Orphan Horse (2018)
Predictable and cheesy.
Terrible movie with only one good point - a beautiful horse. It must have been embarrassed to have to appear with such horrible acting by everyone and such a weak storyline. Can't imagine money being spent to make this. From the first 20 minutes you could tell every move that would happen.
The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
A Great Chance for a 2 hour nap...
Let me start by saying, as we all know, that everyone has opinions. I have read all the rave reviews of this movie and I just don't get it. I love movies and was really looking forward to this one, having never seen the stage production. I have seen the Lon Chaney version of the film.
Folks, I just don't understand what is so mesmerizing about the whole 'Phantom' thing, but this movie...how unbelievably boring. I fell asleep To start, there was no one in the cast that I recognized except Miranda Richardson (whom I love). A cast of unknowns. A cast of unknowns who can't act or sing. Maybe the film would have been better had there been acting in it. Everything was over-dramatized for the inaneness of the whole plot. The story line was so ridiculous... 'Angel of Music'?? Theonly reason I gave it a '2' is because Emmy Rossum is very visually appealing. Gerard Butler certainly isn't very handsome and definitely doesn't have a stage presence...
I won't be running out to buy this one....
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
How Sad!
I'm sorry...there is only one word to describe this picture - Godawful! I was so disappointed....I had so looked forward to it thinking that there is no way that Sean Connery could be in a bad movie. I was wrong. The scenes are all filmed at such a high speed that most of the time you can't see what is happening. The characters are TOTALLY unbelievable. Tom Sawyer driving a car, Mina Harker is a vampire, etc., etc. Save yourself some money and time and see something that is worth it! This movie truly has no redeeming value! The scenes are too dark, the special effects too outlandish.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
Just because it is foreign...
Sorry, folks..this movie plain stunk. I think a lot of stuffed shirts like anything that is foreign because most Americans want to feel cultured.. I didn't make it through 30 minutes of this movie before I turned it off...
Memento (2000)
No spoilers here!
Well, there will be no spoilers because I have yet to see anything to comment on... I bought this DVD because a friend told me what a great movie it was. I think I need to trade in a friend. Here goes; Absolute garbage and a huge waste of 113 minutes of my life. Guy Pierce as Leonard displays the acting ability that I have seen at my 8 year old's school plays. Carrie-Anne Moss comes off with her usual BLAH character. I hated the way that the continuity was constantly changing. The only good thing I can say about this movie is that Joe Pantoliano always shines. Other words used to describe it: dull, depressing, bleak, non-plussing. My husband and I looked at each other after the movie was over and basically said nothing. Could have found much more enjoyable ways to spend that wasted period of my life even if it was scrubbing floors. If you are looking for a movie with a good story line - pass this one up!
A Knight's Tale (2001)
A definite hoot!
From the very beginning you realize that this is not going to be a movie from which you will learn history. Beginning with spectators at a tournament rocking to Queen's "We Will Rock You" this movie becomes a comedy that is perfect for Saturday evening viewing with the kids. In fact ours really enjoyed it!
Bring your light heart and your best laugh because this movie is peppered with bits of modern time thrown into the 14th century and the mix makes for wonderful film frolicks. This is a combination of The 3 Stooges and medieval times and if you like those two this one is definitely for you.
I truly loved this movie and hope that you will too!
Merlin (1998)
Totally Upbeat
This movie stands out as one of my alltime favorites. Every once in awhile I have to pull out the video and watch it again because it is so entertaining and just takes me totally away from everything. Sam Neill does such a wonderful depiction of Merlin and Helena Bonham Carter plays a great Morgan La Fey. Miranda Richardson just bowles me over with her performance and ability. This movie also gives us a new view of Martin Short and his acting ability; he absolutely shines! If you like fantasy, the legend of Merlin and lots of special effects - don't miss this one. I give it a 9 out of 10!
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Awe-Stricken
This is by far the best movie I have seen in a long time. From the moment it starts you are enthralled in the storyline. I don't want to add any spoilers so I will just say that this is a must-see. Never having seen Russell Crowe in anything before I am now a fan. He definitely has awards coming his way for this one and I also thought that Ed Harris did a wonderful job.
Great movie!
Immortal Beloved (1994)
What a wonderfully spent 2 hours!
Gary Oldman once again shows us his expertise in acting, accents and the ability to transform himself with a breathtaking performance. Through him we got to see the tortured and lonely life of a brilliant man. We also glimpse the fine line between genius and madness. Realizing that there is a lot of romanticism and fiction added on top of the facts of Beethoven's life, the story is mesmerizing. The movie seemed to flow and carry you with it. The only parts that fell flat for me were the choices of actresses to play the women in Beethoven's life. None of them particularly attractive or talented in my opinion. Least of all, Isabella Rossellini whose abilities always leave me disappointed...
Overall this was a great film that I am certain I will see again and again. It is timeless!
Unbreakable (2000)
A REAL Snoozer!
I was so disappointed in this movie! My family slept through it...the only words I can use to describe it are unendingly boring, unbearably drab. My first impression was that I certainly wanted to know where all these people lived because I NEVER wanted to move to this town. I don't recall seeing anyone smile throughout the whole movie. The setting was drab, the storyline dragged, Bruce Willis probably didn't have to do much acting because there was nothing to act with. It took me a long while to understand why Samuel Jackson's character was hanging around. The plot of the movie really wasn't developed very well at all. Feeble attempts at revealing Bruce Willis' character's abilities. It was a generally depressing movie. I was looking for something along the lines of Sixth Sense, which I was totally bowled over by. Big disappointment at the end when I realized that the ending was just as weak as the rest of the film. Sorry, but this one was a no-go!!
Gone with the Wind (1939)
What more but stunning?
Growing up in the South with a, needles to say, southern mother I heard of this movie constantly from her when I was growing up. She thought that Clark Gable as Rhett was the absolute best in the world. When I was younger and before I saw the movie I thought, "Yeah, just another old dead guy in a movie." The first time I saw it was when there was a re-release of it in 1976. It seemed like a long time to sit in a theater, but why not?
From the moment the picture started, I sat hypnotized. From the moment that Vivien Leigh shows up on the screen you are taken out of the present and sent back to a much gentler time. You can feel the breeze on your face and smell magnolias. The time seemed to fly by.
The sense of actually being in the lives of the characters is overwhelming. Clark Gable does a depiction of Rhett Butler that is unbelievable. After having read the book and seeing the movie for about the 13th time I can say that I can't think of anyone in Hollywood when this movie was made that could have played Rhett any better. Leslie Howard does a perfect job of displaying what a milquetoast Ashley Wilkes really was; living in his fantasy world of what should be and never really grasping what really is. Olivia de Haviland's Melanie compliments Howard's Ashley wonderfully by making us see that neither of them really can handle the world in an adult manner. Vivien Leigh gives us Scarlett O'Hara in perfect view from the teenager with a romantic view of everything to a powerful woman who never lets anything stop her from getting what she wants.
I loved the depiction of the Southern attitude towards the war: The scenes of the burning of Atlanta were, of course, so real it was great crying material.
I think this movie should be required viewing by all high school history classes! The Classic of the classics!
I give it a 10+.
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
Excellent!
This movie was stunning in its depiction of the monster that we all love to hate. Gary Oldman did an unbelievably spectacular job of making the Count a despicable murderer, a grotesque old man, a sexy seducer and someone extremely pitiable. The settings were marvelous and the period clothing was breathtaking. Wynona Ryder played the lovely Mena superbly and Tom Waits gave a chilling depiction of Renfield that cut to the bone. The movie picks you up and sweeps you away and it is like moving down a river. Before you know it the ride is over and it leaves you wanting more!!
