The Black Phone (2021)
I was expecting more.
Don't get me wrong. This wasn't a total flop and I don't want to give it a poor rating. Compared to most horror movies I've seen lately this one stands out a bit more. The acting, setting and story were a good set up for something different. But in the end it wasn't. My biggest complaint is that it wasn't very scary. I have seen almost every big ticket horror movie and most of the high rated indie ones, so I am a little desensitized. Aside from a few jump scares there wasn't much "horror" but there was plenty of suspense.
At the end I was left feeling a bit let down. I was hoping there would be some sort of twist or revelation that never came. The origin of the killer, why he did what he did, the significance of the phone, where the mask came from and why it kept changing shapes, etc. It felt like there was more to the story that got cut. Like when he said to the kid "I just want to look at you". Why? What happened in this dude's childhood? Was he punished for being a "naughty boy" too? It's implied but not obvious enough for me to think ok well this explains everything.
It just ended in a predictable and somewhat unsatisfying way. There were some plot holes too. The biggest one that comes to mind was why did he freak out when his mask fell off and his full face was revealed? Didn't he show his full face at the beginning when he abducted the kid? It doesn't make sense but I wish that it did. I wish we had a more well rounded killer than just some guy who murders kids and hides his face (sometimes) with no discernable reason.
Hypochondriac (2022)
I created an account to write this.
This movie isn't a 10. More like a 6.5 in my opinion. But after watching this movie I was sad to see this had such a low score so I wanted to raise it up. This movie was very powerful and heartbreaking at times but it definitely moved me. It's not horror, and I guess that's why some people are not happy with it. It's more of a psychological drama/thriller with a nod to Donnie Darko. It's definitely not a forgettable movie.
