The Idea of You (2024)
Loved it!
I promised some friends I'd sit down and watch it this week and I'm so glad I did! The chemistry between the characters is perfect. The screenplay was so well written too! It's been a while since I got wrapped up in the characters of a romance film but this one left a mark. Not only is this a love story, but it's relatable to anyone who's ever been in a relationship with someone who has an age gap. I definitely recommend it and I'll also be rewatching it in the near future. Being a 40 something mom, it was certainly relatable in wanting to always put your kids happiness first and feeling selfish if you do something for yourself.
Unfrosted (2024)
The title speaks for itself.
Holy Unfrosted. I was really excited to watch this and I was totally bummed at how cheesy and lame it was. I should have known better. It's called unfrosted because it's really bland. All star casts have fooled me in the past, but at least this movie I didn't have to pay extra for and that's the reason for the 4 stars given. Who wrote the screenplay for this movie anyway? So many funny actors and none of them could pull it off. Total bummer. I thought for sure with Amy Schumer and Melissa McCarthy that there would be at least a laugh or two, but nope! Watch it if you have Netflix and be your own judge, but I warned you.
Madame Web (2024)
Not sure what all the hate is about.
I just finished watching the movie everyone apparently hated and I have to say...why? It was entertaining, had backstory, acting was good, and it has Adam Scott. Was it the same level watch as Endgame? No. But I also didn't watch it to compare. I watched it to be entertained and it did its job. Perhaps you could try not hate-watching it and see if y'all enjoy it more. You missed out with your preconceived expectations and forgot that it was not meant to be the best experience of your life, but rather a fun evening with a mostly female cast. Or is that the reason for the low ratings? I guess you are the only one who can answer that.
This Is Me... Now: A Love Story (2024)
Hard to watch.
I'm not gonna lie, I love Jlo. I love her music and I even love most of her movies, but this...this was so hard to watch. I haven't hit the fast forward on my remote so much in my life (10s skip). What is this? Who told her it was a good idea? I'm not even mad at Jlo, I'm mad at Ben and everyone else who fueled it. Girl, for real. Romcoms, yes. Weird musicals with nonsense? No. And it was filmed like a real movie. I didn't look at the budget for this, but if it was more than $100 they overpaid. I'm really shocked and disappointed. So many people in this movie too! Jane Fonda, Trevor Noah, Fat Joe, Ben Affleck...What did they say when they watched the edit? Save yourself some time and pass on this. Watch Wedding Planner or Enough, or Maid in Manhattan. Those are gems. This is the opposite of that :(
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Meh.
You can see they clearly took ideas from Terminator, Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Wars, and plenty of other movies. Visual effects are fantastic, and they should be with a $900M budget, but it felt like it was lacking substance. Character chemistry is ok, writing is decent, it just felt slightly empty with a lot of action. I wish it showed a clear path as to where the movie was headed, it just felt a little aimless with really great graphics.
I didn't hate it, I was entertained for sure and
it's worth the free watch, but I'd never buy or rent it. I hope the second half is better than this first.
The Little Mermaid (2023)
Fail.
I was looking forward to this movie. When I heard they were shaking up the casting of Ariel, I championed for it. That said, it missed the mark at almost every turn. Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy molded their rolls quite well. Flounder's voice was nearly spot on, but the animation of him was bland and nowhere near the original. Sebastian's voice was awful and he ruined "Under the Sea". That was one of the best tracks from the original film and in this film it was forgettable garbage. I waited to watch this at home and I'm so glad I did. I was able to fast forward Eric's long, drawn out singing also. Ugh. Skip this, it isn't worth the watch....and I so wanted it to be.
Asteroid City (2023)
Almost Unwatchable.
The cast list reeled me in. I made the mistake of buying it as a "new release" on Amazon Video. Wow. If you can make it past the first 20 minutes, I'd like to congratulate you. I downloaded this before a very long flight thinking it would be a great way to pass the time. Holy hell, I'd like a refund please! I'd rather have sat through 10 episodes of Bob the Builder than to put myself through the torture of this. I finally gave it one more shot, thinking maybe I had to have a more opened mind. Nope, still garbage. It ended up being background noise and it drove me to do housework. To be honest I didn't hate it, I just really really didn't like it. Weird and bored to tears. Don't waste your time unless it's free and you're choosing it as an alternate for a root canal.
Ghosted (2023)
Love Chris Evans, didn't love the movie.
I love Chris Evan's and I'm always down to watch whatever he's in but this was a bummer. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't very good either. My problem wasn't the storyline, but the script itself. It was bad. Corny lines and some of it felt like it was forced. I realize every film isn't going to have a Marvel budget, but some of the effects were too cheesy. It's hard to watch someone who's been in the biggest movies ever down to this. I do wonder how the film would've turned out if Scarlett Johansson stayed as the lead. That would've been very interesting. I'd say if you're into either one of them give it a shot. It's only a watch it once kind of movie anyway.
Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022)
It's been done.
Nothing special to see here. My biggest problem with the film is the voice. I loved Whitney Houston and listening to the singing in this movie killed me. Whitney's voice was always instantly recognizable, Naomi Ackie is very talented but by no means on the same level. Period. When I did like the music it was clearly dubbed over. I realize it's difficult it imitate such a legend, so don't try unless you're going to get those notes.
I really wanted to like this film, it just missed every mark repeatedly and made me long to watch reruns of the real Whitney. Those are huge shoes to fill and the this wasn't even a solid try.
The Diplomat (2023)
Smart and Edgy
It starts off a little slow, but each episode gets better and better. The script is so well written and the character developments are intriguing. I'm not usually a fan of political dramas, but the small clip on Netflix reeled me in and I'm glad I gave it a shot. I'm really hoping they make a season 2 because I can see this show going in so many different directions. Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell have a fantastic blend of a love/hate relationship that's unexpectedly entertaining. Keri's character is constantly swearing and for whatever reason, it fits the role of her character beautifully. If you're even half interested in political dramas, I'd suggest giving this a go.
And Just Like That... (2021)
Welcome Back!
I can't comprehend the negative reviews. I watched Sex In the City in my 20's and loved it. These women have done such a great job bringing these characters back to present day with relevant issues, while still being true to who they were 20 years ago. While we all miss Samantha, I think they did a amazing job of keeping her memory alive while moving on without her. The whole season is well scripted and beautifully acted. Welcome back, ladies! We missed you!
