1980.s SCi-Fi , a favorite.
5 November 2022
One of the greats of the cinematic year of 1982.

You gotta love the 80's when a young kid like me, not even into my teens, could easily get into theaters to see such classics as Road Warrior(2 times), Blade Runner(x3), The Thing(x2), First Blood(x2), Sudden Impact(x2) The Shining, this and many others.

For many years I had this on VHS, taped off the TV from probably the only showing (the days when we would scour the TV schedules and wait , remote in and and finger poised to edit out the add breaks). I also taped to cassette some of the soundtrack directly from the TV speaker, dialog and all.

This is short and sweet from the Roger Corman stable, nothing wasted. Interesting watching the end credits as to how many people moved on in the cinema world including James Cameron who had a hand in the design- love the run-down style of the space station. Also some of the themes that recur in the Terminator films, particularly the Moral Governor scene and when Max 404 briefly becomes the Terminator.

A hidden gem, acting is okay and standouts in Don Opper and the great Klaus Kinski.

Recommended.

Oh dear.
18 October 2022
Very disappointing. Started off quite well but then the descent into nothingness.

I waited and then watched the entire season over a couple of days, If I had watched week by week I would never have made it through.

It is all very po-faced, not a hint of humour to lighten proceedings, no Peter Jackson flourishes to get a chuckle. Only the Dwarves lift this slightly.

Production values and performances are generally ok but the Harfoot come across with a large wiff of Ewok. Every time we see them the music swells and tells us these are so 'cute' and we must 'love' them and their Oirish accents. But they are just twee and irritating.

A huge miss.

Great Lost Spaghetti.
10 October 2022
This is a great Spaghetti Western. Seemingly lost, as I can find no mentions of it in any lists/favourites of the genre and was difficult getting a viewable copy with English subtitles.

Released in 1971 when the serious Spaghetti cycle was on the wane and spoof comedies led by Terence Hill and Bud Spencer were at the fore.

This is definitely in the Fistful of Dollars style, some people might feel to much, but it is well written and directed with a good cast of actors. Fabio Testi does good Clint Eastwood and Charo Lopez is good as the rather abused Jessica.

Altogether a great find, one of the better Spaghetti's, as I have now seen 76 of them this is in the top echelon.

Seek it out.

30 years of The Bat, The Cat, The Penguin fills the Void
29 September 2022
2022 is the 30th Anniversary of this gorgeous piece of art and what a Piece it is.

This was a re-watch after a good few years absence and my first view on Blu-ray which really made the visuals and sound pop. Batman Returns and The Dark Knight are the two standout Batman movies, stone classics.

After the slight disappointment whenever I watch Batman 89 , a good movie with great acting by Keaton and Nicholson's Joker that is spoiled by the Vicki Vale character who seems to drop in from something else entirely. This time all tho notes are hit, Keaton, Walken and DeVito give magnificent performances.

...And then there is Michelle Pfeiffer, Catwomen, entirely gorgeous in both guises. Something that can never be topped. A great shame that she was never to return to the character. Burton also. Victims of yet another Warner Brothers course correction in their attempt to sell Happy Meals and Be-nippled Batsuits.

This time I noticed that the whole opening scene and credits of the Penguin's journey to the sewers is a take on Superman's journey from Krypton to Earth. Really, it is.

Great also to see the Penguin in the cemetery bump the headstone just like an Ed Wood Movie which happened to be Tim Burton's next movie.

Praise must also go to Danny Elfman's greatest score and the production design which though 'stagy' is glorious and gives a claustrophobia to the cold Christmas setting.

A great ,colorful delight, my favourite Batman.

With a big yellow ducky...

Interesting Roger Moore I had never seen.
10 September 2022
Very odd Roger Moore film made during his James Bond stint somewhere between The Man With the Golden Gun and The Spy Who Loved Me I would guess. Very slow in parts yet still feels as if great chunks of it are missing. A look at some of the poster art suggest missing scenes or possibly a later mash up poster to cash in on some Bond sexiness.

Interesting in parts and even some some similarity to future bond films. Roger must have had some deja vu when filming in Karnak after this bit in the columned Roman ruins. Some similarities also with the tanker chase to the later Licence to Kill.

Fairly good double act with Keach , Moore this time playing the straight man.

Many Wars Ago (1970)

A lost classic.
6 September 2022
This is really a lost masterpiece of an anti-war film. The total futility of the loss of life in wasted back and forth engagements to no advantage , just an horrendous mounting cost of carnage. Martinet officers strut their stuff, more interested in shooting their own men than any real advance. What was it in air those years ago that made men like this keep sending others into the meat grinders.

This is a very good war film that I can find on almost no list of the best war films. Gone and forgotten... because it was made in Italy??? I don't know.

More people should see it, up there with Kubrick's Paths of Glory.

Westworld (2016–2022)

Almost two different shows.
2 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a full 10/10 for the first 2 seasons alone. A dip in the third and a comeback in the 4th though I still much prefer the time in the original Park, the actual WESTworld.

Having been a fan of the original Michael Crichton 1973 film I was really intrigued and looking forward to this series and it did not disappoint. It is the first and still one of the only shows that I have gone back to and re-watched seasons in their entirety. Not Season 3 though. For me the contrast to the 'modern' world was too jarring.

Now that season 4 is complete I shall return to 3 and 4 to watch as a whole.

I did like the return of the Man In Black towards the end as the almost Yul Brynner figure. The love of Dolores and Teddy and also Caled and his daughter was heartbreaking for me.

Never bettered.
2 September 2022
All time classic of vehicular mayhem, often imitated and possibly equaled by Fury Road but never bettered. (I also like Beyond Thunderdome but it's not really the same thing is it.)

Great to see The Road Warrior on Bluray ,the budget is all up there with the great practical effects, good, proper stunt work. I love Brian May's pulse pounding score, works so well with the visuals. Mel Gibson and the rest of the cast are great with Standouts the Feral Kid , Gyro Captain and Dog.

One of my all time favorites, watched it so many times, I would say it's the best Spaghetti Western of the 1980's (Kangaroo Western??) Never gets old.

A slog.
2 September 2022
This has turned into a bit of a slog. I understand changes to an original work for the sake of squeezing it into a series but this has really drifted away. Also the low budget nature has left it very TALKY in order to fill out screen time and it has lost the zip and energy of the original comic.

In general the acting is good, standouts for me are Cassidy and Starr. Jessie and Tulip are disappointing and one of my favorite characters, Jody, being a dead loss.

Too many deviations and digressions, I will slowly finish season three and four to see how it completes. Long live the graphic collections.

Good One.

An interesting poliziotteschi made by and with a lot of the people from one of my all time favorites 'The Violent Professionals' 1973.

Sometimes the re-use of footage and score can lead to Deja vu.

Top notch thriller. Brutal
22 August 2022
This is a difficult watch, no lame brain entertainment, no shoot 'em up.

Was this before it's time or just showing how the cycle continues? 48 years after it's release and nothing much has changed.

Dull.
19 August 2022
This one is Dull. Drawn out.

All the actors seem to be sleepwalking and the characters wander around as if in slow motion.

The main character is so unsympathetic and idiotic I started to wish she'd been bumped off in the first reel to save me from seeing the stupidity with the pipe organ and the bats.

Oh man, my eyes, my eyes.

Brilliant.

This is great. Sad, strange, disturbing yet uplifting.

Favourite of the year so far. So mysterious. John Turtutto and Christopher Walken were so endearing.

Graphics brought to life.
14 August 2022
As a long time reader of the graphics (I have the original comics) I have been pleasantly surprised by the faithfulness of this series and seeing favorite characters brought to life has been a delight (here's looking at you Martin Ten-bones).

This has taken most of 'Preludes and Nocturnes ' and 'The Dolls House' and put it on screen to great effect.

My one quibble is that Gwendoline Christie's Lucifer seems to lack menace,(so far).

See you in 'Season of the Mists'
