For All Mankind: Polaris (2022)
Season 3, Episode 1

Plot holes a mile thick in this episode
5 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The show is supposed to be written by writers who have done some research into space and spacecraft, but this episode doesn't show much of that.

Spoiler alert, the episode involves a thruster valve getting stuck open on a satellite that spins to provide artificial gravity. The first issue I have with this is called "single failure criteria". Nothing that goes into space is designed with a single point of failure that could endanger the craft or the people in it; this preferably something you can do from the control room. You could argue that the manual valve they finally saved the satellite with would meet that criteria, and you would be wrong. To satisfy the criteria, it would need to be a second method of isolating the fuel line that would not involve a space walk, and it certainly would not be placed at the very outside of the station ring where the spinning force (the artificial gravity) is the greatest.

If the artificial gravity inside the satellite ring was actually at 3.96g, then on the outside of the ring (where the valve was) would likely be closing in on 5g's (five times Earth gravity). The young astronaut who saved everyone would be teetering on the edge of passing out, and he certainly wouldn't have been able to life a wrench to close the valve.

The second problem I have with the plot resolution is, in fact, the valve he was turning. He was turning it counter clockwise. In other words, he was opening the valve, not closing it.

It is truly amazing how many writers, actors, and directors get that one backwards, and this episode is no exception.

The third issue I have is the artificial gravity increase. The episode had it up to nearly 2g's (twice Earth gravity) before people started to notice. A 200 pound man would feel like 220 pounds at 1.1g. At 2g's, he'd feel like he was 400 pounds. Trust me, every single person would have noticed the force change LONG before even 1.5g.

The fourth issue I have with it is, "What reduced the speed of the spin?" The young astronaut shut off the fuel flow, and the artificial gravity immediately started lowering. They were in space. Nothing is going to slow down the spin unless a counter thrust was introduced; (which could have been introduced to counter the spin the moment the malfunction was noticed). But no, in the episode, the artificial gravity started lowering the moment the thruster was turned off, violating physics and destroying my trust in the show writers and directors.

Better than advertised
15 February 2024
I am looking at an undeservedly low viewer score. I am writing from the theater as the credits roll.

The plot was fairly original, the acting was above par, the special effects were good, the action and the suspense was decent. The director and writers did a good job.

I do not understand the hate being directed at this movie.

I liked the movie, and though it is u likely to win any Oscars it was a good way to spend an afternoon at the theater.

It was worth my time and my money and no one should believe the poor reviews. Judge it for yourself and go watch this movie. You will not regret it in the least.

Two and a Half Men (2003–2015)

I figured out why the series was cancelled
27 January 2024
I saw up to Season 10 before I took a job in another country, and I never saw the final seasons until now. The show was very funny until around the middle of Season 7, but after that, the storylines of Charlie's drunken debauchery started to get really old, and it was obvious that the writers were loading Alan up to carry the show as Charlie Sheen's personal life bled over into his business life.

When they moved Charlies out and brought Walden in, the show had a fresh revamp that should have lasted another 8 seasons because it was really funny and there was better chemistry in the show than existed before. Bringing in Ashton as Walden was a genius move (he should have kept the beard, though).

Then, as I wrote above, I took a a job in another country and I missed the last two seasons, and I wondered why it ended so soon. Then I bought the entire series and binge watched it. When I saw Season 12, I understood why it ended.

The whole fake gay marriage thing got really old after only about two episodes, and bringing on a new kid to replace Jake was obviously a dead end from the beginning. Nothing against the kid, but there's no acting talent there, and even the writers clearly realized that because he completely disappeared in the final episodes.

The unending gay jokes were absolutely hilarious for about two episodes, but then got old very fast after that.

That plot line killed the show. I guarantee it. Too bad. It was a very good show.

Good start to the series, but the writers need to do some research if they're going to write about radioactive monsters
8 December 2023
One of the earliest things that jumped out at me in Episode One was the reference to the main characters deliberately driving into a radiation field of "5000 milli-rem" that rose to 7000 as they drove. Kudos to the writers for actually using an actual measurement of radiation, but the numbers only mean something if the dose rate is associated with a time unit, such as 5000 milli-rem per hour, or if it's referencing a total dosage of radiation such as 5000 milli-rem to the whole body.

But radiation dose rate is typically measured in milli-rem per hour, or per minute. So if the characters are entering a 5000 milli-rem per hour field, then that means they'll reach their annual allowable dosage in one hour, and after 100 hours, they reach the radiation dosage where 50% of people are expected to die, and the remaining 50% will be very ill for a long time, with significant odds of developing cancer. If it's a 5000 milli-rem per minute rate, then the characters would likely die in 2-3 hours.

The scene was set in 1958, as I recall, but though our understanding of radiation was relatively primitive in those days, they still knew enough that the characters should have known they were entering a very dangerous radiation field.

A little bit of research on the writers part would have made the scene more believable and more accurate.

The second issue I have is that Hollywood writers don't know the difference between "radiation" and "contamination". The characters put on filtered gas masks, stating that those masks would help protect them. Masks do NOTHING to protect you from radiation. Radiation is light waves or particles. The dangerous forms of those are x-rays or gamma rays (light) and gas masks WILL NOT protect you from those forms of radiation AT ALL. The particle radiation types are alpha particles (basically a high energy helium nucleus), beta particles (high energy free electrons), or high energy neutrons. Your skin will stop the first two, but not high energy neutrons. Alpha and Beta radiation is mainly dangerous to the eyes, and if your breath in or swallow something that is emitting Alpha or Beta radiation.

The gas masks WILL protect you from breathing in or ingesting contamination, in the form of radioactive dust or air borne particles that would emit alpha or beta particle radiation, but as I stated, the masks do NOTHING to help you with gamma rays or neutrons, which unfortunately, would be the most common forms of radiation emitted by the fictional monsters depicted in the movies.

I don't fault the writers too much, as they are just following their misinformed predecessors, but at a certain point it would be nice to see them get nuclear theory correct. All they really need to do is contact a member of a radiation protection team at any nuclear power plant, or a licensed reactor operator such as myself. A thirty minute lesson in radiation could fix a ton of poorly informed writing.

The Marvels (2023)

Better than other reviews indicated
14 November 2023
The original Captain Marvel movie is my third favorite Marvel movie, behind only Infinity War and Winter Soldier, and though The Marvels is not it's equal, it is a fun movie and is clearly going to be a linchpin pin introducing the next phase of movies and tv series.

The acting is great, with Brie Larson perfectly portraying the character of Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel); the studio could not have picked a better actress for that part than her.

The story briefly dipped into the realm of silliness a couple of times, but my issues with them are minor and easy to overlook, particularly since one of them contained a beautiful song and dance routine.

I recommend seeing this movie on the big screen in 3D and I also intend to buy it.

Don't believe the propaganda that is based upon racism rather than actual evaluation of the movie.
12 September 2023
By and large, I'm not overly fond of the trend of making cartoons into live action movies; but the incredible overreaction of talk show hosts, politicians, and other people with tiny minds convinced me that I NEEDED to watch this movie, because those aforementioned people were clearly afraid of something.

So I finally watched it when it began streaming and I was not disappointed.

The underwater CGI is imaginative and well done (physical prop proponents... we're in the 21st Century, get over it and move on with your lives). The only reason I didn't give it a higher rating is because I found the new music to be uninspired and in some cases, not really fitting well with the movie; and I also thought that Melissa McCarthy pushed the overacting a bit too far; but other than those two things, I thought the movie was quite well done.

Will I watch it again? Probably not, unless a future granddaughter insists on it, but by the same token, I'm unlikely to rewatch about 80% of the movies I've ever seen, so this is nothing different.

A fun watch, but the realism suffered
9 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If you love to watch hundreds of bad guys get killed, then the John Wick series is the one to watch, but you need to leave your sense of reality outside and prepare to devote all your energy to maintaining your suspension of disbelief.

The most challenging obstacle I encountered was the way they exhibited Kevlar suits. Apparently the director would like you to belief that if you hold up a icee of Kevlar fabric then bullets... I dunno... bounce off?

That's not how Kevlar works, people. The Kevlar might stop the bullet from penetrating, but it does nothing to mitigate the kinetic energy of the bullet.

I watched a news reporter "demonstrate" his Kevlar vest, as he had a fellow employee literally shot him with a low caliber bullet from close range. The vest did stop the bullet, but the impact knocked him on his back and broke two ribs.

You can hold up your Kevlar jacket lapel and the the bullet's energy will rip it out of your hand and, best case scenario, break half the bones in your face.

Then there is the fact that all those trained killers seem unable to hit anything vital, despite the two or three thousand rounds fired. They must all be retired Galactic Stormtroopers.

Then there's this dog that keeps killing assassins, but apparently only one of them ever thought about shooting the dog. Who knew that hired assassins were also animal lovers?

If you can make it through the movie without shouting out "Oh come on!", then you will enjoy it. If not, skip it and sneak into a different theater.

Renfield (2023)

Surprisingly good
7 May 2023
I came in with fairly low expectations and walked out impressed and entertained. The story was simplistic, but created what could actually be a redemption for the pitiful character of Renfield that was introduced by Bram Stoker in the original book of Dracula.

Akwafina gives her best performance to date, and Nicolas Cage does not disappoint in his portrayal of the Count himself. I enjoyed the movie much more than I thought I would and came away pleased and satisfied with the acting, the action, the direction, and the screenwriting. Kudos to everyone involved in the production of this movie. 8 stars.

Cocaine Bear (2023)
8/10
The funniest movie I've seen all year
13 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't think a director could make a movie about a bear killing and eating people into a comedy, but I was so very wrong. The entire audience was practically rolling in the aisles laughing as a bear high on cocaine killed hikers, punks, and a cocaine smuggler.

The vine photography was spot on, using slow motion at the right places, and the script was just ridiculous enough to make it work.

If they gave Oscars for bears (even cgi bears), this film would win at least one award.

Actually, if that bear was always cgi, then it was damn good James Cameron level cgi.

Highly recommended for 13+.

Bizarre but hypnotic movie
12 January 2023
This was perhaps the strangest movie I've watched in a decade, but I found that I could not look away. Adam Driver is always excellent and he perfectly acted the part of a strange man in a myriad of strange situations. The point of the movie still escapes me, so I may have to watch it again with fewer distractions to see if I can figure it out. Or perhaps there is no point to it, much like the lives that most people live: so point, just a long series of unconnected events that ultimately blend to make a life. Regardless, this movie was one of those that you couldn't walk away from, no matter how strange it appears.

The loss of Chadwick Boseman has never been greater
21 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had been out for a month before I saw it, so I had seen many reviews that indicated this movie underwhelms, and so I set my expectations accordingly; and I was still disappointed. Letitia Wright is a decent actress, but a leading lady she is not. Full disclosure, during the pandemic she came out as an anti-vaxer and I'll be honest, that fear and distrust of science made her absolutely unbelievable as a genius scientist, and her acting skills are insufficient to overcome that fact.

Adding to the lack of a strong leading actor is the fact that the plot was pretty thin. An undersea city attacks Wakanda and kills their queen, and then expects Wakanda to ally themselves with the attacker? That is a tactic guaranteed to NOT create an alliance. Also, has no one in these places heard of bullets? Very effective at stopping people from slowly climbing onto ships.

Visually superb, but the story is not up to par (spoiler alert)
21 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As expected, this movie is visually spectacular with cutting edge animation. I did have warning that the story was a bit on the slow side, and I adjusted my expectations to accommodate; but not quite enough. The first issue I had with the story was the fact that the villains focused on taking out our hero Jake and his family. By all means, let's ignore the Navi attacks and send the clones that cost a bajillion space credits to make after Jake, who "ran away to hide"; and the fact that he ran away to begin with was the second issue I have with this script. Neither of these two plot twists are believable.

I guess the lack of believability can be forgiven, as this movie is clearly a setup for a final confrontation in the third movie.

Cats (2019)
8/10
The music and dancing are the entire point. That was the intent for the play, and the movie adapted it very well.
7 December 2022
The people who rated this movie so low are clearly from a background or generation that has been spoiled by modern movies to the point that they haven't needed to use their imagination since kindergarten. They clearly were expecting to see CGI cats aka the "live" movie version of the Lion King, but honestly, watching these dances being done by cat bodies would just be... weird and disturbing.

People who watched this movie expecting award winning dialogue or an intriguing plot worthy of a Screenwriters Oscar were ALWAYS going to be very, very disappointed. The plot/storyline was NEVER the point of the play, but rather, it's a very thin framework created ONLY, and I do mean ONLY, to display the music and the dancing. On the other hand, anyone who ever saw and enjoyed the play undoubtedly enjoyed the movie because of the faithful adaption of the music and dancing.

The MUSIC and DANCING. That's it. There was never, ever, ever going to be anything else. That's the whole point of the play, and the whole point of the movie. If you go to the Broadway play or the movie hoping to be entertained by ANYTHING ELSE, you are going to be very disappointed.

Francesca Hayward performs the role of Victoria perfectly, and honestly is one of the most talented dancers I've ever had the pleasure of watching.

Dame Judi Dench is always marvelous and did not disappoint, and Idris Elba as Macavity was spot on.

Frankly, I had forgotten that Taylor Swift was in the movie until I came to IMDb to do this review and scrolled through the cast. All I knew was the woman singing as Bombalarina knocked the song out of the park, and now I know why.

The sets and costumes (cgi aided) are faithful adaptions of the play. The music and dancing were perfectly performed by the entire cast.

Many people have described this movie as the worst of all time. Buddy, it's not even the worst movie I've seen TODAY, but I came in expecting singing and dancing, and I was not disappointed.

The intent was clearly to produce a film version of the play with some added cgi effects, and they were quite successful in this endeavor. Because of the bad reviews, I came into this movie with extremely low expectations and ended up impressed enough to write the longest review of my life to defend it.

It's rare to see a show "jump the shark" in its first season
2 July 2022
After watching this episode, I'm resetting my expectations to a much lower level. There had to have been literally a thousand other ways to eliminate the doctor's sick daughter story arc. They may have picked the worst choice. I'm still giving it five stars because the actors did their best to make this silly story work.

Megan Fox gave the most believable performance of her career
3 May 2022
Sue the budget was low, and the story has been done a dozen times, but I was pleasantly surprised by how well Megan Fox did. Her line delivery was smooth and natural, and her performance was believable. I gave the movie seven stars, mainly of the strength of Megan Fox's performance. She has clearly grown as an actress, and perhaps the director was more suited to her natural style.

Enjoyable movie but suspend your understanding of science
17 February 2022
Halle Berry was wonderful, as usual and the CGI is awesome. The story is entertaining, and though the characters make questionable choices, you still root for them.

If you understand anything about orbital physics at all, then set your science aside, because multiple laws of physics are defied here... but I've seen worse.

Wonderful rendition of a classic book
17 February 2022
I had read the book years ago and honestly couldn't remember whodunit. The movie did not disappoint, I didn't figure it out until right before the reveal. It was well acted all around, and Kenneth Branagh's portrayal of Hercule Poirot is spot on, with most of the rest of the cast doing phenomenal jobs.

I've been to Egypt three times, and it was entertaining to watch a potential version of what the Nile looked like prior to the flood control and the flood of tourists. It was beautifully done, and the set artists need an Oscar.

Such potential but consistently gets distracted
8 February 2022
This show has great actors and incredible sets, but the storylines get bogged down with over the top emotional scenes and far too much detail in personal relationships. The amount of dialogue repeatedly spent making sure everyone knows beyond a shadow doubt that Lt. Cmdr Stamets and Dr. Culber are in a stable gay relationship (that is completely normal and 100% accepted by everyone in the future), especially in the first season, is so far beyond what is necessary that it actively becomes tiresome; and the number of moments when Michael Burnham reacts with extreme emotion to events is astonishingly inappropriate for someone supposedly raised in a Vulcan culture. Honestly, half of the characters have such extreme emotional insecurities that they probably shouldn't be allowed access to weapons or warp core technology. They certainly would fail the psychological exams necessary for command positions in a real situation.

This show has such promise and could achieve greatness, but they need to dial the emotional scenes back about three dozen notches, and for God's sake, stop making sure that everyone knows the sexual orientation of the characters (we get it, they're gay, and it doesn't matter to us until it gets in the way of the storyline), and please stop spending entire episodes dealing with the emotional insecurities of the characters.

A big hot mess
25 November 2021
I'm not sure where Andy Serkis was going with this movie, and I don't think he was either. If they were going for humor, no one in the whole theater laughed at any time in the movie.

If he was going for an action movie, well you had that, but it was all over the place.

The "character development" mainly consisted of incoherent arguing about chickens and chocolate.

With my Regal pass, it cost me 54 cents to watch this movie and I overpaid.

I am a major Marvel fan, but no one ever needs to watch this movie ever again.

Good movie for children, not adults, and especially not Marvel fans
4 May 2020
This may be the most poorly marketed movie in history. Early reviews appear to have been from a bunch of Marvel fans who came to this movie expecting to see Iron Man, perhaps because of the way it was marketed. Clearly, people with this mindset were disappointed, as were non-Marvel fan adults who expected to see a movie with humor that adults get but flies over the heads of their children. This is a movie for children 10 and under, 13 on the outside. The sets are excellent, the special effects are good, and the jokes are meant for children to laugh at, but not necessarily adults. If you have something else to do and your children need a distraction, this is your movie.

Political Commentary that needs saying
27 April 2020
There are reviewers here who are upset because Silverman is "liberal-splaining" political concepts. Well, based upon the state of the nation, and Trumps approval ratings inexplicably still in the low 40's, apparently some political concepts, and the hypocrisy of evangelical and conservative leaders need to be explained, because those people are clearly not aware of their own hypocrisy and flawed beliefs. I'm not surprised this was canceled because liberals already understand these issues and conservatives don't like being called out.

Overrated and overhyped
20 April 2020
I know some critics fell over themselves praising this movie, but I was very underwhelmed. I vastly respect the men who actually fought in one of the most terrible wars in history, but honestly, this movie falls short of honoring their memory. The acting is very rigid and I honestly had a hard time caring about him or his quest. When he finally delivers the messages, neither the colonel or his partners brother receive the news with much emotion. Rather anticlimactic. Good cinematography is the main reason I rated it as high as I did.

Underwater (2020)

Worth watching, but don't pay extra money to rent
19 April 2020
A decent watch if you can completely suspend your disbelief, AND it's on a streaming media you've already subscribed to, but don't pay money to rent it. Lots of action, but the premise is unexplainable. Let's completely set aside the unexplained monster subplot for a moment in favor of other unbelievable issues. Drilling for oil in the deepest trench in the world by a 'for profit' corporation who is building hugely expensive and unnecessarily gigantic underwater stations, complete with nuclear reactors, deep inside one of the most active earthquake faults in the world, (seriously, it's a trench because it's between two tectonic plates), that at nearly seven miles underwater it is the most hostile environment in the world? Only if there's literally no other source of oil in the world and the oil is infused with diamonds, gold, and viagra. Plus, the writers clearly have zero understanding of nuclear power. One, a nuclear meltdown is not an explosion (the Chernobyl explosion wasn't nuclear, watch the mini-series). Two, there is no built in mechanism to deliberately cause a meltdown, everything is designed to stop one. Three, the Marianas trench might actually be the safest place in the world to have a nuclear meltdown; no water currents to carry irradiated particles to other parts of the world, and an inexhaustible supply of freezing cold water to collapse steam bubbles and remove decay heat. In fact, due to that last one, I'm not sure a meltdown would even be possible there. But if you can set all that aside, keep your expectations set on "thrill ride with very little plot required", you will enjoy this movie.
