In My Sleep (2010)
lgbtq reviewers love this
But straight people won't. I don't hate it but it's choppy. The actors were fine. Lacey Chabert and Abigail Spencer stood out. The rest were meh. Actually a halfway interesting plot. There were a few veteran supporting role type actors and actresses that were reliable also. The thing is there were too many unecessary.shots of the protagonist in his underwear. Quite gratuitous. This was obviously made for women altgough I didn't see any reviews by women referring to him as "eye candy" as some male reviewers did which is fine. This is the type ofmindless movie you can play in the background while messing with your phone or while performing other task. Task.
Reacher (2022)
this is terrible
What an insult to the jack reacher franchise. The d level acting. The hokey plots. The ridiculous dialog. The inferior writing. The movies were clever and smart. This is a watered down facsimile of those bug budget offerings. Big fan of action movies and acton shows but this is just silly. This reminds me of the WB versions of super hero TV movies. I hope the budget was not huge because it looks low budget to me and therefore a lot of money was wasted. The main character is not convincing. He's a fake tough guy like biden. Pretending to be something he's not and fooling no one. Well I guess he's fooling a few.
Poor Things (2023)
soft core porn with unattractive leads
Typical Hollywood garbage exploitation of women. Weak story with decent cinematography as a backdrop to excessive gratuitous sex scenes. It's a joke how there were several references to the male lead being handsome when he actually is troll like in appearance. The female lead is marginally attractive despite references to her as gorgeous. The type that looks good through beer goggles. The weakness of character in these two further diminishes their attractiveness. If I had paid money to see this grossness I would be outraged. As it is I merely am disappointed. Add that she has just one an Oscar? WOW.
The Outsider (2020)
colossal waste of viewers' time and actors' talent but at least they got paid
This is extremely boring and slow. Nothing happens. I thought it would be good since it was prominently featured that Stephen King was the writer. This "effort" is what is known as a paycheck. Some people gave this a ten star rating. Get real. If this is a ten what does a truly great classic get? A thousand stars? I kept watching episode after episode after episode waiting patiently for it to give some thing to hold my interest. Sadly, it failed miserably. Acting was okay actually but the screenplay is so weak and the story so drawn out it is irritating. I'm on episode four and this ridiculous plot still crawls along. Stephen King must be as mentally acute as biden now.
Condor (2018)
tiresome
Like so many shows this starts off with much promise but like with shows these days it seems all the effort is put into the first episode to hook you then with each subsequent episode the story becomes less and less believable and more and more lidicrous in a continuous downward trajectory. This is a common pattern nowadays. It would have been better off as a miniseries, the type the Beitish do so well, with half the number of episodes. Reminds me of the college essays that required a certain number of words. They sold a certain number of episodes based on the pilot so a lot of filler is stuffed in to stretch it out similar in tactic to the aforementioned essay. Or an imdb review. The supporting cast is superior to the amateur leafs. How did this get a second season?
The Rig (2023)
so bad I couldn't hang
There are several familiar scottish/irish/English actors in this boring mess. Actors that heretofore could be counted on to attach themselves to quality projects only. Now I view them as Euro versions of Nicholas Cage. I suppose they tried their best but it's way too slow, way too long and way too unrealistic. The special effects are cheesy. Poor writing? Poor directing? Both. It was a struggle to even stay awake at some points. I wanted to stick with it in case something interesting happened. It never did. As I was watching I was thinking maybe they were trying to build suspense but my wait was never rewarded. If it were a movie instead of a series it might earn three stars. Sad waste of time and money.
The Watcher (2022)
ultimately disappointing
This seems to be a trend with these limited series type projects and even with some features. Top name cast and really good performances. Great cinematography in this case showcasing beautiful homes and scenery. An intriguing plot that turns and builds and pulls you in and then... Pfffft it fizzles with an extremely weak and unsatisfying ending. It is similar to the feeling one gets when watching a series that gets cancelled and ends with a cliff hanging final episode but different in that the ending is bad not because it is not explained but that the ending is totally lame.
It seemed that one could safely watch a show or movie based on a particular actors' judgement to only be associated with quality product but that can't be trusted anymore.
Now one must trust the user reviews. Throw out the tens and the ones to see where an offering falls short or excels.
Luckiest Girl Alive (2022)
glum tv movie
It's usually enjoyable watching mila kunis act and heretofore one could trust her acceptance of a role as a sign of a quality film. Not so much anymore. It's not just true about her though. A lot of actors who would only be involved in a top notch project now accept anything. About this movie in particular, a dreary depiction of a multitude of cliched characters, situations and events. The female protagonist endures a traumatic event earlier in her life and manages a successful career in spite of it. She always feels inadequate however, not having come from money in a world of money. Nothing new here. A few comical quips fail to make this movie an enjoyable mixture of elements that add up to an enjoyable experience. The funniest line in the movie that actually made me laugh was when the woman's editor boss says something about the NY Times being some kind of a bastion of truth.
House of the Dragon (2022)
Riding the coat tails.
Got tricked again. The cashing in on the best tv series in history continues. First Wheel of Time now this. What made GoT great was the top notch production values, the excellent political intrigue and the experienced cast, comprised of seasoned A list English actors and talented fresh players. If you are familiar with British movies and television many of the faces in GoT were instantly recognizable. Both prequels feature a few famous names with large supporting casts of mostly new and inexperienced actors. Season 8 of GoT was better than either of the imitators. Many feel it is unfair to compare but if the main concept is used as the springboard (including the same theme music) it is hard not to. If one has not seen the original one might think this is good.
Steven Kan's Sharks of the Corn (2021)
on par with marvel superhero movies
This is not great film making but it really is relative. A bad movie causes a bad feeling. A horrible movie does the same. Whether it's a low budget movie like this one or a big budget "blockbuster" it's still disappointment.
Suspicion (2022)
started out as an 8/9
Starts out quite interestingly, a mysterious crime thriller that is engaging and suspensful. The plot builds, the characters develop until the final horsehit episode that is totally beyond stupid. Such a sad waste of talent. I wonder how many actors read the script and then turned down working on this pile of garbage. Is Uma Thurmin so desperate for work that she must recite her character's stupendously inane closing dialogue? It's a shame because her acting was great as is the case with most of the cast and she is looking more attractive now that she is older. Shouldn't any of the actors have had enough balls to stand up to the writer and or director and say, "Wait this is the dumbest thing I've ever read. Surely we can come up with an ending that is not such drivel." Only a sheep in the street some of whom were depicted in this lame crap could enjoy this.
Tehran (2020)
action packed
This is a thrill a minute adventure ride. Intricate and unexpexted plot twists make this show pull you in. I'm sure there will be many negative reviews from the anti Israel crowd as this shows the government of Iran as it truly is and the lengths Israel must go to in order to survive this despotic regime.
Blacklight (2022)
antigun neesom
More gun porn from antigun activist neesom. It's the same movie again and again. Like many actors decries guns in America and lives overseas. I have enjoyed his movies in the past but realize the right to bear arms is in The Bill of Rights. How can I enjoy watching him now knowing he badmouths America and guns and makes a fortune from movies about guns and being an American?
Don't Look Up (2021)
POS
Garbage. Corny overacting, lame plot. What posessed these A listers to be involved with this stinkbomb? Was it greed or desperation to be relevant? Were they just trying to keep up their actor's guild health insurance? Sometimes you could tell if a movie was going to be good by virtue of the people involved. It seems less true anymore.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Reminds me of a CW show
I was looking forward to watching this due to the hype and intimations of a GOT type of fare. Not even close. It IS a sci-fi/fantasy tale. It is not on the same plane, unfortunately.
I tried to give it a fair watch by not comparing it to Thrones, which was a little difficult because of the English accents and medieval feel. Rosamund Pike is fine. Excepting her, the level of quality of the actors is not very good.
At times some of the scenery was quite interesting. At other times, the cgi looked weak. Overall, it just seems low budget.
It actually took a little effort to stick with it and not surf away from the first three episodes Amazon released on Nov 19. I'll continue watching to see how it turns out and hope it gets better.
