The January Man (1989)
Its entertaining
I watched this again recently and it's really enjoyable. Sometimes just a funny/fun character played by a really terrific actor is all you need. And this is one of my favorite Kline performances.
I think people need to go back and just enjoy this for what it is: A fun little mystery.
Pretty Baby (1978)
Brave stuff
Louis Malle is one brave director. If this was made today, there'd be countless suits against him. But the cinematography and performances and script are all beautiful done.
Yes... all that has been said about it is true. It's weird and uncomfortable. And creepy.
But I never felt it was exploitative.
The Deer Hunter (1978)
Epic
Cumin's epic is elevated by a sensitive camera and performances that carefully explore the emotional consequences of war. De Niro, Streep and Walken deliver such resonance. This is an anti-war masterpiece that hits hard and although it's three hours long, it never feels slow.
They Live (1988)
A great movie
With a very good plot and has some interesting twists and turns. It has some twists and turns at all the right moments. Also a great commentary on the evils of consumer culture, capitalism writ large, and Reagan's 80's.
OMG that fight scene!!!!
The Transcendents (2018)
A trashy and moving surprise
This movie is a touching story about broken people. It really doesn't fit inside any one genre. It's funny but tragic. Exploitative yet sensitive. Trashy and artful. Grainy and colorful. The characters are ghosts and full-blooded human beings.
A lot of it feels familiar. But I can't place where it's borrowing from. At the risk of sounding ridiculous, it's almost like if Roger Corman made Days of Heaven. Or somehow if Malick made a Corman script.
All that to say: I'm glad I rented it. (I think. I really don't know what I saw)
