Dune: Part Two (2024)
I knew the story
I have read all the books. I love them. And I love the Lynch Dune. That's why I knew what was going on storywise. Dune: Part 2 is a great movie. Good acting, great battles, etc. But if you don't know the books, I'm afraid you will be a little confused. It was like the director had been so busy with making the movie visually great and forgot about the plot.
I gave it a nine, of course. I would have given it 10 if there had been more charisma/connection between the main characters. Stilgar had lost his dignity and was just a religious zealot. Paul and Chani, well, I couldn't see the love. And why was Jessica and Paul always so angry at each other?
So... yes it's a great movie. Of course the plot was there. But it was hard to see if you didn't know it from the books or the first Dune. I could see Paul struggling with his way to the future. But his vision was confusing. It was more tell, not show. I think a lot of people would find it confusing why he drank the water of life too. They never talk much about it. His marriage to Irulan was never a secret for Chani. She knew the cost of power and accepted it. But I guess that will be clear in the third movie.
I really enjoyed the film. But I had inside information so it was easy. If you have not, you might not get it all. And that's a shame because it's important, especially in todays political landscape.
Loki (2021)
Not a puny god!!
Give the writers free reign to make a story and you might get a perfect one. And give an actor the right character and you will get the perfect god of mischief. Tom Hiddleston IS a god. And not a puny god, but up there with the best and more. Odin? Pffft... nothing special about him. Zevs? Who needs him... we have Loki.
Season 1 was good. Loki and Mobius had lots of chemistry. Loki was terrific, charming and just superb. The rest of the cast was great too. Sylvie, the other god of mischief was a wonderful Loki. The sets, the CGI, the camerawork and everything from the production side were spot on.
Season 2 was worth waiting for. Tom Hiddleston gave us less mischief but even more character growth. All the pain from millennia of suffering, self doubt and selfish wants turned Loki into a real god. He got friends that understood him without judging. And everything was shown through Tom's eyes, face and body language. He is such a great actor. And so is Owen Wilson. And the guy who played Orobourus! What a charming add on to the wonderful cast.
We can't forget the music! Natalie Holt made a fantastic soundtrack. It made a good show even better. And it's worth listening to outside of the tv show.
The episode from Chicago was the slowest one. But the other five episodes was so busy that they needed full attention. And the ending was perfection. The god got his throne and glorious purpose. All is well in the multiworld.
Thanks Marvel for this gift :)
Meg 2: The Trench (2023)
Not Asylum?
I like Asylum movies. They are over the top fun. The Meg2 reminded me of Asylums shark movies, but didn't quite reach their level of mindless fun. I also like Jason Statham. And Statham and Asylum should have been a match made in heaven, but no. Nothing could save Meg2. I gave it a 4 just for Jason. He deserved at least 4 for trying to give this movie something to lighten up the incredible feeling of utter boredom.
The plot was boring. Or.... was it a plot at all? The action... boring. Most of the characters... boring. The sharks... boring. Maybe it had something to do with believeability. I hope that's a word. Because that's what this movie lacked. It was impossible to get immersed in this mess.
All the death! Lots of dead people. But no blood and no mourning. It was like the slaughter never happened. Or maybe our heroes just had very bad memory? Yes. That's it. When their friends died, they were blessed with memoryloss.
But thank the gods! The dog was saved!!
Now I guess I'm in spoiler territory....
Leave the World Behind (2023)
A seven for the actors
It started well. Julia was great as an angry, rude woman. Ethan Hawke was... Ethan Hawke? The father/ daughter team was great too. And I liked Rose.
An apocalyptic feeling came sneaking up, but was it supernatural? Or was it a bunch of terrorist countries getting their revenge on USA? Or maybe mother Earth getting back at us because we are jerks? Who knows?
Lots of deer was running around seemingly with an important message. Flamingos was swimming in the pool. Why? Mr. G. H. Knew powerful men who may or may not rule the world. Was they behind teeth falling out, sounds that shatters windows and Tesla coming to an end? Who knows....
And in the end we knew that we learned nothing. Only Friends matter. I made a pun lol!
Thor: God of Thunder (2022)
Asylum of course.
I like Asylum movies.... some of their mockbusters are enjoyable. And sometimes they make really good stuff, like Z-Nation.
I liked Thor: God of Thunder. They managed to tell a lot about norse mythology, so that was a good thing. It's not a good movie, but watchable. Thor was nice and not the worst actor, really. But there was a bit too much of the "emotional" scenes where he cried out his dispair. Myrom Kingery, you did a good job.
The rest of the cast was very uneven. It was fun to see how they waited for their chance to act... to say their lines. It was kind of a lesson in how not to do it. Sometimes it was a bit cringe and Loki was terrible. But I guess I'm spoiled by the "real" Loki, Tom Hiddleston. The hair was good, though. And I can understand his anger when his guards in the dungeon was eating all his olives. I would call on my friend, Fenrir for revenge too.
Vaune Suitt, as dr. Grace Choi was sometimes ok, sometimes... not. But again, the hair was great. There is no need to talk about the other actors. Well, maybe Odin, Vernon Wells. I don't remember his hair, but the eye was very Odin-ish. And sometimes he did some good acting. I think maybe the cheesy conversations made it hard to do a better job.
Lokis staff was looking like it was made by a fourth grader, the eartquakes was obviously shaky camera and Thor, pretending to sit in a viking ship using a tiny paddle thingy was out of this world!
But the tsunami was not bad. At least not as bad as Fenrir who was looking like he had escaped from a cartoon.
All in all, not a bad Asylum movie. The first part was fine, actually. The rest was fun. Like bad movie fun. If you like bad movies that make you smile, this one is for you.
Harry & Meghan (2022)
Harry and Meghan tell their side of the story.
A beautiful love story that angered royal instituition workers, newspaper people and racists. I didn't find the documentary whining at all. The low ratings people on the other hand, are the real whiners.
Media and the royal household have told their stories about the "terrible" american actress who stole the british prince. I expected to see a demon like person, but found an intelligent, charming woman, clearly in love with her prince.
And now they are telling their side of the story. It is done with grace and lots of love, to each other, to their children, to their supporting parents and to their friends.
So... they are getting paid? Big deal. You whiners think that only Netflix should get all the money?
Redemption (2022)
Irish crime drama.
Great acting, suspenseful and dramatic. Colette, an experienced detective, is taking care of her grandchildren after their mother's suicide. At the same time she is investigating said death because she doesn't believe her daughter took her own life. There are a few plotholes and a couple of weird actions, but it can be ignored because of the great actors and the quality of the show. This is my first irish police show and I really, really enjoyed it. It was different from the British shows and it had some "The Bridge" vibe.
