Great Expectations (2023)
So disappointing
Given the writing plus casting, production and directing credits, I had been really looking forward to this latest production. But it was so disappointing. I have no issues about any of the casting, but take great issue with this version being termed an 'adaptation' when really it's a very significant 'reworking'. My biggest disappointment, though, is that all the glorious subtlety and build-up in Dickens' thrilling story has been lost. The humour too. The last BBC adaptation (with Ray Winstone) was excellent, despite that too missing some characters, etc., but I feel that there's still room for somebody to create the ultimate adaptation that faithfully picks up these points and does justice to all characters and storyline in the original book. I won't be watching this version again, though.
Flag Day (2021)
Engrossing drama - Well worth watching...
A really engrossing drama. Well worth watching, although I nearly didn't bother due to the poor user reviews, but succumbed to the £0.99 Amazon Prime deal! Glad I did, as it turned out to be a very good film!! Good story and acting, plus soundtrack. Puzzled by the low ratings, but each to their own I suppose. If you like Sean Penn's film 'Into the Wild' then you'll probably like the style and vibe of this. Much better than the current IMDB rating would suggest. Give it a go, you might be surprised too!
The Last Bus (2021)
Enjoyable, albeit locationally flawed, film.
A bit clinched, maybe, but nice story and an enjoyable film overall, with great acting from TS. Maybe most viewers won't realise or care, but (as a local) why not actually film the end at the real Land's End?! Sennen Cove would have been a beautiful location for the ending harbours scenes!! Nonetheless, it's worth watching.
