UFC fighter, try his hand at acting. His role is so small that he isn't given much of a chance to fail. Lucky for him because the others fail miserably. This movie is even worse than Ken Shamrock's 'Champions' if that means anything to you. The fights scenes are flashy but embarrassingly bad. They have some young guy wearing a long white wig and beard pretending to be an old Chinese Martial Arts master and it's hilarious.

Beautiful music, but erratic characters are hard to follow.

A Japanese singer falls in love with an American serviceman in Japan. He goes AWOL and begins selling drugs. They have a very physical relationship that swings from rampant lovemaking to quick violence. The characters all seemed very schizophrenic to me, their behaviour would often change drastically and very quickly I lost interest in them.
