Short Time (1990)
Hard to find but well worth the search!
I first saw this movie First Choice (at the time Canada's HBO) in the early 90's and immediately fell in love with it. Now in my mid 30's I have been lucky enough to find it on DVD to add to my collection. I am very happy as I understand that it is a hard to find DVD and I stumbled across it on amazon one day.
If you are lucky enough to be able to view this movie on DVD or on cable or whatever, have a look. I think just about anybody could enjoy this film as it is able to be very entertaining without being overly vulgar or violent.
This is a funny story about a cop who's physical results are mixed up with another patient and he is told that he is going to die in a short time. He then finds out that his life insurance only pays out if he dies on the job. You can imagine where it goes from there. This movie is funny from start to finish and is worth a look from any movie fan.
8MM (1999)
You have got to love the cheap DVD bin!
I came across this in my local video store's pre-viewed bin by chance. It seemed to me that the last time I saw 8mm was in the theater when it first came out. For some reason I seemed to remember liking this movie, the DVD was anamorphic widescreen and the price was right so I picked it up. I watched it about a week after purchasing it and was not disappointed. This movie although very dark is quite worth watching especially if your a Nicolas Cage fan. However if you are easily offended do yourself a favor and do not watch this movie as it is very intense and potentially offensive to some at various times. This movie is a good mix of drama and action and is very thought provoking. Just about anybody who views this movie will be effected in one way or another, likely not in a negative way but in fact in an eye-opening way.
Downtown (1990)
I can't believe there is only 6 comments on this movie
It is hard to believe there is only 6 comments on this movie. This is a great buddy cop movie, easily one of the better ones you will see. Both Forest Whitaker and Anthony Edwards are fine actors in anything they have been in and this movie is no exception. The action starts right away and is very steady throughout the movie. There is a lot of good comedy in this movie as well, slightly cheesy but no worse then most other movies. Forest Whitaker finally received significant recognition for his acting ability for The Last King Of Scotland, it is about time! His fine performances in movies like Phonebooth, Phenomenon, Platoon, Good Morning Vietnam and countless other roles he has played over the years have been overlooked for far too long! The chemistry between Whitaker and Edwards is very good there are a few very funny moments between them. If you like cop movies take a look you should not regret it and if you do it is like I always say you never have to watch it again.
The Adventures of Bob & Doug McKenzie: Strange Brew (1983)
There's no way I'm gonna crash this truck, this is a beer truck eh!
Good day! When this movie first came out a lot of Canadians were upset because they thought that perhaps this would give American viewers the idea that all Canadians were beer drinking, donut eating, toque wearing hose heads! History shows that this is not true! (I never wear a toque. Ha Ha Ha). I was around 9 years of age when I first saw this movie on First Choice (Canada's lackluster answer to HBO) My dad taped it the next time it was on and I must have watched this movie about 100 times. By my 10th birthday I was about able to recite the dialog word for word (not much to do in Canada when you are 9 years old in 1983...Kidding). Anyhow this is one of the funniest movies anybody of any age will see in their lives. Most people will laugh from the beginning to the end if they have any sense of humor at all. So grab a flat of Molson Canadian, a couple dozen of your local donut shops finest, get out your Coleman stove and some back bacon, strap on your toque and enjoy. This movie is a Canadian institution. "there wasn't much to do all the bowling alleys had been wrecked, so's I spent most of my time looking for beers"
The Horror Show (1989)
This flick is great!
I remember seeing this movie when I was a about 15 and it was great. A lot of people are taking this movie too seriously, stuff like "it has nothing to do with the other house movies" Who cares? Shut your brain off for about 90 minutes and enjoy. You can't go wrong with Lance Hendrikson and Brion James! Spending time fighting over house movies, give me a break. It kind of makes me feel better about my Startrek fetish. Ha Ha Ha Ha! Seriously the part when McCarthy and Jenke are in the car and McCarthy says "I really f!&%ed you up didn't I" and Jenke says back "thats right!" I don't care what anybody says that moment is hilarious. If you have the chance to see this movie do it! If you do not like it you will never have to watch it again and likely will not have the chance anyway. Hopefully some company will put out a DVD release of this some time they may be pleasantly surprised how well it would sell!
High Fidelity (2000)
Not in my top 5 but in my top 100 for sure!
I recently opened the closet to my DVD collection looking for a movie to test out my new bedroom TV. I was looking for an action movie initially when i was scanning through the titles I came across High Fidelity. I am a huge Cusack fan and had not viewed the DVD since when I first purchased it several years ago. At first I could not remember much about the movie but after watching the first hour I remembered exactly why I own it. High Fidelity is a great movie that any movie or music buff could probably relate to in some capacity and enjoy it at least a little bit. Cusack is excellent as usual and Jack Black really shows just a bit of the super talent he would become in the following years. Anybody with a sense of humor should not feel cheated by this movie. You should see it at least once and chances are you will not feel cheated out of 2 hours of your life as can sometimes happen with some of the useless romantic comedies out there. Check it out and if you you don't like it you can come up with a top 5 reasons not to read my comments anymore!
Firefly (2002)
I should apply for a job at fox
I should apply for a job at Fox apparently it's not hard to get one judging by some of the bonehead decisions made there. A friend of mine drug me out to see the movie Serenity, I was not really interested due to not having any idea what it was about. Anyhow I checked out the movie and really enjoyed it. However I found myself asking a lot of questions of my friend after the movie due to not having seen the TV show Firefly. She promptly lent me her box set of the entire series of Firefly. I watched the 2 hour opener and enjoyed it but was not that excited about it. I figured I might as well watch the rest since they were there and once I watched a couple of more episodes I could not stop watching! The show was like nothing I have seen, it was very original and very good. After viewing the entire series I immediately went out and bought my own set. Whether you are a fan of westerns or sci-fi or both or neither I highly recommend checking this show out. It is worth a look for anybody interested in comedy, drama or action it has it all and lots of it! It is a shame it was cut really before it even got a chance to start. It could have been a powerhouse show for Fox TV but they cut it off at the knee as they often do. It really is too bad it could have been one of the most successfully shows of all time!
Hard Rock Zombies (1984)
This movie makes bad look bad
I just recently upgraded my cable and I now a channel that shows the worst of the worst movies I have personally have ever seen! But I love it! I will not mention the channels name but it shows some real beauties! Anyhow I had the bittersweet pleasure of surveying this turd called Hard rock zombies. It is is usually hard to say that a movie is the "worst movie ever" but not with this movie. I think it was actually worse than Dracula 3000 at least there was some actors I recognized in Dracula 3000. I guess not knowing any of the actors in Hard rock zombies is a good thing, It saves me from seeing them in another movie with friends and having to explain to them where I saw that actor before forcing me to talk about this movie again. If you have not seen this movie try to find something more productive to do with about an hour and a half. Anything at all!
