Ashes (2024)
8/10
Complex psychological thriller
21 February 2024
Not sure why all the bad reviews. I definitely enjoyed this film, a welcome departure from the usual Turkish traditional dizis which I also love for different kinds of viewing pleasure.

So happy to see Alperin back in anything. Been missing him and his gifts as an actor. Funda Eryigit is also excellent as she was when these two acted together in Son Yaz(a great binge). The husband Mehmet Gunsar Is also great but I am unfamiliar with him up until this film.

Ashes presents a very passionate, deeply psychological, sophisticated and complicated plot with lots of interesting twists and turns and in the end, much is left up to the individual viewer's interpretation. Still thinking about it and trying to understand what it all meant- in a good way.

Charming, Loved every minute!

Charming, engaging, insightful very contemporary film about love and relationships.

Fabulous acting as always by Kivanc Tatlitug and Beren Saat. Always both excellent. Definitely a departure from some previous roles in Turkish Dizis. Some very surprising(for Turkish film) but welcome steamy moments of many kinds. Beren Saat is amazing as she enters an orgasm contest in a nightclub in NYC. Crazy, fun idea in the script. Very New York. Story set mainly around 24 hrs in New York City with a few unexpected twists and turns. The two leads play off beautifully against each other. Each are completely compelling to watch. I will say no more other than I highly recommend watching this film!

Extremely well done

So far the series is one of the best. Raises the issues os social class in a powerful and realistic way.

Yabani Ali is a great protaganist. You empathize and fall in love with him immediately. His mother also is so gifted in this role as is the entire family including the unwelcoming evil twin siblings, mean and up to no good so far. I hope they mellow a bit bc continuing on that path will soon be too much oa a trope, tiring to watch and unnecessary to tell this often both heartbreaking and uplifting story.

The plot revolving around Yabani's street family is also heartwarming to watch and Im also hoping that part of the plot doesnt deteriorate.

The Calling (2022)
10/10
Excellent show
1 December 2022
Refreshing, inspired, quirky, engaging, new kind of cop show. The cinematography of the city is great(how could you not be pulled in immediately upon seeing the Brooklyn Bridge in all its glory). The characters are fascinating, the acting ever intense and amazingly real. The dialogue is reminiscent of a David Mamet screenplay. The stories are dark and completely compelling. I preferred the first case to the second, but both are excellent.

I see that as of now, The Calling has not been renewed. I, for one would be extremely disappointed not to meet these characters again and watch their relationships to themselves and each other evolve.

Could not stop watching....

Loved Conversations With Friends... Alison Oliver and Joe Alwyn are amazing together, so much chemistry with so few words, and some initial social awkwardness as their characters are written. Not sure how anyone can say there is no chemistry. Perhaps those reviewers do not understand how complicated those characters are. You really feel those intimate moments and the heat and intense longing, that help to foster their instant connection.

Every character- Bobby, Melissa, Frances, Nick are fascinating to watch where they go, grow, and are stuck- throughout the series, as well as the roles of Frances's parents, and her evolving relationship and ultimate capacity to express her love for them.

I binged Conversations in one sitting and Im sad it is over. Without any spoilers, I will say that I loved the ending, the last 5 minutes especially.

I dont think it is fair to Conversations to constantly compare the characters, the story, and definitely not the acting. I think Conversations should be evaluated and enjoyed completely on it's own merits, of which there are so many.

Shithouse (2020)

Exquisitely real, a gem of a film

So glad to have come across this film. Such a warm, lovely, sometimes painful slice of that time of life. Cooper's film is such an accurate depiction of those early struggles away from home, trying to separate, to make real connections in an environment where that is so often not the norm, even the outcast.

Cooper(and his character)is all heart, so sincere, so earnest, so appealing in every way. On the one hand it is hard to believe that at 23, he could both write and act so beautifully but then again who could do it better than both the adolescent and young man who lived it. How fortunate that Mark Duplass recognized Cooper's gift and moved it along for us all to experience.

Looking forward to Cooper Raiff's next film/films!
