Project Almanac (2015)
Story seemed moderate, couldn't watch
I ended up listening to the movie. I couldn't watch after 10 minutes or so.
The filming was so terrible I was actually getting sick at some points. I truly believe if this were shot properly it may have been a decent film. They lost the ability to use camera angles and zoom levels to help tell the story -- and this could have been very powerful. But the lazy shaky-cam not only kept throwing me out of the film's reality, but it made no sense half the time.
Acting was OK, story was nothing new, but seemed like it would carry the viewer. I wanted to enjoy it - and gave it a fair chance. It did have it's moments, but nothing outstanding.
It was impossible to get past the horrible camera work, to really get into the movie.
The Frozen Ground (2013)
Couldn't actually see it - way too much shaking camera
Sounded like a great movie, had great actors, but I couldn't tell you. I've never turned off a film faster. Between the cameraman and the editor, I'm guessing a lot of speed must have been consumed. I honestly couldn't see half of what was going on. A shaky-cam shot once in a while is fine, but constant bad shots combined with ultra-short edits, and you and up with distraction rather than a story.
For a few minutes I closed my eyes and listened, and the story really did sound like a strong script... but I was hoping to enjoy the visual aspect as well. Absolutely could not - terrible visual sequences.
Unfortunate... I will look for this director in future to avoid.
Stargate Universe (2009)
Very good, but stop the Shaking Camera!
I loved SG1 and liked Atlantis. So far, I'm very much enjoying this show. While I wish neither of the previous Stargate shows were canceled, this was really one of the only directions left. They had acquired so much power and faced so many insanely powerful enemies in the previous shows, how much further could they continue to write compelling scripts? By putting them at a significant disadvantage, they've allowed for some realistic stakes.
We've gotten a feel for the isolation, and that's been pretty enjoyable. I'm sure we'll see some interactions with aliens soon, and when they come, it might take us back to the days of Season 1 SG1 where we knew it would be rough and the stakes were high.
I'm really looking forward to hopefully many more seasons - but for the love of God, stop the stupid camera movement -- it takes me right out of the fantasy and reminds me it's on TV.
