American Beauty (1999)
My Second Favorite Movie of All Time
I can not look at a floating bag with out having the line, "Sometimes there is so much beauty in the world..." To me, this a such a poetic piece of film-making. It's dreamlike and since I recently saw Sunset Boulevard I see the similarities to the the structure of the film. And what I appreciate is the intertwining story lines which is so well done. It's shocking to me a movie like Crash is held up like some groundbreaking work. Woof i did not like that film at all. But American Beauty is really well crafted film. I do not think Kevin Spacy will ever do better work. He exhausted his range here and now all of his tricks and ticks seem trite and bland to me.
Bosom Buddies (1980)
I love this show
How silly is this.... I sign up for IMDb because I love movies and my eye is drawn immediately to Bosom Buddies.... I adore this show. Prepsoterous and brilliant. It's probably a huge hit in England, right? Because the English love men in dresses --hee hee... But Tom Hanks is so hilarious in this and I think there is no better show that shows the potential of young actor. In retrospect one can see the tools of his trade being honed. I suppose a case could be made Robin Williams in Mork and Mindy, but wasn't he coked out his mind during the majority of the filming? Plus, I didn't really like the show all that much after season one. Peter Scolari was a great straight man for the show and I wonder what he's doing now. I may have to purchase my first DVD box set -- hee hee.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
My Favorite Movie of All Time
Clever. Humorous. Keeps me company at night. I think I've watched this film 50 times. Maybe even more and I absolutely love it, absolutely think it's one of the best ever made. It is both complex and simple and who knew Jim Carey could actually act. Perhaps that isn't fair but the best work prior to this in my opinion is what he did on In Living Color. Maniac and unconcerned with Hollywood. Here, in Eternal, he is controlled and lovable. There I said it, Jim Carey is lovable. I also think that Kate Winslet is charming. Is she the only actress in Hollywood not afraid of showing here warts? Not that she actually has warts but she's not afraid to have ratty hair, I mean check out her excellent performance in Little Children. What other Hollywood A-list actress would ever intentionally come across as plain -- which she most certainly is not.
