The show centers around Jimmy who becomes a single parent after a one-night stand with a serial killer who ends up on Death Row, trust me when I tell the show becomes drastically less interesting after the first episode. My biggest complaint against this show is Lucas Neff he is clearly unexperienced, rarely funny and PAINFULLY boring at times. They should have chosen a lead with more experience and a far stronger comedic background.
Coming off My Name Is Earl I expected so much more from this show but it's mainly a retread with worse writing and FAR less interesting characters. Jimmy is the biggest offender here the writers desperately want you to like him but none of it feels natural or well written. He's honestly just a bland generic slacker with a unrealistic moral compass, their is so little to his character outside of being a father. It's crazy that they tried centered the story around him, Earl is a interesting character before and after the list while Jimmy is boring with Hope and COMPLETELY irrelevant without her. The introduction of Sabrina in later season helps as it takes the focus off Jimmy while the rest of the cast did a good job but the comedic magic and charm from My Name Is Earl is missing, Natesville simply fails to match the wild crazy comedic synergy of the Camden Community.
Early on the comedy is inconsistent and spastic their is literally a episode centered around Jimmy's father trying to get more hugs from him. Their are numerous times were this feels like a straight up Disney or Nickelodeon show in the worst way possible, it takes awhile for this show to find it's footing comedically. The later season wisely shift the focus to Martha Plimpton (Virginia) the only consistently funny actor in the main cast and incorporate more reoccurring characters from My Name Is Earl while minimizing Jimmy's character and this vastly improves the show imo.
This show still retains the positivity and sense of community present in My Name Is Earl, their are a lot of heartfelt moments and messages here but as a whole all them simply aren't presented in a entertaining package definitely worth a watch with lowered expectations.
