The Class of '92 (2013)
Entertaining and interesting
Football documentary following the fortunes of six Manchester United players and how they became legends at the club.
I'm not a Manchester United fan but this is an enjoyable and well put together film that shows the camaraderie and passion these young men had as they became global names within the game.
There is a lack of footage at times and I would have preferred to know more like when Beckham left for Real Madrid and the dynamics within the dressing with new players arriving but the six players come across well and have some entertaining and interesting anecdotes especially about "that night in Barcelona".
The inclusion of Clive Tyldesley adding commentary to a few clips wasn't necessary and neither is Tony Blair's input but Danny Boyle and Mani give good accounts.
Re-Animator (1985)
Brilliant tongue-in-cheek horror
Weird Doctor does weird experiments in Switzerland, comes to America, teams up and moves in with colleague, experiments in the basement, re-animates dead things!
Brilliant tongue-in-cheek horror which has stood the test of time well as it camps up an HP Lovecraft story with over-the-top gore, cheesy dialogue and gratuitous nudity.
Obviously it's quite dated in some aspects but the SFX are well done although the cat scene amuses more than scares and Jeffrey Combs steals the screen with his creepy and insane Herbert West.
The music isn't bad but sounds remarkably like Psycho is some parts.
Goal! (2005)
By-the-numbers football rags-to-riches film
Mexican family immigrates to the US, young man is a decent footballer, Father wants him to help with business, scout sees young man play, gets trial in England, conflict.
By-the-numbers football rags-to-riches film which you could have written within 10 minutes before watching.
The cast aren't bad (Marcel Iures the standout) although some of the Geordie accents are a bit over the top but the cultural comparisons make for amusing viewing.
The cinematography is slick, building the tension up of a match day, some amicable cameos and backed up by a great Oasis heavy soundtrack.
Killing Them Softly (2012)
Very watchable crime drama
Man gets goons to hold-up Mob card game, people refuse to play anymore, Mob losing money, Mob get hit-man to sort out problems.
Very watchable crime drama which although not too much happens draws you in with its strong dialogue, cast and cinematography.
An excellent cast here with Ben Mendelsohn's drug-fuelled Russell showing just what a great actor he is (loved him in Animal Kingdom as well) and a brief but very memorable turn by the late, great James Gandolfini.
It's very stylish, the set-pieces are excellent but also uncomfortable to watch and a great soundtrack to go with it.
Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter (1974)
Entertaining Hammer Cheese-Fest
Women in village ageing prematurely, evil at work, call in Captain Kronos, mayhem.
Hammer cheese-fest which despite the silliness is entertaining and has its creepy moments.
Horst Jansen is the striking Captain Kronos and looks and plays the part well with good support from the Dr.Watson-esque John Cater as Grost and, although Caroline Munro looks fantastic, the less said her about her acting the better.
The sets are well made as you'd expect from Hammer, the sfx aren't bad either for its time and a memorable swashbuckling sword fight at the finale.
Rare Exports (2010)
Fantastic dark fairy tale from Finland
Lapland, Archaeologists unearth man buried deep in mountain, locals not happy, reindeer all slaughtered, children go missing, locals go to sort it out.
Fantastic dark fairy tale from Finland which is based on a short film of the same thing earlier made by the Director.
You're never really sure how it's going to pan out until the end and it looks absolutely beautiful with the Northern Finnish landscapes and humble towns plus it has an excellent score as well.
Although it has a comedic element about it there's always a dark undercurrent which keeps your interest and the acting is of a good standard too.
The Driller Killer (1979)
Really hasn't stood the test of time
Artist and house-mates struggle to make ends meet, band move in downstairs, tensions running high, nonsense.
Video nasty from the late Seventies which really hasn't stood the test of time with most of the cast becoming annoying very quickly and it just sort of goes round in circles.
Some of the film seems to be mostly a promotional vehicle for the band with a man losing his mind tacked on to the side and even when it does reach its crescendo it's disappointing.
You could say it influenced later works like American Psycho but all in all it's quite a hard and unrewarding watch.
Hardware (1990)
Inventive, gory, crass and yet slightly silly
Post-Apocalyptic times, soldier finds robot head in wastelands, brings it back for his artist girlfriend, she repaints it, robot rebuilds itself, chaos.
Inventive, gory, crass and yet slightly silly early 90s sci-fi romp based on a comic book story which also has passing nods towards The Terminator and Aliens. It's a relatively small cast but played out competently enough and the scene is set well with a bunch of people making the best of things in hard times. The sfx are a mixed bag though with the gore being excellent and very graphic however the robot itself does look a little silly especially towards the end of the film and not as menacing as was intended.
