Lincoln (2012)
Saw it twice and already have plans to see it again!
I went into the theater expecting a remarkable, powerful film, and came out both times with my expectations exceeded. The acting is superb and the cast is top-notch. Daniel Day-Lewis did such a good job portraying Lincoln I constantly had to remind myself I was watching an actor play Lincoln and not Abraham Lincoln himself.
This is definitely not an action film--it is mostly dialogue. But the dialogue throughout the movie was gripping, moving, and frequently quite humorous! Those who know even a little about Abe Lincoln will know that he was fond of telling funny stories, and Spielberg did a fine job of incorporating that right from the beginning. And just about every other thing said by Thaddeus Stevens (Tommy Lee Jones) was funny, whether meant to be or not.
The film is two and a half hours long, but is well worth sitting through, even multiple times as I have. After all, it is hard to condense so much history, even for just a short period of America's past, into even this length of a film.
"Lincoln" is an excellent film for both history buffs and those wanting to know more about him and our nation's history alike. If you are proud to be an American, I urge you to go see this at the next showtime after reading this review!
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Brilliant
This is my second-favorite movie of all time. The songs are heartwarming, and maybe the songs we most remember through our lives. It may be so great because it is such an old movie. Now all of the movies are just plain boring and dry. This is a great movie for nearly all ages, but the witch may scare those under 3. When it's on TV, I always try to catch it, but if I miss it, I have the DVD anyway. It doesn't follow the book very closely, but is nevertheless a classic. This movie has a special place in nearly everyone's heart forever. People who don't like it don't know what they're missing. The Wizard of Oz will remain loved for as long as the world turns, not just because it's entertaining, but because it teaches us so much. If you haven't seen it, which is doubtful, go out and rent it now.
Norbit (2007)
How you doin'? Do not read if you haven't seen this!
This movie is both stupid (very, very stupid)and hilarious! It's a riot when Rasputia (what an awful name, almost as bad as Norbit's name) makes the horn honk with her fat boobs. Mr. Wong steals the picture, too, especially with his, "Bingo! Right in the blowhole!" I don't know why so many people hate this movie so much. In the theater, I cried from laughing so much! I'm not racist, and I don't hate fat people. But this is a movie, people...a movie. You're supposed to laugh at it! If I saw someone laughing at a black or fat person for real, I'd be pretty upset.
Memorable "Norbit" quotes: Rasputia-"How you doin'?" "You do it!" "Don't adjust my seat!" "Sounds like it's raining outside." "Say Tuesday again, and you ain't gonna see Wednesday!" Norbit- "Chocolate drop, I'm home!" "Halt!" "Happy Presidents Day!" Mr. Wong- "Bingo! Right on the blowhole!" "Norbit! Why you run off like little b***h?" "It is long time in h**l before Wong suck poison out of another man's a*s!"
Overall, this is a great and funny film, and if you love comedy and/or Eddie Murphy, then this movie is for you! Go out now and rent or buy it!
Clue (1985)
Communism is just a red herring....
What a great movie! Clue is one of my favorite movies, and the board game is my favorite game. This film is great to watch on a stormy afternoon or night, which would fit right in with the movie, and even give it a scarier feel. The filmmakers did go a little bit far from the board game, but it was probably to make the plot better, and to make more sense. In the movie, Mrs. White was a guest, but in the game, she was the maid. Tim Curry is a riot as Wadsworth, the butler, but really Mr. Boddy. He looked hilarious when he was imitating Mrs. Peacock's screaming about the supposedly poisoned brandy. Professor Plum was funny when he kept trying to get Miss Scarlet's attention, even though she became annoyed. My favorite part is when Mrs. White, Col. Mustard, and Mrs. Peacock are making out with the corpses of Mr. Boddy and the cook, playing to "Sh-boom." All in all, this movie is a masterpiece, and perfect for family viewing on Halloween or a stormy night, but is also perfect to watch any day. If you haven't seen it, go to your local video rental store and rent it now! You'll be rolling on the floor!
Mama's Family (1983)
I'll bet the neighbors are just loving this!
This show is hysterical! Vicki Lawrence is hilarious as Mama, and Ken Berry is a riot as Vint, who's one string short of a shoelace. The first two seasons were pretty funny, but the Season 3-6 episodes were better. I especially like the episode where Mama gets a radio show. But in the beginning of season 3, I think Iola should've had a more proper introduction, although she was mentioned a few times in seasons 1&2 as "Ms. Boyland." I love the way Iola pouts, and I admire her loyalty to her parents (even though she was a little too loyal). Sometimes I thought Naomi (as in the character, not Dorothy Lyman) was something that I shouldn't say, but she was kind of a hoot, especially when she squeaks her voice, like when she calls, "Vinton!" It's too bad Eunice was only in seasons 1&2, because she, too, was a riot, the way she freaked out over things. I would have liked to see her and Bubba form a reconciliation. Overall, this show is a knockout still after being ended for 17 years, and I'm glad it's being shown on the ion channel. 9/10.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
Original was better, but I liked this one
Frankly, I liked the original movie better, but this one's good, and more true to the book (to a point). I thought Wonka was scary, and I knew those weren't his real teeth. Some of the songs scared me, but those I laughed at the most. ("Willy Wonka:The Amazing Chocolatier"; "Veruca Salt"). They should've put in the thing where Charlie and Grandpa Joe go up the bubble thingy, and the part with the lickable wallpaper. The graphics were better than the original, at least in the chocolate room. Deep Roy was good as the Oompa-Loompas, but the ones from the original were better, and so were the songs. I thought Mike Teavee was a bit too rude in this movie, as well as Augustus Gloop. They weren't that rude in the original. But if you're a big fan of Tim Burton, you must see this movie, along with "Corpse Bride." 8/10.
Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide (2004)
I'll Miss It
I've always loved this show, and I'm sad to see it end. I was hoping there would be more episodes after the "Field Trip," but I guess that won't happen. But if we keep begging for more like they did with 7th. Heaven, maybe the producers will add another season. As soon as I saw the episode when Cookie got a moustache, I knew the show was bound to end soon. All the good Nick is being taken away. First it was the Amanda show, then All That, and now Ned's. Let's hope Drake and Josh isn't next, because that's the only good show on Nick left, besides Spongebob. I'll miss Krubs's weirdness, and his mispronunciation of words, like saying "Moi" (me in French) with muy (Spanish for very). I'll miss Mr. Kwest's "Sh-Sh-Sh-Shwaw," and the comb-over guy's comb-over. I thought Cookie was really funny.Point is, I'll really miss this show a lot, but at least there will be reruns, so I can see all the funny episodes again. If you miss it as much as I do, sign the petition to save the show on the Ned's message board.
The Day Lincoln Was Shot (1998)
The best Lincoln movie !
I love TNT's "The Day Lincoln Was Shot." Call me weird, but I watch it on VHS every Friday night. I'm a big history buff. I wish it was on DVD so I could watch it in my living room. My VCR is in my finished basement. Although there were a few minor historical errors, this movie was great. Lance Henrickson did a marvelous portrayal of Lincoln. If you took a black and white photo of Henrickson as Lincoln, most people would think it was actually Lincoln! It's too bad this wasn't a theater movie, because it would look great on the big screen, especially the theater scenes. When I watched this movie, I felt like I was really at Ford's Theatre the night Lincoln was shot. The first time I saw it, I nearly cried. The music gives the movie a sad feel, and those times were very sad. I wish they'd put it on TV every anniversary of the assassination, but I checked the online TNT schedule, and it was not on there. Maybe I missed it. Anyway, you should buy a used copy from Amazon.com. Although they are used , they are in mint condition. If you like Lincoln as much as I do, buy or rent this! It is a must see! Attention Teachers: I recommend this for classroom use, and it is a movie which your students may actually like!
1776 (1972)
I love this movie!
This is one of the few musicals I like. I especially like the opening song, "Sit Down, John." I only have 2 complaints: Some actors did not resemble the signers too well. William Daniels looks nothing like John Adams, John Dickinson should've had blonde hair, not brown, as shown. John Witherspoon should have looked older. Also, the declaration was really signed August 2, 1776, not July 4. But the musical numbers are great! The bell at the signing gives the movie a dramatic feel. This movie is entertaining, and great to watch on July 4, or Just on a rainy day. If you haven't seen this, you must. I love Benjamin Franklin's humor and wit. I especially recommend the director's cut, which includes the originally cut number, "Cool, Considerate Men." It's too bad most of the actors are dead. I looked at the actor's pages, and most died in their fifties or early sixties! Anyway, I love this movie as much as I love "The Wizard of Oz." This movie is a must-see!
