Fast X (2023)
What is this anymore?
I liked the fast and furious movies. I grew up on them and think theyre quite entertaining (sometimes I just wanna watch something not thought provoking). The franchise started out with an innocent feel. But recently I've realised it's just an easy cash grab. Looking back at the older movies there were practical effects/visual effects and everyone seemed to actually care about the "art" (saying that loosely). Nothing was taken too seriously. However it's noticeable that Vin Diesel domination has caused the franchises downfall. Sometimes i feel like i'm watching a movie about Dominic Toretto ft friends. For a movie about family it's weird it's always centered around one member. For a franchise that's gone on as long as this one there should be more character development and a variation of character focused stories. I think the reason I liked the fifth movie is because no one tried to be hero and the characters had their individual reasons. I find more enjoyment in watching characters that are intriguing, who can make mistakes, who can be selfish (flawed characters are realsitic therefore more likeable). I'm not someone who cares for realism but there has to be stakes for the audience to care. There's no sense of imminent danger (literally no one gets any marks from being in car crashes). At the end of movie when there's the bombs on the dam, you just know that's gonna be solved in the first 10 mins of the next movie. The whole plane crash is gonna be cop out. Let's not forget that Giselle is now alive. How many more dead characters are gonna come back now this finale is being dragged out to a 3 parter? Don't get me wrong Giselle was my favourite character along with Han but i didn't mind them being dead because their deaths had weight. I cared about them but now everything feels so fake. Like I loved Jason Statham as a bad guy he was so iconic in the 7th movie, he's a character we will never forget because of his motivations and memorable introduction and now he's just a 'hero' I guess... These movies are somewhow the most predictable yet unpredictable. They never seem to stick to anything. In terms of how the film looks unfortunately that doesn't seem to be where the budget went (i have a hunch all the budget went to getting all these actors). My last critism (this is just me being nit picky) there's too many characters, I can't care about them becuase i barely know them; they're not fleshed out characters, their relationships aren't built up. It was hard to give this movie 2 stars but one star is due to Jason Momoas character. Personally I liked his character. He had his funny moments but even then some jokes felt they were for children (which is fine but given the context of this film its just...very jarring). Additionally, i thought Jacob was interesting in this film. In the last movie i didn't really care for him but this one i thought he was one of the more entertaining characters. The other merit is that at least its was better than F9. In conclusion this franchise ended after the 7th movie.
