To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995)
A delight
Just a fun movie all around. The way it handled the characters was really respectful and never treated them like a joke, which is always a relief, and the way they were set in their circumstances and world was clever and well-done. It's a movie worth revisiting now and again, if even just for the brilliant performances alone.
Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)
Still a favorite after all these years
I loved this movie when I was growing up, and that interest waned with the whole. Tom Cruise. Thing.
Went back to rewatch it again recently, and it holds up. Atmospheric, dark and broody and sexy and well-told. The pacing is great, the music is great, it's wonderfully gay. The alterations it made to the book as well I thought were smart, and it's not often that a book-to-movie adaptation does this good of a job about it. Really just a delight to revisit.
Lucifer: Partners 'Til the End (2021)
Insultingly bad writing
"Not with a bang, but with a whimper," although in this case the end came with more of a long, drawn-out, self-congratulatory wet fart noise, as the writers for the show dislocated limbs to pat themselves on the back for the misery porn delivered on a plate. Seriously one of the biggest 'f you's' I've seen a show give to the fans, ever. Hands down. The bar was on the ground and somehow still became a tripping hazard.
The ending episode was repetition after repetition of joyless angst and denial, all marching the characters to an intensely stupid conclusion. The ending didn't make sense. It also wasn't in any way satisfying. There's a lot of people in these reviews trying to convince themselves this ending was great, and that's honestly sad.
There were so many logical inconsistencies and forced/reverse character motivations - it was an absolute MESS of an ending. I say that having dearly loved these characters. I didn't want to hate the show, but I'm also not going to lie to myself that what the writers served up wasn't inedible garbage.
Were we ever meant to root for Lucifer's happiness? Were we ever supposed to hope for Deckerstar to happen? It very much felt like we as fans were being openly mocked for those hopes. There was so much cowardice and malice in the way the writers set up and delivered the very forced conclusion to this show that it's impossible to set aside how deliberate it was. And as more and more interviews of the writers come out, that blatant disregard for the characters is even more apparent.
The ending was lazily written, poorly delivered, and shockingly incompetent. I regret that the minimum review is one star, as it certainly didn't deserve that much.
The Time Capsule (2022)
Awful, and not even in a fun way
What drew me to the film was Brianna Hildebrand, having had conflicting opinions on her from her previous works and looking for a bit of a tie-breaker. What compelled me to write a review, though, was seeing the sharp split in the few reviews offered for the film. It looks like the divide is between people that watched it, and people that are trying to sell it, which is always a hoot.
I'm one of the ones that watched it. Regrettably.
The movie trailer tells you nearly everything you need to know about this story. Slapshod science being used solely to create a scenario where a middle-aged, floundering man has an excuse to get romantically involved with a teenaged girl. It genuinely never got deeper than that, and no matter the romantic music put on top of the scenes, it also never got less creepy than that premise suggests.
There was an element of predictability in the way the story unfolded that was tedious and cringey in turns. Scenes went on way too long. The dialogue felt awkward and forced. The audio balancing was amateurish. Watching the film was something I endured out of curiosity, and seeing other reviews describe this film as a 'comedy'... I think we watched different movies. I can't recall a single time I laughed. It's not framed as a comedy at all.
I'd recommend giving this movie a pass. It had nothing memorable to offer, all set to the tune of an incredibly inappropriate, groomer-y 'romance'. Bleh.
