Oppenheimer (I) (2023)
10/10
Perfectly disgusting.

Perfect rendition of how mankind is fatally flawed. Makes me sad to be human. I hate war on the street, the state, the country, across continents and the world. Nobody 'wins' unless you're profiting from manufacturing and selling weapons. Profiting from war/hate/conflict - it's disgusting.

Artistically this story is a triumph. My children, now in there 20's, had no concept of nuclear weapons or nuclear war. And I preferred it that way, but this was a wake-up call to them. Fantastic performances from the entire cast. Epic story as ever from Christopher Nolan. Incredible detail. Perfect performance of a disgusting reality.

Alien (1979)

50 years ahead of its time - total classic
15 September 2021
This is going to sound extreme. But I see the pyramids of Egypt and wonder how a primitive society achieved such a feat. If Alien (1979) was releases in 2021, It would still be a feat of design, suspense and sci-fi genius. Absolute classic, absolutely years ahead of its time.

The Orphanage (2007)

I loved everything about this film… except the split-second subtitles!
27 March 2008
I loved everything about this film - the cinematography was beautiful, the casting was perfect, Belén Rueda's (Laura) was fantastic and it was a just a great story. Half way through the penultimate scene I still couldn't predicted the conclusion. Too many times, in big budget Hollywood movies, I've got the whole thing wrapped up in the first 30mins but not in the Orphanage.

A friend warned me… 'it's not a horror.' He was right it's a dark, captivating thriller, a classic and a must see.

P.S. If you can't speak Spanish, be prepared for half a screen full of subtitles that give you a split second to read them. I dropped my rating a star for this.

Works in theory but not in practice.
3 May 2007
If you described any of the scenes; nightmares of children murdering you in your sleep, your infant daughter talking to ghosts, searching for your lost child in an abandoned mine at night, so petrified with fear that you can't move even though the blood from a murder victim is dripping onto you from the floor above – then I'd say you had a horror movie. But some how 'Wicked Little Things' just wasn't scary. I am a horror fan and I loved the location, the plot in principal and I liked the three leading ladies. I didn't want to see them come to harm, I wanted the 'bad guy' to get his just desserts, the rest of the cast are always simply cannon fodder so I was indifferent either way with them and it played out every cliché in the book - even down to the torch battery running out in the pitch dark just as you start to here whispering voices closing in on you.

I would still recommend that you watch it, but unless you are new to horror movies or under 12 years, you will have seen it all before.

Unrest (I) (2006)
8/10
Four medical students discover that not all spirits want to rest in peace.
19 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
As part of their training, four medical students perform an autopsy on an unknown cadaver only to discover that the human spirit lives until the body is laid to rest – but not all spirits want to rest in peace. This movie really got me. I would trade multi-million dollar production, A-list actors and state of the art cgi for a good old-fashioned creepy 'who goes next' horror any day. I've normally got the plot, the killer and the motive wrapped up by the second chapter but Unrest kept me guessing right to the end. And on this occasion I didn't want to see any of the characters get topped (killed) either. I hate hospitals and surgery, so throw in a few empty corridors, flickering lights and an unwelcome presence and I'm out of there. I have read other reviews and some mention the 'hype' surrounding the horror fest - I haven't seen any of this and that's the way I prefer it.

Did Corri (Alison Blanchard) look like Britney Spears's 'separated at birth' sister? P.S. I checked the **Spoiler** box because I didn't want to get black listed, but I how far is too far on a plot give away?
