Red Stone (2021)
7 for Cudlitz and McDonough!
So found this one along and thought it looked like a modern western and it has one of my favorite actors in Michael Cudlitz - Shout out to Gross Point Blank-
McDonough is always fun as a baddie.
POSITIVES; The cinematography was awesome. It was gritty and had a weird red vibe. It was old school with long shots and let the actors act. The sparse action scenes were cool and the f/x were solid and old school. This was definitely a love letter to old gangster films. The acting for the most part was great. Loved the Hutch role. Billy Blare was awesome.
NEGATIVES; It was billed as an action film. An article I saw said it was a western film too. It is not either. There is action in it and it was made in Texas, I think. But it's not a western. It's closer to a dixie mafia type film. Or like Justified without the action.
I didn't like the music. I appreciate what they were doing but it wasn't my favorite.
The film moves slow and that's okay for some people. But I think the way the movie preview made it look, some will think it's more action.
Overall really cool little gangster film. Some gritty moments too.
7/10.
Last Shoot Out (2021)
Not very good.
Okay, I generally don't like to rate films too low but this one missed the mark pretty badly.
I noticed it's the same people behind Catch the Bullet, which I bought with this one not even knowing that.
Not much to say about this film but it's pretty bad. Unfortunate as I'm a sucker for the western genre films, tv and books.
3 OUT 10.
I'll say that maybe they can do better with a better script. Interested to see.
Catch the Bullet (2021)
Generous 4
Generous 4 for effort.
Not the worst film for sure. And I'm a sucker for westerns and I'm watching and reviewing westerns at the moment, but man, this needed a lot of work before it was ready.
Acting was pretty bad and Tom Skerritt deserves so much better.
Story was intriguing enough to keep me watching it but I constantly noticed how low the budget was and it took me out of the film.
Good effort but needed more.
Still, I enjoyed some parts and the scenery was pretty.
Like I stated earlier, not the worst and by far not the best.
THE GOOD - Tom Skerritt in anything. Scenery.
THE BAD - Acting, action scenes and the pacing.
The Last Son (2021)
Good film. Don't believe the haters
My god, reading some of these reviews for this movie makes me so sad.
I've seen bad films and I can say this western does not deserve anything under a 5.
It's an engaging film and as for a western it's dark and thrilling. Reminiscent of Never Grow Old, which was an under-appreciated film for sure.
Good acting and directing.
THE GOOD - Acting and directing and great addition to the western genre
THE BAD - A bit slow and yes, redundant in some aspects.
7 out of 10 .
People that give this films such low reviews and write like immature 4th graders need to try to construct a real opinion and leave it for people who want to know more about a film before renting.
No need for these cruel remarks. Geez.
South of Heaven (2021)
Decently made and intriguing
Decent little movie with some awesome actors. I love Jason Sudekis and I thought it was so good to see him do something different.
It dragged a bit but overall the film was well made and reminded me of some older films.
THE GOOD - Good story and Jason Sudekis
THE BAD - Some of the other actors and the second half seemed to go downhill a bit.
Overall I recommend!
Whitetail (2021)
Better than I thought it could be
I rented this without much hope of it being good.
I was pleasantly surprised to not only be entertained but actually caught myself thinking about the film afterwards.
This is not a horror film. That's the first thing people should know. It's also not an action movie. The scenes are intense and the overall message may be too depressing for people to like but I thought this was exceptionally well made. Definitely not represented the right way through the fact it was in wal-mart and the cover looks like it's a different kind of movie. Why this wasn't in festivals or something is beyond me. My wife and I try to go to the Atlanta Film Festival when we can (we've been three times) and this would have played really well there.
THE GOOD
Very good movie and has some depth I honestly didn't think it would have. Opening scene was great. Complicated move. Music was good. Another scene was a shootout between the characters. It was done with a great deal of reality. Was a sense of dread.
THE BAD - The film may be too slow for American audiences. The scenes are great and the pacing is pretty good but there is a lot of talking and one must be patient to get the pay off. Most people my son's age (20s to 30s) just don't want to watch slower paced films. Not that that is bad but it's just a matter of preference.
The film also has a rather drab ending that I didn't like but I guess understood it was that way for a reason.
Pessimistic message.
Overall I recommend but you need to know what film you're renting or buying before you do it. If you think it's a typical thriller you'll be disappointed. If you want to watch a film that hits you in the gut, then you'll like it.
7 of 10 - mostly because the acting was extremely good and I loved the old school look of it.
