Better Call Saul (2015)
Sauls story is nice, but the side stories are what kept me watching
I was hesitant to start the series for fear that I would miss Walter White. As a fan of Breaking Bad, I feared that Better caul Saul would just be a cheap knock-off. But luckily this is definitely not the case.
The series has a cool 80s look and feel. The costumes, cars, and so on convey a coherent overall package. Everything seems very authentic.
Storywise, it is interesting to learn background information about Jimmy's career. His development from a small-time crook to a shady lawyer is quite exciting. However, the plot seemed tough and predictable at times. Many scenes follow a similar pattern and increasingly lost their appeal for me. The drama surrounding Jimmy's brother also seemed staged and tedious in places. The main story is good but by no means excellent. A far cry from a Breaking bad.
Disclaimer: I hate the character Jimmy Mc Gill and his decisions. He's supposed to seem sympathetic, but I can't stand him. Jimmy is a clown who makes one stupid decision after another and hurts everyone around him. He is a an absolute jerk.
On the other hand, I found the side stories surrounding the drug cartel extremely exciting. The different characters, some of whom I already knew from Breaking Bad, are excitingly written. I even found some of the people around the cartel much more interesting than Jimmy. This even goes so far that I wished in places that the side story would get even more playing time. Which is nothing that I can say about the main story.
Overall I liked the series. But it is unlikely that I am going to watch it again.
Euphoria (2019)
Honest college drama with an artistic touch
The series covers many different topics:
- mental health
- sexual violence
- transexuality
- education
- drugs
The series puts its finger in the wound and deals with the above topics with exceptional depth and honesty. In the process, the boundaries between good and evil - between victim and perpetrator - become blurred. This series shows grievances, prejudices and uncomfortable truths and gives food for thought without condemning. This leaves room for one's own thoughts and discussions.
All this happens in a very artistic way. The camera work is unique and has some great shots. Especially the interplay of light and soundtrack makes for extremely atmospheric scenes. The artist Labyrinth was a great choice overall.
When it comes to the plot, you can tell that this is a blockbuster from HBO. There are comparatively many characters with individual storylines, each of which tells its own story. Although the individual storylines differ greatly, the creators manage to ensure that the series never loses its focus.
Overall, a great drama with a rolling look.
Das Privileg (2022)
Illogical demon story
The film starts promisingly. It stars some interesting newcomers who are already known from the successful German series Dark. The look of individual scenes is also good and reminds me of a mixture of Stranger things and dark.
However, the story starts to lose its thread after a few minutes. Thus, the story loses itself in a crude mixture of horror, black magic and some splatter. But nothing of it really seriously works. As a viewer, I did not experience any creepy feelings or scared at any point.
For my taste, there were clearly too many logic errors and implausible decisions by the characters. One happy coincidence follows the next.
Overall, the series seems conceptless and lovelessly designed. The best thing is the cast, even if all actors remain below their potential.
