Best in Show (2000)
The cleverest comedy in existence
I'm no dog lover but this film which follows several people's preparations for a major dog show is easily the cleverest comedy I have ever seen. It's a spoof documentary and it comes from the team of Spinal Tap but this is quite honestly far superior thanks mainly to supreme acting from all involved. If you don't like dogs then it'll be hard to convince you to watch this even though the subject matter is practically irrelevant but if you consider yourself a fan of comedies then you MUST watch this film. Everything about the film is superb - each scene is priceless - but the commentators at the dog show just about steal it with the funniest banter you are ever likely to hear. Please try this film - it's simply awesome.
The Groove Tube (1974)
An unbelievably bad 'film'
Oh dear. While Chevy Chase and the gang at SNL set new highs with the sketch show format this fails miserably at every level. Fortunately Chevy is barely in this at all and can't be blamed for this utter tripe. It seriously is very, very bad. While meant to be a political comment on USA at the time of it's release (1974) it still remains neither funny or acutely observed. The sketches are all way too long and any satirical impact they may have had is lost as they're all drawn out to the point of complete boredom. This is credited as Chevy's movie debut and I'm pleased to say that everything he did after this bettered it. Avoid even if curious.
Fletch (1985)
The greatest comedy movie of all time
Jesus H. Christ on a popsicle stick! How this movie can only be averaging 6-7 out of 10 is beyond all reasonable comprehension. Chevy Chase found the character he was born to play and a comedy storyline like no other before or after. This is simply a lesson to all others in comedy. The one-liners are of a genius and quantity unseen in any film EVER and carried off in superb style by Chevy. Perhaps Chevy just plays it too well and people don't even hear half of his comments let alone understand them. Just watch this movie again (with subtitles if it helps) and then tell me there's a cleverer film in existence.
