The Little Mermaid (2023)
SING IT HALLE SING IT!!!
As a 45 year old man who displayed no interest in anything The Little Mermaid I have to say I was impressed by this movie! Halle Bailey's role as Ariel peaked my interests in the first trailer. From there I checked out the original cartoon and thought it was okay but needed to be updated to resonate with today's audience. Her voice did it for me though not to mention the special effects displayed. In this movie she was definitely the stand out along with the actress that voiced the sea gull (sorry, forgot her name). My only gripe was the casting of Prince Eric and his unnecessary background story. He also sung the worst song in my opinion. The remix to Under the Sea was great and any song Halle had to sing elevated the enjoyment factor! Watch out for this actress/singer...she is on her way!
A Thousand and One (2023)
SOMETHING TO WATCH BUT....
When I saw the trailer I didn't know what to expect with this film. Teyona Taylor appeared to be the lead actress and I was unfamiliar with her work. The only thing I ever seen her in was Coming 2 America which isn't saying much. The plot seems interesting, a young boy is kidnapped by his mother and they go on to live some sense of a normal life maintaining this secret. Most of the cast did a good job especially the actor, Josiah Cross who plays that young child at age 17 years old. As for Teyona I would have preferred a more experienced actress to be honest. She is good a selling the rough exterior a young black woman in that situation would have but when it came time for her to show some vulnerability she just lost me. There were scenes where the other actors seem to be carrying her scenes especially Josiah. Bottom line it was a good movie to watch with a bit of a twist in the end but nothing I can praise. There were missed opportunities as far as the writing goes in my opinion. Pacing kind of slowed a certain parts. Still, glad I saw it for myself. Hopefully Teyona Taylor will get some more roles in the future that can help to expand her range. Don't bite my head off, just giving my take on it.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)
COMIC BOOK MOVIES ARE TAKING A TURN FOR THE WORST!
I can't say who is posting these positive reviews but you all need to stop it! Reviewing movies is my thing but every once in a while I come across a film that is just not worth commenting on. This is such a movie but I will entertain. Shazam 2 does everything wrong the first installment did and more. Shazam's powers were shared with his foster brothers and sisters, thus making his abilities kind of pointless. His actions in the first film allowed for 3 "evil" gods to attack Earth and now him and the Scooby team must save it....or a city. This movie is loaded with tons of special effects (some actually good), plenty of ridiculous action, and hit or miss humor. The script played as if it was wrote while they were filming and to say it was bad would be an understatement. Bottom line, this film is much of what I hate in comic book movies. I am so sad to see something like this after movies like Logan, End Game, and Man of Steel.
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
NEVER THOUGHT I'D ENJOY THIS BUT...
This is one series to talk about when its completely over! A single mom works part time and gets into a twisted romantic relationship that turns out to be way more than what she originally bargained for. That's putting it lightly! Had a good time with this one. Attempting to figure out each character's motivation and overall goal kept me tuning into every episode with intrigue. The actors' performances really help to immerse into the story. We are all looking for that special person at some point in our life but what would you do to keep them? This film had so many plot twists that it was hard to predict what the outcome would be for each character. Its a thrill to watch, sexy & has compelling writing which is what I expect from something like this and that's what I got. Not totally satisfied with the ending but still a great sit down.

I'D RATHER WATCH AFTER EARTH...AGAIN!
Should have known this movie was going to be a dud! Shame because with the high production value all they needed was a more compelling script to make this somewhat of a good movie. It was Jurassic Park, After Earth, Last of Us, and Prometheus all in one or at least that was what it was trying to be. Its strengths are definitely the visuals. As with most sci fi movies that is a huge part of the appeal of these sort of films. Unfortunately many fail to deliver a compelling script to really engage you in the story onscreen. This one is no different. The fact that two of the main characters we are forced to watch can barely understand each other makes for underwhelming conversation. So the dialogue is weak. I recommend waiting for this to stream.
Creed III (2023)
SORRY ROCK, WE GOT A NEW FIGHTER!
LOVED LOVED LOVED this film! Easily one of my favorite Rocky related movies and that's saying a lot considering that I enjoyed most of them...Rocky V...uhhh, not so much. Michael B. Jordan's first debut as a director is quite impressive! He knew how to get the right shots in and out of the boxing ring. As an actor he delivers as well as newcomer Jonathan Majors as Damian. The story is more personal for Adonis Creed and pushes him into a state of mind we hadn't seen in him before. All the supporting casts brought their A game as well. The movie score was on point, sending chills when heard at just the right time. We have seen plenty of boxing movies but the best ones tend to be about more than just putting on gloves. The stakes are high and the actions of every character are more than justified. I cant say it enough, GO SEE THIS MOVIE!
The Reading (2023)
WAS A HORROR, THEN THRILLER, THEN COMEDY!!!
Just finished watching this movie and I am glad Monique has returned to the movie screen collaborating with Lee Daniels again. Unfortunately, this isn't necessarily what I wanted to for Monique as her comeback film. The movie's strengths are the super natural aspects & Monique's performance. That was quickly replaced by a confusing plot twist, sub par acting from other actors, non sensical sub plots, and pacing issues that caused me to yawn several times over! Monique's performance is scary at times and near comedic especially towards the end. I had subscribed to BET Plus to watch this, but quickly unsubscribed after it was over. This was a good bad movie...
