Waterland (1992)
A wondrous journey into a dark and troubled mind.
A wondrous journey into a dark and troubled mind. Jeremy Irons is in his prime acting form here, as a teacher. Here he tries to enlighten his students with brooding flashbacks of his troubled teen life. The director also allows the students to interact with the flashbacks creating a dreamy, wondrous gloss over some very disturbing imagery. If you loved the Cell and Seven than this may have been one you missed. A must see.
Ricochet (1991)
Why hire Ice T
Ice T is an absolute horrible actor. He reads his lines as if off a cue card, with no emotion whatsoever. This still holds true 11 years later in his TV show. Ok but back to this deliciously ludicrous movie. Russell Mulcahy, if memory serves he did videos back in the early days of MTV, and blew us all away with his original style. Something he maintained with Highlander. It is not his fault this movie lacked plausibility. That guilt, my movie going friends, goes to the script. Laughable dialogue, and an insane ending, so preposterous they need a final scene of a news lady to explain what the tower execution of always awesome John Lithgow would mean for protagonist Denzel Washington and his career. I'm just glad it eventually led to 2 oscars in spite of being part of this USA late night favorite.
Memento (2000)
eivom looc yllaer
I mean really cool movie. It starts at the end, or does it. Each scene begins where the last one ended. Only the last scene was the one just before it. Chronologically speaking that is. What?! You need to pay attention, watch attentively, else you may become more lost than you were before. Mr. Nolan my hat is off to you. This movie has the originality that will enable it to stand the test of time. Worth watching over and over again. Or maybe you will need to, just to see something new that you missed the first 3 times.
Freeway II: Confessions of a Trickbaby (1999)
Instead of Hansel and Gretal it's Gretal and Gretal. Beautiful.
Sometimes movies are not made for mass audiences to enjoy. Some movies apeal to a select few screen lovers. Freeway 2 is one of those movies. Bizare, disturbing and fantastically dark. Not for the faint of heart or easily spooked. A spoof on the Hansel and Gretal tail, only this time it's Gretal and Gretal. (They even lay a trail of crack to mark their way.) Being a friend of political incorrectness, I have found this movie to be better with every additional viewing. Go rent it tonite.
Videodrome (1983)
A Master Filmaker
Ahh, David how you move me. This movie may be a little dated with computers now taking the place of television to a large degree. That said to get one artists lurid conception of the effect tv has on us, see this movie. James Woods was never better, and Debby Harry shows off her acute acting skills as well. The imagery is dark and sometimes disgusting. Sort of like the evening news. Only with better music and incredible visual effects. As thought provoking today as it was 20 years ago. "What's in the box?" "Your head, I have your head in this box."
8 Mile (2002)
Impressive stuff
Leave whatever you like or dislike about Eminem at the door. See this movie for whatever reasons. Believe me, you will be entertained by it's honesty and avoidance of cliche. It is brutal, funny, and ultimately simplistic. But aren't the most memorable of stories that which use the fewest words, yet uses them with a grand purpose? To entertain us, not to preach to us. That is the foundation of this film. Filled with likable and dispicable folks alike. Each one reminding us of someone we talked to just today, or grew up with yesterday. And each time you think a scene in this movie will take the high road, it fails to do. Instead we have glimpses of real life, sometimes fun, sometimes ugly. But always real, maybe a little to real.

Se7en (1995)
Not for the faint of heart.
Yet this ultimate morality play, is also one of the best horror movies ever filmed. Filled with acts so vile so horrible, yet done with such purpose we will ponder the killers acts and poetic explanation of said acts for years to come. A social commentary on a civilization that looks the other way when confronted by cruelty beyond comprehension. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt are a perfect pair of opposites attracting in order to save the world from a souless monster who leads them on a cat and mouse chase of his own choosing. One of my favorite movies of all time.
