Cube 2: Hypercube (2002)
Not the worst
*WARNING, MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS* Well, what a typical sequel this was. Bigger budget, more effects but not enough substance.
The acting was nowhere near as refined as in the first film but what do you expect from sequels. The best thing this film had going for it was the cinematography. I thought it was put to great use when the gravity shifted from room to room.
But that's about it. It still had a slight creepiness to it but nowhere near as intense as the original. It also helped that I saw the original in a tiny cinema (seated about 80 people) but I'm sure it would have made bugger all difference with cube 2.
In the end, there was somthing wrong with the whole package. The aura of menace that the first cube managed to generate was fantastic. So where did the menace dissapear to in this film you ask?
When they bring in a human element which is supposed to be behind the existanceof the CUBEs (ie. When the guys dressed in Glad Wrap pull Kate out of the water like substance).
That is not to say it wasn't entertaining. Plenty of fun moments, interesting traps and on the whole perfectly watchable but the whole crap about devious-plots-revealed could have been cut a bit.
7/10
And who the hell is Tracton?
Final Destination 2 (2003)
Horror?
I think the genre should be 'Comedy'. All this pile of crap managed to do is make me laugh, as well as half the audience. Starts off in a very promising way with a spectacular car crash (Filmmakers should however notice one of these days that DIESEL DOES NOT EXPLODE!) and then it all goes downhill, turning into a creative-splatter lesson.
*SPOILERS*
The funniest line (or was it ridiculous?) is and always will be - 'He's going to be attacked, BY A FLOCK OF PIGEONS!'. Apart from that, the only other funny part was the druggie sliced into a few bits by the flying barbed wire fence.
Would be nice to see the money for the next sequel go towards building a giant wall around everyone involved with this one.

Kidô Senkan Nadesico (1996)
Restored faith in Anime
Having received the first volume of this series on DVD for christmas, I only had one thought. 'Can I sell it on e-bay if I don't unwrap it?'
This will teach me to judge a book (or DVD in this case) by the cover.
2 weeks later I figured I might as well put it on and have a good laugh at this potential garbage. How wrong could a man be. Not only did I have a GREAT laugh but I've been turned onto anime a second time. The animation is stock standard but the script more than makes up for this. Well paced, peppered with loads of laughs.
Lets hope the boys and girls in Japan keep cranking out more series like this. *** out of ****
The Train (1964)
Brilliant
I saw this accidentally on Australian pay-TV and it has now become the most played movie in my collection.
It's great to see a 60s action flick rivaling today's movies in raw action and thrills, not to mention great direction from the late John Frankenheimer of Ronin fame.
Why this film is so underrated is beyond me but apart from the very realistic action scenes, the dialogue flows smoothly and there is rarely a dull moment. The B&W also helps enforce the war time feel of the movie.
Great scene is when Labiche is making up the spare part for the steam engine in the workshop as well a fantastic climax between the Colonel and Labiche.
A must see for anyone! 10 out of 10 CHOO! CHOO!
