Prizzi's Honor (1985)
Fun movie... If you know what you're getting into
Once I had a little context, I enjoyed it.
It's not your typical mob movie. And maybe not typical anything else.
Comes from an author who writes satirical books about abuse of power. Known for The Manchurian Candidate. And this.
So this is a satirical mob movie. But the satire is watered down some in the movie compared to the book, apparently.
Watching it with that lens, knowing some of it is kind of a subtle/wry/dark humor, sort of making fun of the mob with these over the top characters and plot lines... It actually becomes quite funny. And fun.
And Jack Nicholson's character is well done I think. As well as his main love interest.
So if you can handle all of that...
8/10.
Jurassic Park (1993)
First half is great. Downhill from there
Starts strong. The buildup is interesting. Until about the halfway point.
Then it gets pretty cooky / cheesy, lots of weird decisions and behavior from the actors.
I.e. The characters don't seem to really be taking the situation seriously at times. Like when they start fangirling over dinosaur behavior instead of trying a little harder to stay safe...
The special effects are great considering it was 1993. But the second half of the movie seems more played for laughs, and trying to be clever, more than anything else.
I thought it was going to be great, and then it turned out to be so so.
The sequels all have much lower ratings, so I assume they have the same wonkiness and cookiness that plagued the second half of this movie (among other issues, like lack of good source material).
Fat Fiction (2020)
Extremely informative re: history, politics, and $$ involved in the dietary guidelines
I thoroughly enjoyed this film! As a physician assistant working in emergency rooms, I constantly see the devastating effects of diabetes and obesity. It has becomes increasingly obviously over the years that the prescription for patients with high blood sugar (and high insulin, of course) should not be more carbs in their food, but less.
This film does an excellent job of walking us through the history of how the "low fat diet" became part of the dietary guidelines, how it gradually became more entrenched, and why it's difficult for anything to change despite a growing body of evidence that these guidelines are harmful.
The filmmakers did a good job of weaving together info about history with modern-day illustrations of the difference between low fat and low carb diets. They also did a good job of explaining the physiology behind what they were talking about.
I would strongly recommend this film to anyone who values their own health!
