Kiss of the Dragon (2001)
Oh my goodness!
Now not many martial arts films get 10/10 but this was something else. Only the second of his films I've seen but it's way better than the other (I forget what that one was). For this kind of film I fail to see what else they could have done to make it any better. Villains were developed beautifully so by the time they saw thier demise you'd really learned to hate them. Pretty typical in that aspect but everything was original. Superb choreogarphy (or however you spell it) and I particularly like the acupuncture.....you'll see!!
For what it is, I have seen no better film. This thriller is packed with action and excitement and will have you amazed regularly.
Oh yeah, and I'm going to have to watch it again because I didn't realise that Bert Kwouk was the old guy.....CATO!!! :-)
They (2002)
Cheap thrills.
Kids get nightmares and some still do when they grow up. This was obvious at the start and that is about all the story amounts too except to ask the question "are there really monsters out to get you?" The strongest aspect of this film was it's ability to make you jump....didn't work so much for me but my wife was jumping and grabbing hold everytime there was a sudden surge of dramatic music or a sudden movement or scream. Go and see it if you like a fright but don't expect too much other excitement.
Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) (2000)
Wonderfully produced series all round
Stories are good, effects are great, I love the slightly over saturated colours (or is that just my old TV?) and great soundtrack all make this series feel totally unique. With Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer in the main roles you'd expect lots of humour and to the credit of everyone involved this isn't so evident as you might expect. There is humour but it's much lower key as to what you'd normally expect from these two. I've just got the DVD and will be watching it alot.
Mr. Deeds (2002)
Entertaining
Unlike many films in this genre, the main character is not embarrasing but is an almost believable, normal guy. There are many funny moments and the film has a nice message but is rather spoilt buy the soppy ending which isn't surprising as this seems to be the standard format for ending 95% of films these days. Well worth watching, however, and should cheer up the foulest of moods on the wettest of days.
Living with the Dead (2002)
Superb.
This film is kind of like "Sixth Sense" (he sees dead people) only, in my opinion, a fair amount better. The guy is on one hand trying to help a detective solve a series of murders but also cope with his new found "talent" along with other personal troubles. Thoroughly watchable, I found myself eager for the adverts to end and get back to the excitement. It ends well and will surprise you.
Don't Say a Word (2001)
Pretty standard thriller
This film was as watchable and exciting as the next thriller. Fairly predictable plot: Clever criminals get someone into a tricky situation where they're seemingly helpless to do anything other than what the criminal wants. The film builds up your animosity towards the criminals therefore making it that much more satisfying when they come to a spectacular demise at the end. I wonder if casting an Englishman as the lead criminal makes a difference here....my wife says they're better criminals in movies because they are more "savvy"! Oh by the way, I'm an Englishman myself and I'm neither criminal nor "savvy"!
The MatchMaker (1997)
Weak
This film never really got going...like one of those slow starters. It was weak all the way through and only really good enough to keep me watching it. I thought it would at least be somewhat funny with Denis Leary in it but I only smirked briefly 3 or 4 times.
Before Sunrise (1995)
The unique thing about this film that I noticed right away
was how it really seemed natural. It didn't seem like two people were speaking well rehearsed lines, more like it was real conversations so the whole thing came across very naturally and I liked that. It could almost have been a cameraman following two ordinary people except that the storyline wouldn't have been likely in real life. I liked this film, it went smoothly and was generally happy.
