Maniac (2018)
Still not sure what it's about, but I loved it
I've never felt this way after watching this show, and the only conclusion I can draw from that is that it's amazing. I wish I knew what this show was about, because it's great and I feel like there are deep lessons to be learned from it. Guess I'll just have to watch it a few more times.
Acting was great. Story was weird (and great). If anybody rates this 1/10, I wouldn't fault them, but they'd be wrong - yet I wouldn't know how to convince them that they're wrong.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Even better than the original
I'm a big fan of Blade Runner. It's not in my top 10, but definitely in my top 100. I was cautiously optimistic for this, but it completely blew me away. I don't think anybody but Denis Villeneuve could've pulled it off.
It felt like a true sequel, and that is surprisingly hard to pull off. It maintains the spirit of the original, while expanding on the story and the characters without going overboard. I couldn't have hoped for or imagined anything better.
Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj (2018)
I had high hopes
I was a big fan of Hasan's when he was on the Daily Show. His stand-up is prety decent, too. This show has potential, and it seems like a show I'd really enjoy, but I didn't love it and it's hard pinpoint why. Mainly, he just seemed like he was trying too hard. He looked like a 33-year old trying to act like a 20-year old. (I'm 35) The themes for each episode seem too unrelated to each other, like he's not sure what he's trying to accomplish with this show.
I guess the best way to describe this show is that it's a less funny, less poignant & less entertaining version of John Oliver's show. Season 2 (if there is one) might be better, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll probably still watch, but only when I run out of other things to watch.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Holy $#!%. Favorite new show of the year.
I love horror. I love a good family drama. I love good film-making. I love attention to detail. This show is 10/10 for all of the above.
It takes A LOT to scare me, and this show succeeded. I can't remember the last time I was this terrified by a show/film. My wife won't watch anything scary, so I watched this alone in the dark (the only way to enjoy horror) and I literally had to watch a sitcom after each episode just so I could fall asleep. I don't know how they did it. It wasn't the jump scares (there weren't many) or the terror in the actors faces (there wasn't much). It was the sense of realness, and the empathy for the characters. My sense of excitement for each new episode was matched only by my fear/dread for watching each new episode. But even if it weren't scary, this show is film-making at its finest. I don't know how the directors got so much out of those child actors.
Now if I could only find someone to re-watch it with.
Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966)
My All-time Favorite Movie
To me, this is the greatest film ever made. Leone's flawless vision, the panoramas, Morricone's score, the acting, the pacing, the twists, the gun battles, the costumes, the attention to detail, Clint Eastwood (the only man I'd ever consider going gay for) in his prime, etc, etc, etc.
If this isn't in your top 10, watch it again. If it still isn't, there may be something wrong with you.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Good Spiderman movie. Terrible 2-D animation. WAY overrated.
I honestly don't understand the hype. The movie was fine. My kids enjoyed it about as much as I did (I'm 35, they're 6, and we all love superhero movies). I really enjoyed the movie at times, and was bored at other times. The comedy was great and the plot was original/decent. For the first 30 minutes of the movie, I thought we were being shown the 3-D version. I looked around to see if people had the glasses on. The random guy next to me was doing the same, and he left to get glasses for him and his kids. He let me try them to prove to me that the animation was not in 3-D, but rather was just bad animation.
Here are my guesses for why the ratings are so high:
1) Only really big fans of Spiderman, comic books, and/or cartoons have seen this movie, so the scores haven't been evened out by the average moviegoer.
2) Many reviewers saw it in 3-D, and the animation looks like it was designed solely for 3-D. If I felt like wasting my money, maybe I would've enjoyed it more.
3) Critics are mostly nerds, and the nerdy critics are the only ones who watched this. They're probably all the same critics who love the CW superhero shows.
4)
I don't see how this is higher than a 7.5 on iMDB, and 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Atlas Shrugged: Part I (2011)
After reading bad reviews...Very pleasantly surprised
Over 90% of the reviews written by so-called critics have been negative. I never put too much stock into what the H'wood liberals have to say, but still I figured that if the reviews were all this bad then it probably wasn't a very good movie.
Although it's hard to do the book justice due to the amount of vital content that needs to be covered, this movie BY FAR exceeded my expectations. Not only was the production quality not low and the acting not unbelievable, it was actually a really good movie. My wife had never even heard of the book and she loved it.
Basically, the point of this review is to point out how ignorant and politically biased over 90% of the critics in Hollywood are. If they had any shred of honor for their professions then they would have at least given the movie a fair chance. I'd be willing to bet that a large percentage never even saw it, but instead just jumped on the anti-capitalism bandwagon.
The Grey Zone (2001)
Great Story. Terrible Acting/Directing.
If it weren't such great story, i would give rate this movie as a 2. The cast has many great actors (Keitel, Buscemi), but they are overshadowed by the range of terrible popcorn comedy actors (Arquette, Sorvino). The casting overall was terrible. The acting, surprisingly even from the good actors, was mediocre at best. I blame this mostly on the directing as the lines ALL seem to be forced. It is no wonder that this movie went almost straight to DVD. Its just too bad that they had waste such a great story, and disgrace the people who committed such brave acts during one of the most barbaric acts in the history of the world. If you want to learn about a great rebellion that took place in Auschwitz and you don't want to read a book about it, then watch this movie. But just beware that the movie sucks.
Extreme Ops (2002)
Wow! Worst movie of all time!
When I saw this movie a couple years ago, Id never wanted to walk out of a movie so bad in all my life. But the person who drove didn't wanna leave so the rest of us had to sit through it.
By far the worst movie I've ever seen in my entire life.
The story sucked and the acting was even worse. I honestly didn't think that acting could be this bad. The best acting was from Bridget Wilson, and no offense to her because i think she's beautiful, but that is really saying something.
If you have the option of watching this movie or cutting your wrists with a rusty knife and then having someone urinate on your wounds, opt for the latter.
Don't WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!
Cloverfield (2008)
Great Movie...HORRIBLE ENDING
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
It was thrilling, scary, well made, full of pretty good acting. It kept me and everybody in the audience on the edges of our seats (literally) throughout the entire 1 1/2 hours.
What bothered me about this movie and the reason that I gave it 5 stars instead of the 8 or 9 that it could have deserved...I have never seen a worse ending in my entire life. There is absolutely NO closure...It just ends.
I'm not going to say anything specific about the movie because the mystery makes it better and I still believe that it is worth seeing in that it is extremely entertaining, I just think that it doesn't deserve he merit of a great movie because a believe that a movie should have a beginning a middle and an end...call me old fashioned but i don't think that a movie should stop in the middle.
Go see it...you'll be entertained...just don't expect it to make in your top 500 list.
Citizen Kane (1941)
How is this #1
Honestly, the mere fact that this movie is ranked so high by so many people and organizations just proves that behind the greediness of Hollywood lies a smug bunch of people who consider themselves more artsy and intellectual than everyone else in America. Unless they grew up during the great depression, they didn't actually enjoy this movie and the only reason that they move it to the top of their list is because everybody else has and they think that by not having it up there others will see them as being less artistically advanced. This movie may have been great when only 5 movies were being made in Hollywood per year, but since then hundreds of movies have been whose quality far surpasses that of Citizen Kane.
