L'atelier (2017)
Realist anti-thriller
I think this film is trying to to make a contrast between slick, unreal thrillers and reality. I get a sense of the storyline at the end being improvised so that I never knew what might happen. I was impressed but it wasn't my normal type of film, hence a 7 but could have been 8.
Although I did like the scenes of the main character swimming, I don't know that they were necessary. The other students in the workshop could have been more involved, instead they acted like they were bored, there were possibilities missed for conflict that could have deepened the plot. Overall, I liked the film, it was a view into French life that you don't often see.
Soul (2020)
Innovative and quirky
A wonderful film full of great performances. Good to see some UK and Irish voices. Could have made more about jazz and composition but maybe they thought they had stretched the focus enough.
Belfast (2021)
Worth watching
Belfast film 2022
19/2/22 Dundonald Odeon 6pm
I must admit watching 'Belfast' in Belfast was a poignant experience. I don't know if you can approve or disapprove of a film that is biographical perhaps I was expecting a bit more action considering the level of hurt and bitterness that still continues in Belfast.
Belfast is a city that is hard to understand, full of hard men and women, hard gritty people full of love and a sense of humour.
The characters are well portrayed, some excellent acting especially Granny and Pop, (Judi Dench and Ciaran Hinds).
Purposively, if a bit disappointedly, he fails to grasp the political background of Belfast showing it as a war of religion rather than culture.
The weak points of the film are where general culture breaks in - popular TV and film shows that are in colour in contrast to the black and white film. Actually, if I remember correctly in Belfast colour TV's where a rare luxury even watching snooker in black and white was a big thing in Belfast.
Overall, a good film worth a watch, I have given it 6 but it could be 6.5.
Yes, it seems in Belfast we are at another pivotal point in history. London is ignoring us and our own politicians are stuck in the past. We want a decent health service and good jobs. We also need to do more politically and demand more.
This Is Going to Hurt (2022)
Worth watching
If you want to know what is happening in the NHS, I think this show is worth a watch. Certainly not what I would call a typical medical drama. Probably not comparable to MASH.
The Sessions (2012)
Life affirming
At first glance this film based on a true story of a paraplegic man seeking his first sexual experience may not seem appealing. I would urge you to give it a chance, yes it covers adult themes, but it will change your life. It will make you appreciate all that you have.
First rate performances from John Hawkes (Mark O'Brien) especially in making his character avoid self-pity, Helen Hunt (Cheryl), I would also endorse William H. Macy(Father Brendan). Definitely not the stereotypical representation of a Roman Catholic priest. Given that this is based on a true story I think this is one of the best portrayals of religious characters I have seen on film.
It will leave you thinking about the characters, their lives and this is a sign of a good film. A great contribution to disability rights.
If there is one negative it might be that a lot of the characters are 'nice' and I would have expected a lot more negativity or hostility to his plans. There was one carer who was fired at the start, this might have been a good opportunity to show how many problems disabled people face. Otherwise a great film!
Wilson (2017)
Appealing performances but simple sometimes baffling plot
I really enjoyed watching Wilson, it is perhaps a bit simplistic and this is probably because it was a graphic novel.
There is a part in the prison where Wilson pokes fun at the preacher and gets beaten up - why? Are the nazi thugs protecting the preacher? Then he becomes best friends with the thugs and I still don't understand why.
The character is well acted but I don't know anything about him. He is well intentioned but I think maybe too naive to be realistic. Still enjoyed watching it.
The Drop (2014)
Great plot line, some confusing twists
This is a great movie, not your usual crime film but some really deep and dark plot twists.
At the start of the film when he finds the dog- why is he being watched? I expected more but the relevance didn't appear.
Also when Detective Torres first meets Bob he says 'I never see you at communion'. This confused me because Roman Catholic s always refer to it as Mass.
