The Sinner: Part VI (2020)
Not a spoiler, a warning
As the season progressed, what I increasingly feared would happen eventually did. What the hell? How galactically dumb. Ambrose and the show Olympic-vaulted the magalodon. Nothing that follows can be taken seriously.
We're now at least three episodes past when Ambrose should have followed the simplest path and taken care of an increasingly unstable (and so so so guilty) Jamie. And not just Ambrose, but basically anyone anywhere in Jamie's orbit
The first two seasons were quality low burn detective procedural TV. This third one has been stretched and diluted into pablum. I want all my six hours back.
Tulsa King (2022)
It's so dated it makes me feel young
It's not that it doesn't have its moments, or that it's no fun watching Sly in a tailor-made setting, it's that everything about it feels so so passé.
The sensibilities, the setup, the humor, the standards of plausibility, the signifiers of manliness. It all feels stuck at Tango & Cash or Daylight.
The series does have its moments and some of the humor does land. But how people react to Dwight's anachronisms feels like sad pandering to folks who wish the good ol days hadn't evolved. Are people really that easily intimidated? That and there's not a single tired trope left unused. With a little less kowtowing to the star, it could have been terrific.
Capitani (2019)
100% of all the clichés used
Just watched season 2. Imagine a deck of cards with a cliché on each one. Every single card was played. I'm not complaining; I'm impressed. It actually was rather entertaining.
Les 7 vies de Léa (2022)
It's a fun ride that works
Like the adolescents at its center, the series is a bit all over the place. But if you indulge, it totally works. Bonus for the France based 90s références, which surprise and delight - even if buttered a little thick.
The cast is engaging, the story moves along and there's some cool ideas explored here and there. Worth it!
David Spade: Nothing Personal (2022)
On par with a business dinner with a personable salesman
This whole set reminded me of the rehearsed stories and banter of old school software salesmen after a few drinks. It's entertaining from these guys, but I expect more from a filmed special.
At least on Netflix you can pause or bail out at will.
Resident Alien: Girls' Night (2022)
What's going on here?
This otherwise very enjoyable show's greatest flaw is its tendency to be all over the place. Like Harry, it's not confident about its true self and half-ass tries all sorts of strands.
This episode, admittedly below average, dipped its unfocused toe into the pool of girl power. And now the internet goes kablooey. Oversensitve much, folks?
