Scrambled (2023)
Rotten eggs
The SINK. The modern feminist single income no kids story, of a woman who never grew up and in the end never does. There's a few laughs in the beginning but in the end you see she's selfish, entitled, schemed money out of her family, meddled in the life's of exes and others, and took it all as a part of her journey. The movie offers no moral championing for overcoming obstacles or becoming a better person, or even making an opportunity to make it into a good joke. Instead they make an entire drawn out 30 minutes of the main character feeling sorry for herself for all the bad decisions she made.
Dream Scenario (2023)
Disaster scenario
I went to sleep and woke up in a nightmare, where I'm told who and what I am to people I've never met, to circumstances out of my control. Does this sound familiar to you? It might, we see it on a regular basis when we plug into modern media. Media that celebrates celebrity and condemns simplicity. Paul Mathews is not a simple man, nor is his life with a wife and three daughters, while also maintaining a tenured professor position. He seemingly does everything a family man should do, he's loyal, hardworking, has a nice home, a healthy family, and supports his children. He's achieved most people's idea of the American Dream, except he's living in a modern nightmare. In the kafka-esque way of metamorphosis his life funnily changes overnight, and then it's not funny anymore. The cycle of celebrity is complete, acceptance and rejection. Shame can be an incredible motivator for the zeitgeist, it changes the public view in seconds, to the point we deny everyday people basic rights. The Hunt and Beau Is Afraid similarly touch on the same subject of downward spirals. 8/10 will make you uncomfortable, as it should.
