Up in the Air (2009)
Just Plain Depressing
Up in the Air is yet another Clooney film that has been a disappointment, but not in the way you would expect. This time this Clooney film is one that is worth the watch, but maybe for just one time. This film really does not have anything that would have it stand out at all, other than that it is a decent story line as Anna Kendrick's performance is enjoyable if anything. The story surrounds a man who's life entails him constantly taking flights, traveling to many parts of the country in order to let people know that they have been let go from their respective companies. That is it. A constant reminder of what that job entails and seeing that it can only go but so far.
Home Alone (1990)
Timeless Classic
Home Alone has to be the most popular Christmas film as it truly never ages and is one that is sure to stay in your favorites for many years to come. A quaint story about a family going on a Christmas vacation may not seem like much, but when a frantic mother forgets her son and leaves him behind in their home (alone), the fun begins. An absolute masterpiece is what this film delivers in every aspect, from its beautiful score to its amazing Christmas aesthetic to its story that leaves one appreciative and satisfied, this is a film like no other as it delivers again and again. However, past this first story, the only other Home Alone film that is outstanding would have to be the second installment as the other three are pointless to watch.
Elf (2003)
Unexpectedly Fun
Elf has to be the Christmas classic that everyone falls head over heels in love with as Will Ferrell's performance as Buddy the elf is superb and innocent. From this film's beautiful and mellow score to its humor to its scenery, this is sure to easily become a top favorite when it comes to Christmas films as if this isn't on your list, it definitely will be soon. Though there are random scenes in this film that do not do much for the viewer and the story, there is still a sense that in the end there will be such satisfaction that you'll feel all warm and cozy inside. If anything, you'll want to visit New York during the Christmas season.
Christmas with the Kranks (2004)
Fun-Loving and Just Christmas Enough
Christmas with the Kranks is yet another Christmas classic film that you have to watch annually as the humor and message of the film seem to never get old. This cute and quaint Christmas film is one that has mild and cute humor to it, and delivers a beautiful message towards the end of the movie that may just leave you in tears. This film is one that definitely remains light hearted and fun throughout the holiday season. This certainly is not the strongest film there is, but it is one that is enough to be worth watching over and over again. Don't expect your Christmas classic to be filled to the brim with holiday aesthetics, but instead expect it to have meaning and humor enough to make you fall in love with it again and again.
1899 (2022)
Weirdly Awesome
1899 is a show that could not get more complex if it wanted to, but even so it definitely will being that the finale is a major cliffhanger. This show has so many twists and turns that though one might want to quit and watch something else, it is so intriguing that you want to keep watching just to see what happens next. An unbelievably attractive show that makes one think about our humanity and what we believe, but we seem to have more to come as answers still remain unsolved. This show is one that I can truly appreciate as it is unique as its story line is dramatic, but not anything beyond words and so left field that you want to leave early. This show is a beautiful masterpiece and one to surely not miss as every episode leaves you wanting more.
Falling for Christmas (2022)
Pretty Cute
If you are walking into this film thinking it will be another cheesy Hallmark film, you'd be surprised to learn that it is actually not despite its Hallmark styled poster. Falling for Christmas is a film that is decent enough and though it has a pretty unoriginal story to it, it still is able to make itself worthy of a decent film between the performance of Chord Overstreet and Lindsay Lohan. The ending was something that audiences could have easily have seen coming and predicted what was going to happen, but even so, it was still a cute film and one that though some moments were nonsense, it still fit the film overall. I would definitely watch this film again.
Mr. Harrigan's Phone (2022)
Decent?
This film did not know what it wanted to be let alone a proper genre to place this film into and it truly did show throughout the film. Mr. Harrigan's phone is one that is interestingly enough a decent story, with excellent actors, but yet it does not feel fulfilling at the end and leaves the viewer wondering what exactly happened as questions were never answered. This film went from being a drama to a soap opera to a horror film and then to a thriller and back to drama; the storyline kept jumping back and forth and no one knew what was actually going on. I would say the best part of this film was watching young actors use actual iPhone ONES of all things. Decent enough film, but not worth watching twice.
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (2022)
Lovely, Simply Lovely
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris is a beautiful film that brings back the classic nostalgia of what Paris feels like and brings out what it is to be truly wholesome in a classic tale. This film is about an older woman who had been spending her time cleaning houses and suddenly discovers a dress of which allowed her to dream to actually go to Paris and get a dress of her very own. This wholesome story feels almost like a camera man is walking around and filming people simply being themselves. This film is nothing short of a delight, only leaving the viewer wanting a lot more as we seem to simply fall in love with Mrs. Harris!
The Half of It (2020)
This was a good idea?
Why anyone would think the execution of this film was any good at all speaks volumes. This film has a decent plot and story, and delivery from the actors. The idea of friendship and belonging are very much present in this film and though those themes are a constant reminder of what this story is about, it does boggle the mind a bit as to if something like this could even happen and be realistic at all as it does seem a bit far fetched. The film has its moments like any other film, but does it do enough to stand out? It is the story that you have to as yourself, do we really need another teenage high school drama?
Marriage Story (2019)
Difficult to get Through
This film is quite possibly one of the hardest to get through simply because of the plot and how slow the presentation of the film is. The basis of the story may be one that we have all heard before, but though it comes across and is executed well, something still lacks in the deep end. There is too much of the same repetitive nature in the film as one feels as if they are watching the same scenes over and over as the mood does not seem to change all too well and the story does not stray far off from its course. There is nothing special about this film; there is no reason why anyone should voluntarily watch this film as the only reason it has such raves is because of its two headline actors.
The Guilty (2021)
Nice Thriller
Though this film is essentially focused completely on Jake Gyllenhaal's character, it does as for a lot of suspense and tough moments as the story in itself and its setting are ones that without even having watched anything, audiences know it will be intense and more realistic than other scenarios. This film is by far one that gets angry very fast and does so by keeping cool with the level of intensity throughout the entirety of the film. The story line is one that may seem overdramatized, but is one that is not so far fetched that it cannot be conveyed as a real life situation that may occur. This is a decent film, a good watch to say the least, but is surely one decent thriller.
Jexi (2019)
Horrible
If this film is your choice for movie night, choose another movie to watch. Nothing is more despicable and cringe to watch than this attempt at a comedy. Though the storyline is basic and has some structure to it, there is no point in watching more than 15 minutes of this movie without getting pissed off, irritated and furthermore, downright annoyed. The comedy in this movie is by far whack and thinks it has a deeper meaning to it, when the guilt trip at the end of the film does nothing, but make the viewer get up and walk away, that is if they make it that far. This was and remains a stupid idea for a film and will remain so as the comedy here, would not compare in any means close to how comedy should be properly executed.
Colette (2018)
What just happened?
I cannot fathom what exactly happened in this film, as though the beginning was certainly watch worthy, it quickly went downhill as the two main characters has this deal with each other I suppose? So quickly did this story go downhill, I cannot believe this was based on an actual true story. Colette had a good basis and emphasis on the story of a woman in France who could not write during the time period of the great Beatrix Potter, but alas was still not enough to please audiences. This film fell short of a lot and was indefinitely a one time watch as every scene I found myself yelling, wanting it all to end so as to not have to watch any more. If you are after period drama films of the day, I would highly suggest watching Emma instead as that is a beautiful film that is certainly the very opposite of cringe.
Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
What happened?
So... this happened. While the first and original Hocus Pocus film of 1993 still lives and dwells in the hearts of millions and such a classic and iconic film, this sequel failed to impress. More than anything, this film lacked its sense of comedy and family styled story. What can I say, the characters were weak, character development was weak, and the music was cringe? Until the ending, I did not feel any level of sincerity for the witches at all, though it was a bittersweet ending. I just really wanted something else. The whole film just felt entirely short and more so with the first song that I could barely get through and felt awful having heard that after it was over. Only two scenes felt sincere and heartfelt, and straight up well done, the beginning storyline and the ending, both with the witches. Everything in-between that was odd and with that lack of character development, what was left? Another point, is anyone going to talk about the woods set feeling entirely, entirely fake? I could not get over how fake that moon felt during the scenes that took place in the woods as it felt very high school theater-esque. So much was missing from this film, beginning that it was not even filmed in Salem to the sets to the basic humor levels that were nonexistent. This film could have had fans roaring at their screens, but instead seemed to have most of us walk away with disappointment.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Nothing Short of Epic
Wow, I don't think I have ever been so impressed by a sequel before and there we are. This film is unbelievably nostalgic to the first Top Gun film and truly a head nodder to everything that film was and still is. Top Gun: Maverick became something that everyone needed and truly became something that was nothing short of a dream. I can only imagine kids seeing the film and wanting to become pilots themselves as this film makes you imagine being a pilot and flying. This film makes you dream and go back in time, while at the same time focusing on what can happen in the future and all that pilots have achieved. This was a beautiful sequel that was done with outstanding music and and outstanding cast and storyline. This was the film of the decade that truly does show that you do not need CGI to make a great film, you just need a great story and even greater people to tell it.
Do Revenge (2022)
Not... Terrible
While this film had promise, we certainly did not need another unrealistic rich kid high school drama with outlandish ideas and colors shown on screen. The concept of the film may not be "new", however it did work with this film in its explanation and early execution. Nonetheless, this is another dramatic high school film that focuses too much on male power and sex and hotness of each other as opposed to real life struggles and especially those of teens. This film certainly does make one miss the old school teen movies such as The Breakfast Club or The Goonies, or even Ferris Bueller's Day Off where the idea of the teenager comes to light and though those same concepts may come to light, they are hidden away behind some shelf where no one dares touch those ideas. This film certainly does one thing though; it reminds all of us of what a film can and cannot do, how a film regarding teens can so easily be one thing and then another and how these stories can flip just like that. The drama is overrated and the whole environment is something that is repeated again and again and again. And just when the world is trying to promote and teach upon and focus on feminism and women's power, on women's bodies, a film like this comes around and knocks down those ideas and women become ashamed again and more so, in her teenage years. This film des not do anything for me, except wonder who is responsible for this idea.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Why? Just WHY?
Why does this exist? Seriously, can someone tell me? I cannot condone a single reason why someone genuinely thought this was a good idea at all. Honestly, some superheroes are meant to stay in the comics, on the page, and She-Hulk was absolutely one of them. There was and is nothing about this show that is unique, other than a unique failure that is. This show not only has the cringiest CGI, but the story line is utterly weak. From the very beginning when we see Hulk and the two of them together, we had hoped for some action and deep story line, but no. Immediate disaster and much more screen time with him than I thought possible and I say that because while his introduction was necessary, we do seem to move away from liking him since it is completely his fault that she becomes a hulk to begin with. From then on, what exactly is the story? What exactly is the message?
Pinocchio (2022)
What was the point
What was the director thinking? Pinocchio as a live-action film adaptation is one that no one asked for and as such, no one needed. This film was cringy from the very beginning and honestly was hard to get through. From Jiminy's over narrating to Honest John to everything else, this story was certainly one that did not need to be told again. I do not believe I have ever seen such atrocity when it comes to a film, especially a Disney film, in many years. This was a film that I could not get through in one sitting as it truly felt boring all the way through and not much excitement or originality that is usually spotted in Disney live-action remakes. This was a waste of time, so if you are planning to watch this, turn around and choose something else.
Purple Hearts (2022)
Stunning
This film was nothing short of stunning, though it may not look like it. This is the telling of a new marine and a young woman who get married in order for her to gain benefits and be able to now afford medical supplies for herself. This new couple learn to appreciate one another and eventually truly fall in love with one another. This film shows an idea that may not be the most original, but is certainly there in execution. Throughout the telling of the story, I wanted nothing more than their true happiness and life together to be real, as drama takes hold of them when his past dealer demands money in order to pay off his debt of the past. This film is absolutely beautiful in its telling and certainly does stand out as amazing.
Being the Ricardos (2021)
What was this?
So... this happened. This film tells the story of a little insight of the lives of Lucille Ball and her husband as the most famous television couple for many years and how they transformed the number one show, I Love Lucy. Though Nicole Kidman's portrayal of the iconic Lucille Ball was enough, it may not have been enough to carry this film. It is a moderate story as it shows the behind the scenes of the making of their own television show and the work that goes behind every episode, but audiences wanted more. In some ways, this story almost felt like a documentary as it was more informative and factual than much else.
tick, tick...BOOM! (2021)
What...
Honestly, I have no idea how to react to this film. It was, well, pointless? Though the amazing Andrew Garfield may have done somewhat stunning in this new film, what exactly happened? Does anyone get it? I understand the story and the structure, but too many scenes seemed like filler scenes with so little to say as this was nothing short of tragic. I mean, he dies before Rent opens? I understand this to be the story of the person who wrote the smash Broadway hit Rent, but his life leading up to that breakthrough and his struggles finding the perfect story and voice. This film was something that you just feel weird about afterwards and wonder if that was a waste of time or not. Again and again, the film does something to you that either makes you look at things differently or it makes you believe there is a higher power... or something? I do not know what this film had going for it, but it was certainly something to talk about.
Cheaper by the Dozen (2022)
CHEAPER by the Dozen
Wow. This film was by far, yet another complete waste of time and time that is that I will never get back. Why this was a remake you might wonder, why indeed. This remake was one that did not need to happen and truly angers most of us that love the original film and wished it would have stayed that way, one and only. This film has nothing but copy cat energy throughout it, nothing stands out as imminently unique at all. This remake, is by far insanely annoying as characters are not even memorable a few minutes into the film. Though this is not the worst remake in existence, it is one that no one should waste their time seeing as this is nothing short of pathetic.
Cheaper by the Dozen (2003)
Ridiculously Fun
If you have never seen this film before, what is stopping you? This film is nothing but fun as is the ways of the older Disney classics, and this certainly is one of them. Steve Martin leads the film as his role of Tom Baker and together with his wife, they have TWELVE kids. You heard me correctly. Twelve! But, they only have eleven at home as their oldest is already an expectant working woman and lives her own life. However, the remaining eleven kids surely stir up chaos when it comes to their new home as dad Tom, gets a new promotion for work and has to move the family closer to where he lives. Naturally this causes great tension and frustration with the family as where they had grown up in was the house that they had all known and loved for their whole lives. This story is all about family, so naturally it is a family movie and is one that is pretty likable most of the time.
Ice Age (2002)
Fun Loving
Ice Age is an animation film regarding, well, the ice age period in Earth's history. Ice Age is a story of three unlikely friends who at first are nothing more than different species with different leads in life and ultimately rely on each other as they learn to see past those differences and gain on what they have in common. Ice Age is a beautiful story that takes anyone through a fun adventure of prehistoric proportions as we see a time period that we know so little about, and has now come to life. The mix of drama and comedy as well in this film makes it unique in that it tells truths about the relationship between humans and animals of the time, and how the world literally was shifting and changing as the ice age period was almost over. This is a fun story and one to surely entertain the family.
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022)
Horrid
This film is easily one of the worst Disney films to date. Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers is very difficult to get through, as the live action mixed alongside animation is not pleasing and makes everything confusing, as was the Roger Rabbit style of film, but at least Roger Rabbit had a decent story. From the very beginning, this film shows its weakness as audiences become uncomfortable with the mix and telling of the story as a whole. From the crossover characters that magically make their way into this new universe that are familiar and pleasing to those that are well known and classic, but have had clear hardships in their lives and are now unrecognizable as who we all know and love, such as Peter Pan. It is not worth any of your time at all so I would recommend to seek out another film from Disney.
