Daisy Jones & The Six (2023)
As Close to Perfection as Any Series I've Seen
I savored every minute of this series. All the elements worked: the acting, the story line, the production value, the wardrobe, and most of all the music.
I was blown away by Riley Keogh's talent and beauty. It gives pause to contemplate how substance abuse has impacted her real life, given the loss of her grandfather and now her mother. The styles of the clothing and hair were spot-on for the 70's. I personally traveled the country in a rock band in the early 70's in a Greyhound bus, and I felt the passion that guided this story could only come from people who had been there, and actors who can appreciate it as if they were living it themselves. Their on-screen aging was convincing.
The music. Oh, the music. Songs as good as anything on the charts. This was a heartfelt collaboration of joy. I didn't want it to end.
May December (2023)
The only exposé I've seen where the researcher is more perverse than their subject
With the stellar cast, I expected a decent movie.
This is nothing more than exploitation porn, feeding on the corpse of a true story. The actor researching her role crawls into the skin of the woman she is to portray, and ends up being more perverse than the woman she is trying to expose. She seduces the husband in order to "free" him from past, which doesn't free him at all. It only robs him of his sweet innocence and piles on more abuse. "It's what adults do" is her amoral explanation, devoid of any resemblance to sanity. No, adults do NOT do that, thank you. At least I enjoyed the performances of the two stars.
The Humans (2021)
Failed to make these actors Human
The impoverished setting did not add humanness to these characters. Watching Amy Schumer grunt and flatulate from colitis, while mourning her gay ex-lover did not remotely make her more human. It merely checked the box for the topics required to get movie funding these days. Nor did these jewish actors gifting a virgin mary statue for good luck grant them religious virtue. There was no redeeming human warmth or wisdom. It teased about becoming a sci-fi haunted house story, but that also fizzled out. The plot was formulaic and went nowhere.
On a side note, I want one of those projector fireplaces!
Her Smell (2018)
Actors who wannabe rock stars
A movie about a rock star needs MUSIC worthy of BEING a rock star. Doing drugs and being depraved DOES NOT EQUAL TALENT.
So many actors these days seem like they couldn't make it as musicians so they settle for faking the outward appearance of being a musician.
It doesn't work that way.
Joe vs Carole (2022)
Why?
I hoped this series would continue where Tiger King left off, to update us on the saga that is Joe and Carole and the subsequent legal issues, etc. But it is merely a retelling of the story, this time without the real people, or the real tigers, which were the essence of the original. Why bother?
Instead of portraying a real Carole Baskin, who might be capable of turning her husband into tiger kibble, this version is for Baskin apologists. She is too cheap to pay her employees, but we are expected to nod in sympathetic agreement at her ridiculous excuse that it's to prevent "mercenaries" from infiltrating her organization (face palm). I would rather go back and re-watch the original.
